“Remember that a kite rises against, not with the wind”We need to create the conditions in cities and cultures where people can think, plan and act with imagination. The capacity to imagine is being squashed by the hierarchy of risk culture, the doom and gloom corporate system that places an ability to mitigate loss above the blue sky creative capacity. Deadpool: Red Envelope Files For Bankruptcy - SendMeRSS
Deadpool: Red Envelope Files For BankruptcyI can’t say we didn’t see this coming. Quirky online gift catalog site Red Envelope filed for bankruptcy on April 17, according to an SEC filing. Its assets will be purchased by Creative Catalogs in exchange for $5.7 million and the assumption of debt. Red Envelope is also getting a $4.5 million debtor-in-possession line of credit from Creative Catalogs and Granite Creek FlexCap. Two weeks ago, Wells Fargo terminated Red Envelope’s last credit lifeline, and it started to lay off employees. This could be an early sign that other e-tailing sites may be hit hard by the economic slowdown. Or it could just mean that Red Envelope was poorly managed. Either way, Red Envelope will not emerge from the deadpool. Crunch Network:

      Pushing the Envelope
New Yorkers enjoy a reputation for not being the friendliest or the most helpful people, but my experience while recently training for the car-pushing record was just the opposite. In fact, I was amazed at how kind my fellow New Yorkers could be! The record for car-pushing by an individual is 12 miles. The car has to weigh a minimum of 1609 pounds. The engine cannot be running and a person must sit in the driver’s seat to steer. I was practicing with a friend’s Ford Festiva (which weighs about 1850 pounds) around a ½ mile loop along streets of Howard Beach, Queens. Guinness requires you to push the car on a loop to eliminate any possibility (and advantages) of a downhill course. On a loop, whatever respite you get from the downhills, you eventually pay for on the corresponding uphills

10 High-Tech Car Features that are Pushing the Envelope
Just a few years ago, a car that could show you its location on a digital map, take control if you begin to skid, or automatically maintain a set distance from a vehicle in front might have seemed like a glimpse from some far-flung future highway. But these functions are becoming increasingly commonplace in today's vehicles. What's next? How about cars that can automatically brake to a stop in traffic without the driver ever touching the brake pedal? Or ones that can parallel park themselves at the touch of a button? Or vehicles that brake for a pedestrian, even if you're looking the other way? Here, we look at 10 of the latest auto technologies that are either already on the road or coming soon. As with most leading-edge features, the majority of these are now available only in higher-priced luxury models, and even then are often expensive options. But, as we've seen with antilock brakes, electronic stability control, and navigation systems, we can expect many to

This pair is no different and reading about the slow unraveling of their love and the chance that it might somehow be sewn back together is both painful and insightful.Patricia Gaffney's fluid writing captures all the details that make conversation and experiences between people memorable.Below, Dash has stormed out of the office of Dr. Fogleman, a therapist they have seen for the first time. Like many couples who wait too long to seek help, all the damage has already been done, and hoping a third party might be able to undo it is an unlikely dream to come true. Besides, Andrew has said in the session that he is doing fine since the separation. An excerpt:I h

Upgrading My Living Room Entertainment, Part 2: Extended Warranty by Flexo @ Consumerism Commentary. Flexo wonders if he should buy extended warranty (at $63 per year for 3 years) on his newly acquired 42″ $1300 LCD HDTV. Personally, I don’t even think about extended warranties when it comes to electronics - if there is some problem, it’s usually apparent within the first few months and conversely, if there are no problems within the first few months, then it is very less likely that there will be problems in future (according to my perception). This is especially true for stationary (non-portable) items like televisions, desktop computers, or home theater systems - there is hardly anything that can cause malfunctioning at a later stage. Also, most of

The Helix is a planetary nebula, the glowing gaseous envelope expelled by a dying, sun-like star. The Helix resembles a simple doughnut as seen from Earth. But looks can be deceiving. New evidence suggests that the Helix consists of two gaseous disks nearly perpendicular to each other. One possible scenario for the Helix's complex structure is that the dying star has a companion star. One disk may be p

A Favorite Pastime - “Pushing That Envelope”
There is nothing like getting out, experimenting, playing, ….. and pushing that envelope! This shot is of some type of plant that is hanging in and over the edge of a pond, right above the water. I learned something that day about blown, highlighted areas, … and how I possibly can use them a bit more to my advantage, etc. It did not take long at all to accumulate over 1200 images, some of which I sent off to two of the art consultants. A few days later, they convinced me that I need to shoot a lot more of these types of images. “Highlights be damned” by so many individuals. I’ll make them work for me! With this piece, … again, … it is a matter of taste. I did discover that quite a few like them! © 2007 - Michael Brown * Copying/downloading of images is prohibited. The envelope lay on his table, with the other unopened correspondence. The corner that stuck out from between a couple of boring conventional brown ones was a delicate shade of pink. Curiosity made him pin the edge down with forefinger and slide it away from its less inviting companions. The address and his name were printed off a computer so he looked for a post-mark in the hope of getting some clue to the sender’s identity. It had been mailed from Kandivili, a fact that brought an immediate feature-ageing frown to his face. Jerry was quite certain that he didn’t know anyone from that suburb, Probably just some junk mail… He stared at it even though its sheer appearance was incapable of telling him anything further. His name stared back. Jerry Machado. Not Mister Jerry Machado - just Jerry Machado. Familiarity? Or the so called ‘personal touch’? Either someone he knew had moved to Kandivili or this person had already earned a couple of negative points for omitting the res

I received a Christmas Card in this envelope toda...
I received a Christmas Card in this envelope today. I didn't even look at it at first. I just opened it and took the card out. It was only when I was collecting the stamps off the envelopes (for charity recycling) that it struck me as odd. The card had come from a Scottish couple living in North London - so why was there an Eisteddfod stamp on it? Then I thought, 'That`s a funny value - 81/2p'. Still it hadn't clicked that half-pennies were abolished a long time ago. And then I noticed that the stamp was celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Eisteddfod in 1976. This stamp has been languishing in a drawer somewhere for 30 years. I wonder what year the Lifeboat one was issued.I see the post office carefully avoided franking the stamp with a a 2006 date - or is that just coincidence because the card is more or less square and went through their automated system at the wrong orientation.(c) Hal Westhead 2005

Saturn is planning on launching a new online purchasing scheme which will allow even more of the buying process to happen online. The plan is aimed at moving functions like checking dealer inventories, applying for credit and scheduling a test drive to a unified Saturn online platform. Down the road, the website could also be used to handle the evaluation of customers' trade-in vehicles and to negotiate price using online chat and e-mail. Although this last goal is particularly strange given Saturn's "No Haggle" pricing, nothing about this initiative makes much sense, given that the point of huge investments in Saturn's standalone dealership network was not to keep people at their computers. Of course, this program is not being pitched as "the end of the Sa

I found something 45 inches wide that I like, but the back of the pattern envelope says "55 ins/140 cm" at the top of the size chart, and then calls for about 1 1/8 yards for my size without nap. Am I being really dumb for not realizing that the "55 ins" is the appropriate width?
