      an entrepreneur journey
Nowadays, it is easy to find a franchise opportunity if you are all set to become your own boss. From selling donuts to sandwiches, pretzels to ice-cream, starting a franchise means you can ride on an existing brand name and build your business. DH used to own a franchise but after five years of toil and struggles, he decided to call it a day. The high overheads including rental cost and expensive franchise fees had made it very hard to break even and sustain the business. Though it was a challenging journey, the lessons learned had been valuable for him. At least, he had become wiser and less idealistic after this experience.

MYTH: I'll be the boss. REALITY:In the most important ways, you are. However, every client is your "boss". What I like is that clients judge results and I enjoy autonomy of method. Tamkin told me that the Club’s London meeting was that evening, and told me that the keynote speaker was Billy Schwer. Billy won the IBO light-welterweight belt in 2001. That much I knew. What I’d not really appreciated until last night was that Billy is an entrepreneur as well as a sportsman, and that the discipline, determination and desire required to get to the number one in the world in a sport are very similar to the attributes requrired for growing a business. Entrepreneur Spotlight - The Tiger Taco
Entrepreneurs and small business owners are the backbone of our country’s economy. Today I have an interview with entrepreneur and small business owner, Chris Miller, who with his business partner George Pauli, own and operate Tiger Taco. First of all, What the heck is a Tiger Taco!?!?! Watch this video below, and you will soon find out! But don’t forget to read the rest of this interview and find out how you can win some free Tiger Tacos! Ahhh. So that’s a Tiger Taco! It looks very useful - especially for someone who works around boxes everyday or is planning on moving soon. In fact, the Tiger Taco is so straightforward, most people who see it probably ask themselves, “Why didn’t I think of that!” Background for this interview - I met Chris after he left a comment on this blog, and we exchanged a few e-mails. I learned about Tiger Tacos through Chris and thought an interview would tie in perfectly with a book about entrepreneurship that I had

Easier to read the Small Business Entrepreneur blog
I thought I should make a little present to my faithful readers and took a big step forward to improve my blog. Following Tyler Cruz’s advices, I’ve managed to change the layout of the blog to something that I find much more easy to read. It was quite a lot of work to migrate the old b2evolution blog to Wordpress but should make your reading a more pleasant experience. And talking about reading, I know I don’t write as often as I should (although I have plenty of writing ideas each day) so, I’ve also implemented Feedburner. Even if I might space out from time to time, you can now register to feedburner by RSS or email in the top right column, and get my writings whenever they happen! Well, hope to see you come back here more often now!

Entrepreneur Effectiveness alert - The curse & bliss of emails; mundane but important
This topic may not be sexy or intellectually challenging, BUT, I think it is important. As emails go, I think we are confusing effectiveness and speed.I get in excess of 250 emails a day. So often important issues may be ignored due to volume and unimportant matters may take a lot of time. And I am not the only one inundated with so much volume. The problem is that simple issues that can be resolved in minutes with a quick personal conversation actually take multiple emails. Important issues that require real discussion is boiled down to snippets of responses – the result is that decisions are most likely not as comprehensive and often based on either partial information or influenced by the desire to quickly get to a yes / no answer. We achieve speed of exchange but in a lot of situations lose effectives. I can’t count the number of occasions when efforts are duplicated because some one acted on partial information exchanges in emails and had to re-do things. Now, add the complicat

Following my Million Dollar Entrepreneur challenge I've got 2 answers so far: Shawn Hessinger from bootstrapme.com asnwered the question here with the following: Leave my current full-time job Bring in enough-about $40,000 a year by my rough calculations-to support my family while building my business venture. The challenge goes further to Tom Pick at WebMarketCentral Blog. Jared Reitzin from Entrepreneur success blog also answered the challenge with the following statements: In order for me to feel good about doing well in business, I need to accomplish a lot more than just increasing my wealth. For me, true success would be accomplished by making a large social impact that changes the way people do things. The idea that your first million is the most difficult is true, but this is because a.) it takes a while to get to a million and b.) you are learning everything at the same time and trying to have the persistence to not give up when you make bad decisions and things

Entrepreneur blogger Cristian Dorobantescu from energybyte.com recently asked me to answer these questions: • What is the minimum amount it would take to make you feel OK about your entrepreneurship? • What is the most difficult challenge that you face in reaching it? This comes after getting a consensus from a number of entrepreneurs that: • Having a million dollars in the bank is the minimum amount to feel ok about your entrepreneurship. • The most difficult challenge is to make the first million. In order for me to feel good about doing well in business, I need to accomplish a lot more than just increasing my wealth. For me, true success would be accomplished by making a large social impact that changes the way people do things. Much like what Bill Gates has done for businesses over the personal computer, I want build a global brand that will make people more successful at whatever they do. The byproduct of this success would be money, and money helps you buy a Ferrari so d

Entrepreneur Issue! - Why do many startups fail?
I got the following question from an entrepreneur and I thought I share it with everyone.“Why do many startups actually fail? In my observation, i have felt that there are many a startups which have a brilliant idea, a genuine team to execute that and also a good support for the product they intend to build, but still the companies fail to break even. I would love to hear from you your views on why startups fail? cheers, Vaibhav”There may be a thousand different reasons, but here is an attempt at simplifying a clearly completed question. Here is a stab at a few common reasons:1- Chemistry: often entrepreneurial teams fail to have the winning chemistry together ; it is a combination of reaching for perfection and greatness and ability to work together to compromise their way to success.2- Too much Brilliance: a lot of companies fail because the market is not ready for the innovation yet and the entrepreneurs focus on their vision as opposed to what the customer wants or needs – th

Blogging advices from Internet Entrepreneur Tyler Cruz
After reviewing Tyler Cruz blog some time ago, I've got an un-expected reply from Tyler with some very nice advices on how I could improve Small Business Entrepreneur blog. I will take them one by one, and add my point of view on them: 1. Read my You’re Not a Rock Star post. After reading the first 2 lines I was sure Tyler tries to tell me how "inexperienced" I am, but getting passed the initial frustration, I discovered the article is very good on saying "ads on blogs are annoying", especially if you are a beginner. I have to agree that it makes no sense put annoyance on the blog if you are to make 0.14 a day. I took Google Adsense out - but please, please let me play around with other advertising techniques to see how they go. Consider getting a new blog theme or else improve on your current one with some custom graphics and personality.. That's right on target. I completely suck at designs... Get back to posting, preferably once a day (it seems the blog was abando

      Entrepreneur’s Software Arsenal
I’ve put together a list of software that help me be productive. I wish there was one place you could go to download all of this for one price. Google is kind of leading the way with its Pack, but it still doesn’t cover half of the tools an entrepreneur needs. 1. Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro: Creating, editing, and managing .PDF files is a must for any businessman. This is not just the best program, it’s the only program. Get it! 2. AIM Pro: Most everyone I know uses AIM, so why not get the best AIM program? AIM Pro has business–grade security which is very important for me. It also integrates with Outlook so you can get all instant messages and calendar events, and can send email, in one convenient place. (more…)

Cuyahoga County Economic News: A Medina Valpak Entrepreneur
Back when I was living in Maryland and working three different part time jobs at a time, one was for a coupon book similar to Val Pak. I enjoyed it because I was able to focus on local businesses and meet some darn good entrepreneurs. We had stiff competition from Val Pak. I saw this article on CrainsCleveland.com about ValPak and thought about why a local Medina gentleman has decided to buy a Val Pak franchise. He said his prior company had good client response from ValPak and they were a long standing company - two reasons why he 'bought in.' Reminds me of the Norelco commercials (I think it was Norelco!) where the guy would say I liked the product so much I bought the company. I'm wondering what our Franchise King Joel would say about this? I have to admit it's been almost two decades since I was in the coupon business -it was interesting to get an update on how it's working. According to the Crains article written by Marilyn Miller, Valpak is the sixth largest media compa
