This is a double post from another blog I am slowly developing. It's interesting so I thought I'd post it here, too. On Tuesday, February 26, I noticed an article in the NYT Science Times section, The Encyclopedia of Life, No Bookshelf Required. You can visit The Encyclopedia of Life, register as a user, take a video tour of the beginnings of this global effort to create a comprehensive online resource of, basically, all life on earth. The site was launched last Friday by a team of international scientists who expect the project to take about ten years to fully complete. I wonder what the world will seem like in ten years. Well, that's a topic for another day.
Encyclopedia of Life is officially launched. It is an fantastic project to organize and make available via internet all information about life present on Earth. In the first 24 hours (minus the approx. 3-4 hours we were completely down) there were: 18.5M hits, 13.3M page views, and 940GB of data transferred. EOL launched the information of first 30,000 species (pages) and 25 species with full profile. The EOL dynamically synthesizes biodiversity knowledge about all known species, including their taxonomy, geographic distribution, collections, genetics, evolutionary history, morphology, behavior, ecological relationships, an

Later yesterday Google announced that it will soon be launching a new service/tool for worldwide users called Google Knol. Basically the key concept is to create a free open-source encyclopedia (Just like Wikipedia) where people can come and write about any topic. Google wants a tool that is somewhat a cross of Wikipedia and Social Networks.
Knol, which basically stands for a unit of knowledge, is still in development and this is just the first phase of testing. For now only selected group of beta testers can use this service but it will soon be available to the worldwide users for free.
Google will provide easy-to-use tools for writing, editing, and so on, and it will provide free hosting of the content. Authors can write about any topic they want to and each topic shall be called a Knol.

It is written in an informal style intended to make it accessible to a broad spectrum of readers with a wide range of mathematical backgrounds and interests. Although mathematics is a fascinating subject, it all too frequently is clothed in specialized jargon and dry formal exposition that make many interesting and useful mathematical results inaccessible to laypeople. This problem is often further compounded by the difficulty in locating concrete and easily unders+ood examples. To give perspective to a subject, I find it helpful to learn why it is usefu

This curious electronic gadget – which reminds us of Davros from the Doctor Who TV series – has been developed as an educational gadget for children though we suspect that it could also serve as an ideal last minute party guest to take up a vacant chair at the dinner table (who would then serve to totally dominate the conversation).
The device, known as Brian the Brain, comes complete with the entire Encyclopedia Britannica stored in its memory as well as a dictionary and a complete world history time line and utilises voice recognition technology to interact with children who will no doubt want to pick Brain’s expansive electronic Brain in their thirst for facts, figures and someone to help with their homework who actually knows what they’re talking about for a change.
Not only that, but Brian the Brain can also interact on a more personal level to the point where it will even act to engage your children with small talk – such as enquiring as to their likes and dislikes and

Author: Thomas BenjaminPaperback: 1315 pagesPublisher: MacMillan Reference Books (October 2006)Language: EnglishISBN: 0028658434(R)The period from the Renaissance onward has seen several nations and their citizens explore areas beyond their own borders in attempts to discover and colonize new territory, thereby expanding their sphere of influence for economic reasons or, for some, to escape persecution in their own land. Whatever the reason, colonialism still has its effects on the modern world, whether it led to the birth of a new nation (as in the case of the U.S.) or helps to explain simmering tensions that remain in Africa and India. Editor Benjamin is a professor of Latin American history at Central Michigan University; according to his preface, this set "provides the most comprehensive, accessible, and international reference work about the entirety of Western Colonialism from the Portuguese voyages of Prince Henry the Navigator in the fifteenth century to the making of featu

It also summarizes the key points regarding oft-challenged Christian doctrines and beliefs ("Adam, Historicity of," "Virgin Birth of Christ"). Each article is cleanly written and clearly organized. Indeed, Geisler's greatest talent is for logical thinking. Whether he is consider

A medical advisory board reviewed each article for accuracy before its final inclusion in the set. All entries follow an information template. Entries covering cancer types, for example, are presented via 12 subtopics that range from a definition to substantive disease basics and additional resources for reading and research, while entries on cancer drugs entail seven subtopics, including definition, dosages, and side effects. Bold-faced words, cross references, and lists of key terms also guide the user. Unfortunately, the alphabetical arrangement, while simple to follow, does not a
