A fine evening's entertaiment yesterday. I shall have to write about the Tiger Tiger part separately though. We decided to see the recent adaptation of 'Brief Encounter' which is running in the Cinema in the Haymarket, which is being used as a theatre for this show.Its one of those immersive events. You walk into the foyer of a 1930's cinema, with uniformed usherettes and tea and cucumbers being served amongst the popcorn. The whole production is a delight, the actors move around in the audience, there's black and white film inserts shown, a superb ensemble band and a kind of relaxed excellence about the whole production. While kayaking in the calm Pacific waters of Hawaii waiting for passing sea turtles, this couple got what they ask for when a humpback whale appear in front of them instead.These extraordinary images show one couple calmly watching one of these giants of the sea as it raises its fin. But when it suddenly slaps it down - sending a wall of spray towards them - they realise how vulnerable they are and think better of their proximity. Digging in their paddles, they turn away. Even though I had pretty clear understanding on what a leap year is, and how to determine whether a particular year should be or should not be a leap year, still it is very interesting for my ever-curious mind to study a little more on this subject.
Today's calendar system is Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. It was based on the Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. The Julian calendar had been used for 1,627 years, before it was found that the Julian calendar needed an adjustment of 10 days. So, in Julian calendar, after October 4, 1582, the next date was October 15,1582. And then it became the Gregorian calendar.
