When Women Cry at Work - A Show of Human Emotion or a Sign of Weakness?
Author: Linda LowenIt's a "thou shalt not" rule carved in stone that every woman carries in her heart: You can't cry at work if you expect to be taken seriously and advance your career. In the game of life, the act of shedding tears is akin to drawing the 'Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200' card in Monopoly. This belief has been so thoroughly drummed into us that we won't even risk crying in the

      I Second That Emotion
Let me preface this post by saying that I am married to a truly great guy. Over the 14+ years that we've been married, he's learned that occasionally, I cry for absolutely no reason, and that when I share my deepest feelings with him, I might just need a listening ear, not a solution. He's gone from not knowing what in the world to do when my tears start (which is, to be honest, a rare

      Adding emotion to atheism
Paul Harrison, environmentalist and founder of the World Pantheist Movement, explains the basics of a belief system considered by some to be "sexed-up atheism." In The God Delusion Richard Dawkins calls Pantheism “sexed-up atheism.” This is a fair description. Pantheism, in essence, is reverence for Nature and the wider Universe—the Pantheist “God” is everything that exists. In fact the

when i say primal emotions i mean the emotions that we have that are just our animalistic nature. Basic emotions, things that make us human, our primal urges, and emotions. I can think of 4 basic ones off the top of my head, happy,

Emotion Makes Nose a Sharper Smeller
Know how a whiff of certain odors can take you back in time, either to a great memory or bad one? It turns out emotion plays an even bigger role with the nose, and that your sense of smell actually can sharpen when something bad happens.Northwestern University researchers proved the surprising connection by giving volunteers electric shocks while they sniffed novel odors. The discovery, reported in Friday's edition of the journal Science, helps explain how our senses can steer us clear of danger. More intriguing, it could shed light on disorders such as post-traumatic stress syndrome."This is an incredibly unique study," said Dr. David Zald, a Vanderbilt University neuroscientist who studies how the brain handles sensory and emotional learning. Teenage brain changes impact cognition, emotion and behavior
Many parents are convinced that the brains of their teenage offspring are different than those of children and adults. New data confirms that this is the case. An article by Jay N. Giedd, MD, of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), published in the Journal of Adolescent Health describes how brain changes in the adolescent brain impact cognition, emotion and behavior. Dr Giedd reviews the results from the NIMH Longitudinal Brain Imaging Project. This study and others indicate that gray matter increases in volume until approximately the early teens and then decreases until old age. Pinning down these differences in a rigorous way had been elusive until MRI was developed, offering the capacity to provide extremely accurate quantifications of brain anatomy and physiology without the

Of course, I've probably jinxed myself now, and will endure a long string of ear infections, cuts and strange rashes as a punishment for bragging about that. But even the well-child visits are stressful for me. Cordy's visits always start with a full-blown meltdown because she is terrified of the doctor's office. Thankfully, those are only once a year now. For Mira, however, my stress results from the mental preparation of what will happen with each visit.I took Mira to the pediatrician for her nine month check-up the other day. The first part of the exam went relatively well: 20

Synaesthesia is the name of a rare clinical anomaly where people experience unusual and very real sensations, such as the taste of shapes, or the colour of sound.'The Emotion Organ is a synaesthetic simulacrum machine where players can explore the sensational interplay of feeling, seeing, hearing, smelling and motion. It is also a time machine - a re-engineered pump organ from 1895 that combines both old and emerging technology and builds upon a trajectory of several centuries-worth of ideas about synaesthetic phenomena.Without electricity it can be played as a conventional musical instrument, but when plugged in the organ produces varying combinations and intensities of sound, light, colour, scent, vibration and movement. When played it stimulates a highly subjective, cause-and-effect sen

Emotion Defines Morality; Culture Sets Priorities
“Man will become better when you show him what he is like.” - Anton Chekhov Our modern culture highly values our rationality. Genius, seemingly defined as those with great accomplishment, is highly celebrated by our culture, if not by income, at least by notoriety. Our emotionality, on the other hand, seems to get attributed with causing many of the problems our culture finds criminal. Rage is said to have led to many murders, domestic abuse, child abuse and greed to theft and fraud for a couple of examples. Combining genius and emotional disturbance however seems to characterize those that gain infamy in the history books. Hitler and Stalin come to mind. We are part rational, part emotional. From my clinical experience, we are unable to separate the two effectively. In other words,

The Function of Contradictions Between Emotion and Thought
A couple months back The Frontal Cortex had an interesting article about the seemingly contradictory nature of humans. The author is a neuroscientist and so has more than an average faith in the scientific method. 1. Jeff Lewis, the incredibly entertaining lunatic at the center of Flipping Out, the real-estate reality television show on Bravo, fires his psychic because she wasn't doing a good job of predicting the future. So what does he do? He goes and hires a different psychic. I'm fascinated by this thought process. On the one hand, Jeff's empirical enough to realize that his psychic sucked. But he never even flirts with the possibility that all psychics suck. I know that we all have our rational blind spots, but rarely are they so elegantly captured on television. 2. I've recently been spending some time, perhaps too much time, with a few professional poker players. In general, these guys are mathematical freaks, able to crunch complicated probabilities in a split second. Th

Reasoned discussion or argument, dialogue or emotion?
In Massachusetts, some homosexual activists have a truly distorted idea of what constitutes authentic dialogue: http://www.massresistance.org/docs/info/know_thy_neighbor.html"A discussion is an orderly confrontation based on a mutual willingness to learn from one another. It involves the presentation of evidence by each party and then a good-faith attempt of the participants in the discussion to come to agreement. Discussion presupposes some degree of rational disagreement between us or at least a lack of consensus. If I agreed with you already, we would have nothing to discuss. In a discussion, I do not primarily want to disagree: I want to know the truth. If I do not think that what you say is true, then I disagree, stating my reasons as clearly as possible and without animosity. The same is true for you: you present me with your reasons. By sharing our ideas freely, we hope to arrive at a deeper truth. In a discussion, disagreement is for the sake of agreement.....An argument (emoti

      Emotion And The "Apple-holics"
So, I noticed something very odd the other day. Folks take their "apple-holism" very seriously. I wrote a rather benign (I though at least) piece while having coffee the other morning about my observations on the new iPhone coming out June 11th. You can read it here. If you do not care to read it, the gist was that a $600 cell phone will not be a hit. I went on to explain some of my issues with it and finished by saying Apple (APPL)should "cut the price to $299 and you may have something".... [[ This is a content summary only. enough emotion and bad hair angst...back in business
Thought for Today: "El amor es fuego, pero con el no se cuece el puchero." (Love is a furnace, but it will not cook the stew.) — Spanish proverb.Sudiegirl's response: Well, thank God for microwaves, then...Well. It's Thursday. In an effort to return you all to your comfort zones and give you what you expect, I'm back in business. Remember, though...I share because I care. Maybe I care...TOO MUCH? Nah...Anyway...the weather is chilly here in DC right now, but it's expected to reach 71 degrees or so. That'd be nice to experience, eh? Cherry blossom season is comin' soon. That's the best time of year around these parts...I think I've said it before but that doesn't change my opinion. The parade leaves a little bit to be desired, but when the tidal basin is awash in pink and white, it just makes me quiver a smidge.So...current events thingies...Top of my list: JOHN EDWARDS. Yes, he is still a cutie patootie, but now add "decent guy" to the list. You know, I just keep h

Kenna - Out Of Control (State of Emotion)
Im sure you noticed the post we did yesterday about great music in commericials. One of the commercials higlighted was the one from Sony for their PSP in which a girl makes a scavenger hunt type puzzle for your boyfriend to track her down with, via the PSP. The tune playing in the background is from Kenna, (who was raised here in Cincinnati) and who is finally making a new record, his first since the 2003 debut, New Sacred Cow. It turns out the song got its official premiere on East Village Radio last October. The song then later became available on ITunes in December. Fans went kinda nutty over this new song and began searching for information, only to come up empty handed for awhile. Well, its turns out there is some official news now regarding the return of Kenna. He will be releasing a new album sometime this Spring on Star Trak Records, an imprint of Interscope. Emotion
What is my emotion now?  I don’t know.  I have just released my thoughts in a protected post.  I cannot risk her or anyone in the office to read my blog. Going back to my initial question…  What is my feeling now?  Really mixed.  I am sad.  I am frustrated.  I am angry (with whom?  myself?)  I regret.  I…  I just want to cry.  And I am starting to cry now.  Oh!  Gosh!  Stop it! I am lost.  I don’t know how to handle this situation.  I am very lousy.  I am just so lousy that I don’t know how to handle relationship.  Everythings I say, I say it wrong.  Every steps I do, I do them wrong.  Every words I write, I write them wrong. If I am always been misinterpreted, it must be my problem. I wish I can live in a shell alone, don’t have to deal with any human being.  I am just too lousy in this.  I am just not good in everything.  I feel so down, so little, so inadequate, so…

Wolves Emotion Shows With Win In Memphis
Understandably, the Wolves offense runs with much more ease when Kevin Garnett is on the floor, so one of the tough tasks for Coach Casey is to figure out when to get him rest. Coach should implement the Michael Jordan substitution for Garnett as that would most likely be the most effective use of the Big Ticket throughout the game. The Michael Jordan substitution was to sit with two or three minutes left in both the first and third quarters, utilizing those extra few minutes between quarters. Re-entering the game with roughly 8 ½ to 9 minutes left in the second and fourth quarters, Jordan was able to finish the games strong yet. He was also back in the game before an opponent's run got out of hand. It is also great to see Justin Reed getting minutes, although he is only on the court that much due to the injury to Marko Jaric. How about the rebound Reed grabbed while sitting on the floor? Great hustle. Writers are always quick to criticize, but slow to praise when a player, coach or

      Linguistics And Emotion
Images which are decidedly asymmetric often have a different "feel' when oriented in one direction as compared to the other. This is important since it effects the message conveyed by an image and in the digital era it is a trivial matter to flip an image on its horizontal or vertical axis.In cultures where language is read from left to right, images that "flow' from left to right (or have an isolated subject placed on the left) are said to feel more peaceful than those which have a flow in the opposite, or right to left direction. The theory is that eye movement from right to left goes against the natural tendency for people to "read' an image from left to right, thereby causing a sense of tension. In cultures where written language is read from right to left, the opposite is said to be true. This can, at times, be used in a subtle fashion to accentuate the feeling we are trying to convey in an image. I am not suggesting that an emotionless image will suddenly come to life
