On June 5, 1873, in a letter to The Times, Sir Francis Galton, the cousin of Charles Darwin and a distinguished African explorer in his own right, outlined a daring (if by today's standards utterly offensive) new method to 'tame' and colonise what was then known as the Dark Continent. 'My proposal is to make the encouragement of Chinese settlements of Africa a part of our national policy, in the b

I found out about this book from my old buddy Dan Kimball. It's a critique on emergent that he recommended as a fair look. You can read Dan's review, too. But read mine first. The Set-UpThis book is written by two very different guys. One is a theology-loving logical kinda guy. He's a 30-year-old pastor in a college town. The other is a story-telling journalist, artsy type. He goes to the pastor's
Personal and Organizational Relationships in a Global Networked World: Emergent Ethical ChallengesHawaiian International Conference on System SciencesThis mini-track for HICSS-42 examines ethical issues related to work-life balance, virtual world behavior, privacy, intellectual property, accuracy, accountability, and similar issues posed by the design and adoption of information systems in a globally networked world. Our personal and professional decisions for the design and adoption of information technologies make implicit (and sometimes explicit) choices to enable or inhibit particular behavioral norms. Such decisions have ethical dimensions that may not always be evident, and the purpose of this mini-track is to stimulate a discourse on these ethical dimensions.Researchers are encourag

I noticed that no one else posted on this, so I thought I’d give it a shot.
Is anyone else subscribed to the Pastor to Pastor podcast from CCOF? If not, you should be. There are some great gems there. If you are, did you listen to the Mark Drisoll episode from earlier in October? [...]
CALL FOR ESSAYS ON "EMERGENT INDIGENEITIES"From: Kim Fortun and Mike, Editors, Cultural AnthropologyIn spring 2007, the Board of the Society for Cultural Anthropology deliberated signing a letter drafted by the American Anthropological Association to be sent to the United Nations advocating passage of the Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The letter generated intense discussion because of recognition among Board members that indigenous and minority status is configured very differently in different regions of the world, such that policies and programs addressed to ³indigenous rights² have varied effects, and sometimes occlude critical political dynamics. The SCA decided to sign the letter, eager to support the gains some groups have achieved within the rubric of ³indigenous rights.² The Board also agreed that the Society's journal, Cultural Anthropology, could play a role in drawing out differences among indigenous groups, and how the rubric of indigenous righ
With Josh and I being called the Kathy Griffins of the Emergent Network, I follow Kathy Griffin.
So I was wowed today when I found out that she is dating Woz. Someone else I follow closely.
Here is the story. I also forgot that she was in Pulp Fiction. I think it is crazy that the story cites that, if memory serves me she is in the movie for about 10 seconds.
M.A. Aziz Alaouni, " Emergent Properties in Natural and Artificial Dynamical Systems "Springer | ISBN-10: 3540348220 | 1st edition (September 25, 2006) | PDF | 281 pages | 15.38 MBThe aim of this book is to study emergent properties arising through dynamical processes in various types of natural and artificial systems. It is related to multidisciplinary approaches in order to obtain several representations of complex systems using various methods to extract emergent structures.Complex systems are a new scientific frontier which has emerged in the past decades with the advance of modern technology and the study of new parametric fields in natural systems. Emergence besides refers to the appearance of higher levels of system properties and behaviour that even if obviously originated in the collective dynamics of system’s components are neither found in nor directly deductible from the lower level properties of this system. Emergent properties are properties of the ‘whole’ not posse
Quick reminder: The Washngton, DC Emergent Cohort is meeting tonight. I'll steal Sara's words from the official DC Cohort Blog:June 11th will bring us Wes White, an American theologican who lives in Glasgow, Scotland and is spearheading the TREK (Theological Resoursing for an Emerging Kultur) across Europe. We are grateful that Wes was able to stay an extra day on his journey across the pond to spend an evening with us. TREK springs from the concept of sharing around the local table and in healthy mission.White writes, "TREK is premised on the conviction that there is good and bad theology, and that the distance between the two is best measured by mission. Furthermore, we, the TREK Team, beleive that good theology includes facts (history, geography, personages, events, ect.) , but so much more. Healthy theology fancies the narrative, the nuance, the give and take, the mystery, the passion, and the imagination. In short, it personifies the freedom that inheres in God himself who is
:: WHAT IS MISSIONAL CHURCH? And Emerging or Emergent Churches? A video conversation (see video link below) between Alan Roxburgh and Ryan Bolger gives some answers.VAD ÄR MISSIONAL CHURCH? One topic which has come up over and over again is the emerging/ emergent church. Christianity Today did a special feature on the phenomenon and provides a staggering amount of reading material on its website. This would be a great place to get a lay of the land on the subject and get a sense of some of the core issues.

Days 2 and 3 brought quite a few hours of working at EIS and running into some fun folks like AKMA, Matthew, Jake, Justin, Myles and Sarah. I was able to catch up with two good friends from Princeton (Kellen & Dan) and Sarah and I ran into a lot of people last night at the Princeton Seminary Party.
Yesterday, I finally made it to a session, "What is Emergent?" Brian McLaren, Phyllis Tickle and Pete Rollins (pictured above) led a lively and packed discussion about Emergent and its role in the church and in theological discourse. The day before, a friend asked me why Emergent still needs to have seminars entitled "What is Emergent?" He said, "You know, all you guys have to do is put out a Press Release and then you can move on!" To some degree, I agree. Since I've been involved in this conversation for around 3.5 years, it does start to get a little 'old' to go to sessions that seem to rehash much of the same things...but as was clear yesterday, there are still plenty people who a
I'm sure you've already heard about it, but the Emergent Theological Philosophical Conversation has just been announced today on the Emergent Village blog here. April 14-16 at Eastern University in Philadelphia...with John Caputo. Fabulous topic: "What Would Jesus Deconstruct? A Conversation about Justice." Sarah and I have a fair amount of traveling we're hoping to do in the spring, but I'm hoping it might work out that I could attend.
However, I'll definitely be at Mainline Emergent/s at Columbia Theological Seminary, January 30 - February 1, and hope to see many of you there. Does anyone know for sure if they are going? I will be co-leading a seminar with Karen Sloan entitled "Practice and Presbyterianism: Emergence as Re-formation." Anyway, some great events coming up. Thanks Emergent.
If you're going to be in Atlanta around January 30 - February 1, I'd encourage you to consider coming to the Columbia Theological Seminary January Seminar entitled "Mainline Emergent/s: Conversations in Theology, Practice and Hope." It's going to be a great time, and it's going to be awesome to be able to spend a few days with some good friends, including Brian McLaren, Doug Pagitt, Tony Jones, Diana Butler Bass, Karen Ward, Nanette Sawyer, Troy Bronsink, Saranell and Tim Hartman, Jake Myers, Jay Voorhees, Holly Rankin Zaher and others.Short Description: How can mainline congregations be a part of - and inform the conversation about - the emergent church? Join us for stimulating conversations among emergent/s and mainline leaders, as we discuss the church's mission, practice and hope in God's world. It should be a great few days. If you want to check out the entire brochure, click here. If you're around Atlanta and can attend, it would be great to see you there.
Please attend to this important notice, lifted verbatim from my friend Steve's blog:
we finally got word on the location for the october meeting of the dc emergent cohort. it'll be held at, gulp, wesley tholeogical seminary. You are invited to join them for dinner in their refectory from 5:30 'til 6:30 ($7.50) or just show up at the Kresge Building and follow signs for the 7 PM discussion with Diana Butler Bass on her new book, Christianity for the Rest of Us.
I'd recommend you come, it'll be good even though its at Wesley.
That parting comment is due to Steve's being part of a rival gang, known as Virginia Theological Seminary. Perhaps if you come, you will see Wesley and VTS folks dancing and snapping and wielding jackknives, just like in West Side Story. ;-)
Thanks, Steve, for the words I stole. "Don't shade your eyes - plagiarize!" :-D
UPDATE: A comment from Steve reminded me that urban hoods (and, presumably, rumbling urban seminarians) use switchblades, not jackkn
Hi folks. I'm back, if only for a brief post. Sorry I've been away.
Here's what I wanted to mention: If, when you hear any or all of the terms "missional", "emerging", or "emergent" (in relation to the church), you react in some way (personal identification, curiosity, aversion, whatever) - and especially if your thinking goes like "well, I might be X, but I'm pretty sure I'm not Y, and I'm not sure I like Y very much, to be honest..." then please take a look at what Jamie is saying on this subject here and here.
That's all.
Peace,Mike
I haven't had a whole lot of time to post lately, but I wanted to say that I had a great time at Guapos past Thursday with the newly-forming Washington, DC Emergent Cohort. I met a lot of diverse and fascinating followers of Jesus, and had some yummy Mexican food too. If you're interested in the church that is emerging and you're in or near the DC area, keep an eye on the Cohort blog (linked above) or e-mail me for more info.
