The United States Embassy yesterday donated $25,000 to five local organizations to help defray the cost of fighting HIV/AIDS in The Bahamas in one of the first crucial undertakings on this front for new U.S. Ambassador to The Bahamas Ned Siegel.
The five organizations that benefited were the AIDS Foundation [$5,930, the Bahamas National Network for Positive Living (BNN) [$5,000, Focus on Youth [$5,455], HIV/AIDS Secretariat [$5,000] and Youth Ambassadors for Positive Living [$4,000].
The donation came ahead of World Aids Day which will be commemorated around the globe on December 1st under the theme "Take the Lead… Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise."

The information on the laptops included residence certification, overseas voting registrations, and passport information. The information on residence certification also include personal details such as date of birth, name, permanent address in Japan, occupation, and family information. Because of the fears expressed regarding personal identity theft, my guess is that there was nothing such as AlertBoot ensuring the safety of the information on the laptops via encryption.

The U.S. Embassy in Indonesia is advising Americans to avoid contact with stray cats in the country, citing confirmed reports of the animals carrying the deadly bird flu virus.In a posting on its Web site Wednesday, the embassy addressed the risk from the H5N1 virus in Indonesia, where that strain of bird flu is endemic in chickens and has killed more humans than in other nation. "There have been confirmed reports that wild and stray cats have been shown to carry H5N1," the embassy said. "While there have been no documented cases of feline-to-human transmission of H5N1, it is important to avoid contact with wild and stray cats."

Jamal Jafaar Mohammed was sentenced to death in Kuwait after the bombings of the US and French Embassies, but now is an Iraqi Lawmaker according the United States military intelligence. Having this position provides Jamal with immunity from prosecution.

US Embassy has warned Americans of terrorist threats against the westerners in Sudan. A message from the US Embassy reads, “The U.S. Embassy advises all U.S. citizens in Sudan that the United Nations mission in Sudan has received new information that an extremist group based in the country is likely to target Western interests.”
The United Nations sent a similar message to its people in Sudan last week, but were not supposed to speak to journalists on this issue. Joel Maybury, U.S. Embassy spokesman, said that this procedure is standard whenever threats are received, and “In places like Sudan, where you have instability and conflict, we may have half a dozen such messages a year.”
Some of the Sudanese are angry at the United Nations for promoting a peace process in southern Sudan. The UN has 10,000 peacekeepers in the south end of Sudan with approximately 2,500 civilian staff throughout all of Sudan.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) The U.S. Navy has picked up signals from the flight data recorder, or black box, of an Indonesian passenger plane that crashed into the sea on New Year's Day with 102 people onboard. The U.S. Mary Sears located signals ``on the same frequency of the black boxes associated with the missing airplane,'' a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta said. It was unclear when the signals were detected.
