In commemorating International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Angered by the hardening stance on immigration-related issues, Elvira Arellano will be holding hunger strike outside the US Embassy. She told the the Prensa Latina, “On behalf of the thousands of undocumented people, we demand the end of abuse against Mexicans in US territory.”
Elvira Arellano spoke out in behalf of thousands of immigrant women here in the United States. She demanded that Mexican families living in the United States receive decent treatment and being treated as terrorist. Unfortunately, here in the US, immigrant women are violently separated from their children. Arellano’s message should be a reminder that an immigrants journey North is to seek work, in order to provide a better future for their family.
When it comes to violence against women, it is a direct consequence of the inequalities between women and men. Poverty, marginalization and certain aspects of women&rsq
The deportation of immigrant rights activist Elvira Arellano by federal authorities on August 20 has been seen either as a blow or as the reigniting of the immigrant rights movement. I know I have seen my fair share of comments of support on this blog, as well a large number of vile comments about her and her plight that are still in the moderation queue. As humans, we have a tendency to demonize a person to justify our dislike. Regardless how a person worded their comment, their message was the same, Arellano is just another attention grabbing, “criminal alien and immigration fugitive,” unfairly using her American-born son as an Elián González for a pro-immigration agenda.
Arellano, the woman at the center of the storm is a 32-year old single mother, a former airport worker and undocumented immigrant. On Aug 15, 2006, Arellano took her son Saúl, born in the US and therefore a citizen, and entered Adalberto United Methodist church. Since then, she has spent a year living
“The Sanctuary Movement was a religious and political movement of approximately 500 congregations in the U.S. that helped Central American refugees by sheltering them from Immigration and Naturalization Service authorities. The movement flourished between 1982 and 1992. Various denominations were involved, including Roman Catholics, Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Jews, Unitarian Universalists, Quakers and Mennonites.” — Quote [...]
Elvira Arellano was arrested about 3PM by law enforcement officials after leaving Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in downtown Los Angeles, according to Aztlan Electronic News. Arellano was scheduled to fly to Washington D.C. to lobby congress to reach and immigration reform agreement.
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that after talking to news media inside the church, Arellano and her supporters got into their van to head north to San Jose, where she was scheduled to speak at another church, when suddenly an unmarked vehicle stopped them. When the driver of Arellano’s van, Roberto Lopez, poked his head out of the van to see why the van blocked them, several other unmarked vehicles surrounded their van.
Agents came out of all the cars screaming at the top of their lungs for her to get out, Lozano said. Her 8-year-old son, Saul, started to cry, and Arellano said to everyone in the car, “Calm down. Don’t have any fear. They can’t hurt me.”
Then she turned to
“She can’t take me to the store and can’t take me to school. It makes me feel a little bad. My friends - they have their moms and their dads,”
“I want President Bush to end the deportations so my mom and other families can stay here in the United States.”

"Immigrants Rights Activist," Elvira Arellano. Where else but in the U.S. could someone breaking the law get away with this farce? Arellano, "illegal immigrant" and two time deportee is an "immigrants rights activist" in the tradition of who, Rosa Parks?
Is Saulito going to be honored as well? Afterall he has been involved in negotiations down Mexico way.

"I'm here and here I'll stay until the government reforms laws that tear families apart." - Elvira Arellano (oddly enough spoken in Spanish)Elvira Arellano, "immigrant rights activist" has sent the prodigal son out again; this time to Miami to join the protest against the Swift & Co. raid that netted 1,300 "undocumented" workers.

I, like most people I hope (if not, please suggest good places to be committed), can be contradictory. For example, it does my heart no good that there are those seeking a better life for themselves and their families must resort to entering the U.S. illegally to do so.Yet, the other side of the coin is that this is not legal, so ultimately I have very little pity especially when many here in the U.S. illegally are clamoring and fighting to change my country. For a good example of this read the post below from Morning Coffee.I can also be contradictory in that I have an intense dislike of polls in combination with the medias and politicians dependency upon them.Yet, what do you know, I like taking them.I took a Zogby poll this morning regarding healthcare in the U.S.. The poll obviously asked for opinion on healthcare, but there were the many oddball, "what does this question have to do with healthcare." which are the questions that allow polling companies like Zog, to put some respon
