For those who’ve been fretting about the fate of poor Sanjaya… fret no longer. Spitzer’s $120.6 Billion Budget Hikes Spending 3x Inflation Rate Governor Spitzer unveiled his first budget proposal last week with a claim that the proposal does not include any new taxes. The state-funded portion of Spitzer’s $121 billion Executive Budget, however, calls for a spending hike of 7.8 percent - three times the projected inflation rate for the state’s 2007-08 fiscal year, which begins April 1. According to fiscal estimates, the state will be facing a $2.3 billion budget shortfall next year and $6.3 billion by the end of his first term in 2010-11 if no further changes are made. There has been a lot of talk around the blogosphere about Spitzer, his reform agenda and his willingness to fight with Silver and Bruno.  From what I’ve seen so far, he is doing the same thing he did as State Attorney General.  He is keeping his name in the headlines to gain favorable publicity.  Taken on its face, his actions appear to be laudable.  Further examination reveals the stark truth.  Below are my comments that I left on another blog. I still have virtually no faith in Spitzer. His proposed budget with 2,468 new state jobs and a 6.3% spending increase is indefensible. Then you look at the money he wants to throw at public education, $40 million for Buffalo alone.  That is like buying a bottle for an alcoholic. In light of his propensity for government programs and spending to improve things, his reform agenda is meaningless. Whether you have Silver & Bruno's pork or Spitzer's version of socialism, it is all government waste.

The nation’s State Attorney Generals have been ranked using specific criteria.  I have maintained, since way before Day 1, that Eliot Spitzer abused the power of his office to extort settlements out of private enterprises.  Those actions were done for the intent of enhancing his political stock and to aid his ambition for more power and a higher elective office.  Spitzer easily made the list of the Top Ten Worst Attorney Generals. Although these abuses are widespread, some attorneys general are worse than others. Today’s Buffalo News has an article about a group of Western New Yorkers who have penetrated Spitzer’s inner circle.  These are the go-to guys when Eliot needs advice.  The News refers to the group as “Friends of Eliot.”  A more appropriate name would be “Enemies of the State.”  Spitzer is rapidly proving the old adage, “if you do what you always did, you’ll get what you always got.” Western New Yorkers who have penetrated the new governor’s inner circle include Robert G. It was announced last week that Eliot Spitzer is going to have two Co-Chairmen for the New York State Empire Development Corp.  One for Upstate and one for Downstate. On the surface this appears to be good news for residents of Upstate New York.  The thought is that finally our voices will be heard and something will be done to benefit the economy of Upstate which is performing poorly compared to Downstate. I don’t question the need for Upstate to have a voice and demand some benefits.  What I do question is the necessity to create two offices when there was only one.  Two offices and two Co-Chairmen will lead to  more staff positions added and increased office expenses. Last night Eliot Spitzer was interviewed on Channel 7’s news while touring the Buffalo area.  He was discussing the economic doldrums here.  While stating that the State would need to take steps to turn around our economy, he said “it is going to be difficult.” Isn’t that why he was elected?  He promised to make the hard choices, the choices between right and wrong that are necessary to “rightsize” government in this State.
