Mr Watson made it look elementary!
Slide Presentation by Eric Watson I stayed on at Southbourne Literary Society for the second half of last week's programme: a presentation with slides on 'The History of the Bournemouth Fire Brigade' by Mr Eric Watson, one of this area's most respected speakers. Now, the mere mention of any kind of slide show can produce negative feelings in many people! Perhaps they have found themselves sitting through a neighbour's proud projection of seemingly endless, boring holiday snaps or some dry lecture interrupted by a series of technical hitches with the visual aids. They may even have been subjected to a spectacular but ultimately bafflng modern power point presentation which added nothing to a training day. All I can say is that Eric Watson's slide shows are extremely well-received, in fact next year will see his 1,000th speaking engagement since 1993! He started his presentation by telling the audience that although they may have seen a well-known book by anothe

TT - 13 Lines - Are you a true elementary school teacher? Let's find out:
      1. Do you ask guests if they have remembered their scarves and mittens as they leave your home?2. Do you move your dinner partner's glass away from the edge of the table?3. Do you ask if anyone needs to go to the bathroom as you enter a theater with a group of friends?4. Do you hand a tissue to anyone who sneezes?5. Do you refer to happy hour as "snack time?"6. Do you say "I like the way you did that!" to the mechanic who repairs your car to your satisfaction?7. Do you ask "Are you sure you did your best?" to the mechanic who fails to repair your car to your satisfaction?8. Do you sing the "Alphabet Song" to yourself as you look up a number in the phone book?9. Do you say everything twice? I mean, do you repeat everything?10. Do you fold your spouse's fingers over the coins as you hand him/her the money at a tollbooth?-If you answered yes to 4 or more, it's in your soul--you are hooked on teaching. Elementary Education
What you may learn in Houston elementary schools these days: Calling a woman "miss" means "mistress"; and "mister" means "slave master".Sugar is cocaine.McDonald's should be called "Crack Donald's" and Burger King should be called "Murder King" because the hormones in the food will kill you.Hair permanents and makeup cause cancer.Toothpaste contains rat poison.I'm sure that the bogus moon landings and this whole "round earth" malarkey were debunked by the sub, as well. The substitute teacher who taught a 5th graders this (as part of a health class) has promised to stick to the script from now on. Parents are, understandably, not satisfied.Tags: Houston, School, Substitute Teacher, Misinformation, Propaganda, Wacko

Christmas Games For Elementary Age Children
By: Elmo Kandel If you're planning a Christmas party for a group of elementary-age children, there are a myriad of really fun games you can include. Be sure to have lots of prizes and take lots of pictures because some of the games can be silly! To get the kids moving around, start with the "fill the stocking" game. In this game, create teams so there are at least 3 people and no more than perhaps 6 people on each team. Have a stocking for each team. Place the stockings on the wall and have also a bowl of candy and spoons. The first person on each team will put the spoon in their mouth (backwards, so the bowl of the spoon is sticking out) and get some candy out of the bowl. Still holding their spoon in their mouth, they must walk or run to the stocking on the wall and get the candy in the stocking. They run back to the line and the next child has a turn (each child should have his or her on spoon). The game continues until the candy bowl is empty. The obvious prize for the stocking game

Linking Reading Assessment to Instruction: An Application Worktext for Elementary Classroom Teachers, Fourth Edition
Arleen Shearer Mariotti & Susan P. Homan (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers) "Linking Reading Assessment to Instruction—a worktext for individuals who are or intend to be teachers—reflects our cumulative efforts at preparing teachers for the classroom. Over the years we have been teaching reading methods, reading diagnosis, and corrective reading courses, we have found that many of the texts we use with our students provide excellent information on a theoretical level, but few offer adequate practice activities in instructional and assessment techniques appropriate for the elementary classroom. We decided to write this text to make these kinds of application activities widely available. It is intended as a supplement to be used along with the "standard" texts normally used in pre-service or in-service courses. In deciding to produce a fourth edition of this worktext, we were guided by our desire to ensure that we were continuing to meet the demands of elementary teachers.

It would be a waste of a good tray, old chap, if I were to use a whole blasted tray for one drink.” Him: (Visibly angry) Me: “Plus, with the way everything is just buggers in this tavern t’night, I thought I’d let me friends take the trays for all those plates of fish and chips hot off the steamer for the rest of the pat

Kentucky student test scores up since 2002: in Reading and Math, in Elementary, Middle and High School
But the improvements aren't necessarily due to the No Child Left Behind Act, researchers say.Student achievement nationwide has increased since the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002, but that federal law is not necessarily the reason, according to researchers who looked at results from 50 states. These gains fall well short of the law's goal of getting all students performing at grade level or better by 2014, said the report, released Tuesday by the Center on Education Policy, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit. (CEP Press Release here.)"...[T]here is more evidence of achievement gaps between groups of students narrowing since 2002 than of gaps widening. Still, the magnitude of the gaps is often substantial," the researchers wrote....The researchers claim independence from partisans battling over No Child Left Behind, which is up for reauthorization by Congress this year. Their only expressed opinion is regarding the need for better, more consistent and more transparen

Mike Rebell weighs in on the Class Size debate - Harrison Elementary goes against conventional wisdom to raise scores
EduWonk Andrew Rotherham opines that reducing class size without addressing teacher quality more broadly is akin to continually adding pitchers to your bullpen without worrying about whether any of them can even throw a fastball. And Mike Rebell tells the New York Daily News, "As co-counsel for those who brought the landmark Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit, I know how important class size reduction ultimately will be. But improving the quality of our teachers and principals must be priority No. 1. And a premature class-size reduction mandate is likely to lower the general quality of the teaching staff at a time when we desperately need to be raising it."~Arguably THE most consistent variable that affects student achievement is teacher quality and there is no substitute for that. But class size reductions help good teachers help struggling students.Locally, some have misunderstood the class size issue - and have done away with the effort all together. Squires Elementary students help fight pediatric cancer
On Wednesday, students from Squires Elementary joined more than 1,500 students nationwide to kick off a national community service event to help fight pediatric cancer. The students connected to each other by using high tech videoconference and networking technology. The event is in support of the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a national organization that grew out of the Philadelphia front yard lemonade stand started by Alexandra “Alex” Scott, a pediatric cancer patient. In 2000, at the age of four, Alex opened her first lemonade stand with high hopes of raising money for pediatric cancer causes. Every year thereafter, Alex held an annual lemonade stand in her Pennsylvania front yard and inspired others to donate money to the cause. While sadly Alex lost her battle with cancer in 2004, her work has motivated students around the country to continue her charitable legacy.More than 19 schools are involved in the event from across the country and are lead by Penn Wynne Ele

Time spent in High-quality day care centers was correlated with Higher Vocabulary Scores through elementary school. But, that's only the Good News.
Photo by Bill Crandall for the New York TimesPoor Behavior Is Linked to Time in Day Care A much-anticipated report from the largest and longest-running study of American child care has found that keeping a preschooler in a day care center for a year or more increased the likelihood that the child would become disruptive in class — and that the effect persisted through the sixth grade. The effect was slight, and well within the normal range for healthy children, the researchers found. And as expected, parents’ guidance and their genes had by far the strongest influence on how children behaved. But the finding held up regardless of the child’s sex or family income, and regardless of the quality of the day care center. With more than two million American preschoolers attending day care, the increased disruptiveness very likely contributes to the load on teachers who must manage large classrooms, the authors argue. This from the New York Times.

Chunking Ideas: Planning Elementary Student Lessons
I thought I’d blog an an education subject this morning since I’ve been doing some research on it.  To begin, I’d like to acknowledge the fact that simple subjects, like division or dictionary skills, can feel daunting when teaching the upper elemenatry children (ages 7-11).  Don’t feel bad if you have felt baffled as to getting these things across.  I have one technique in planning and delivery that has proven effective every time I used it.  I call it “chunking.”  Chunking is dividing many small bits of new information into larger “chunks” or categories that are quickly visible and memorable by the children.  Once you have your lesson “chunked,” it’s much smoother to deliver and I have found the kids retain much more of the concept being taught.  Here’s how I do it: First, identify the standard(s) to be taught.  Nowadays, most California teachers have the standards virtually memorized if not bookmarked on
