Christmas Games For Elementary Age ChildrenBy: Elmo Kandel If you're planning a Christmas party for a group of elementary-age children, there are a myriad of really fun games you can include. Be sure to have lots of prizes and take lots of pictures because some of the games can be silly! To get the kids moving around, start with the "fill the stocking" game. Still holding their spoon in their mouth, they must walk or run to the stoc

I told you earlier that 4th grade was an important time for me. Here is the first of many recollections re: that period of time in my life.In 1976, I was nine years old and entering the fourth grade. I had attended Indian Village Elementary school since kindergarten and had felt pretty comfortable in my surroundings, although - and I know you'll find this hard to believe - I was an extremely introverted child. I had fantastic teachers for K-3rd and for fourth grade, I was looking forward to having Mrs. Mitchell. She was an older woman who ran a very strict classroom setting but I heard, she was the best.Imagine my surprise when two days before school, we stopped by to pick up my books, and found out that my teacher wouldn't be Mrs. Mitchell. It was to be a new teacher, Mrs. Crowley. I

Say hello to my first grade class from Indian Village Elementary School. The year (according to the picture) is 1973 and Mrs. Marci Lawson is the inspirational teacher - keeping us all in check. We were located in Room 19 (yes I know - scary that I remember this). Our desks were simple, in a complicated way. They weren't the fancy ones that opened up on top. Oh no! They were the kind that opened up to your waist area. Many things could get lost (and subsequently - GROW) in this area. Emptying these types of desks out at the end of the year was always an anxiety-filled moment because one never knew what people like Brian Blazer and Ralph Barva would pull out of the nooks and cranies of these wooden hothouses.ANYWAYIf you attended Fort Wayne Community Schools (the elementary ones) in the early
This from Teacher Magazine:Living HistoryOne educator aims to bring history full circle by pushing to revive a historic school. Silence fills the halls and classrooms of Sumner Elementary School in Topeka, Kan.—the building where the landmark 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education school-segregation case originated.Despite its historic role in the country's education system, Sumner closed its doors as a school in 1996. Since then it has been used as a storage unit, a police training facility, and an art project for vandals. But now one educator is fighting to reopen the site as an affordable private school.“Sumner’s the first in integration, and Sumner should be the first in innovation,” Sandra Lassiter, a former Topeka elementary school principal who is spearheading the effort, said in

This from FOX 8, WGHP, High Point NC:HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) -- An apparent ongoing dispute between three parents erupted into a physical fight at an elementary school's Christmas program Tuesday night.Children in the first through third grades at Oak Hill Elementary School had just completed about three-quarters of the program when three parents began fighting.Witnesses said the fight lasted about 10 minutes, and, according to an account by principal Sara Roberts, started when a father approached a student about pushing his daughter while on stage:According to witnesses, the argument started by a father who approached another student about pushing his daughter while on stage. The one parent (not of the student who pushed) told the father to not talk to a child about that but to take it up with the principal. At that point, two other parents (twin sisters) began yelling and shouting. I had to stop the program and remind everyone to be respectful to the children on stage. However, t

Slide Presentation by Eric Watson
I stayed on at Southbourne Literary Society for the second half of last week's programme: a presentation with slides on 'The History of the Bournemouth Fire Brigade' by Mr Eric Watson, one of this area's most respected speakers.
Now, the mere mention of any kind of slide show can produce negative feelings in many people! Perhaps they have found themselves sitting through a neighbour's proud projection of seemingly endless, boring holiday snaps or some dry lecture interrupted by a series of technical hitches with the visual aids. They may even have been subjected to a spectacular but ultimately bafflng modern power point presentation which added nothing to a training day.
All I can say is that Eric Watson's slide shows are extremely well-received, in fact next year will see his 1,000th speaking engagement since 1993!
He started his presentation by telling the audience that although they may have seen a well-known book by anothe

Watson answers, "I see millions of stars."
"And what does that tell you?" asks Holmes.
Watson considers the question momentarily and replies, "Astronomically speaking, it tells me

But the improvements aren't necessarily due to the No Child Left Behind Act, researchers say.Student achievement nationwide has increased since the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002, but that federal law is not necessarily the reason, according to researchers who looked at results from 50 states. These gains fall well short of the law's goal of getting all students performing at grade level or better by 2014, said the report, released Tuesday by the Center on Education Policy, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit. (CEP Press Release here.)"...[T]here is more evidence of achievement gaps between groups of students narrowing since 2002 than of gaps widening. Still, the magnitude of the gaps is often substantial," the researchers wrote....The researchers claim independence from partisans battling over No Child Left Behind, which is up for reauthorization by Congress this year. Their only expressed opinion is regarding the need for better, more consistent and more transparen

EduWonk Andrew Rotherham opines that reducing class size without addressing teacher quality more broadly is akin to continually adding pitchers to your bullpen without worrying about whether any of them can even throw a fastball. And Mike Rebell tells the New York Daily News, "As co-counsel for those who brought the landmark Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit, I know how important class size reduction ultimately will be. But improving the quality of our teachers and principals must be priority No. 1. And a premature class-size reduction mandate is likely to lower the general quality of the teaching staff at a time when we desperately need to be raising it."~Arguably THE most consistent variable that affects student achievement is teacher quality and there is no substitute for that. But class size reductions help good teachers help struggling students.Locally, some have misunderstood the class size issue - and have done away with the effort all together. Hawthorne's bilingual program, where 200 students are taught in Spanish for half the school day and in English the other half, is one of only two of its kind in Kentucky. The other is at Maxwell Elementary in Lexington.Since adopting the programs, both schools have seen their test scores increase dramatically."When we first started it, people were afraid that the students wouldn't do well," Hawthorne teacher Flora Martinez said. Hawthorne's scores have risen more than 30 points to 95.6 on the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System since it began the program in 2002.And Maxwell has seen its scores climb 11 points to 100 since 1999.At both schools, math and science are taught in Spanish and reading and social studies are taught in English. This from the Courier-Journal.
On Wednesday, students from Squires Elementary joined more than 1,500 students nationwide to kick off a national community service event to help fight pediatric cancer. The students connected to each other by using high tech videoconference and networking technology. The event is in support of the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a national organization that grew out of the Philadelphia front yard lemonade stand started by Alexandra “Alex” Scott, a pediatric cancer patient. In 2000, at the age of four, Alex opened her first lemonade stand with high hopes of raising money for pediatric cancer causes. Every year thereafter, Alex held an annual lemonade stand in her Pennsylvania front yard and inspired others to donate money to the cause. While sadly Alex lost her battle with cancer in 2004, her work has motivated students around the country to continue her charitable legacy.More than 19 schools are involved in the event from across the country and are lead by Penn Wynne Ele
Photo by Bill Crandall for the New York TimesPoor Behavior Is Linked to Time in Day Care A much-anticipated report from the largest and longest-running study of American child care has found that keeping a preschooler in a day care center for a year or more increased the likelihood that the child would become disruptive in class — and that the effect persisted through the sixth grade. The effect was slight, and well within the normal range for healthy children, the researchers found. And as expected, parents’ guidance and their genes had by far the strongest influence on how children behaved. But the finding held up regardless of the child’s sex or family income, and regardless of the quality of the day care center. With more than two million American preschoolers attending day care, the increased disruptiveness very likely contributes to the load on teachers who must manage large classrooms, the authors argue. This from the New York Times.

I thought I’d blog an an education subject this morning since I’ve been doing some research on it. To begin, I’d like to acknowledge the fact that simple subjects, like division or dictionary skills, can feel daunting when teaching the upper elemenatry children (ages 7-11). Don’t feel bad if you have felt baffled as to getting these things across. I have one technique in planning and delivery that has proven effective every time I used it. I call it “chunking.” Chunking is dividing many small bits of new information into larger “chunks” or categories that are quickly visible and memorable by the children. Once you have your lesson “chunked,” it’s much smoother to deliver and I have found the kids retain much more of the concept being taught. Here’s how I do it:
First, identify the standard(s) to be taught. Nowadays, most California teachers have the standards virtually memorized if not bookmarked on
