      Hot News: BMW's Electric Car
BMW is poised to give the go-ahead to a tiny Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) that will help to revolutionise city-centre driving. The rear-engined city car could be called Isetta and will first arrive in American showrooms in 2012. The project was created because of new Californian regulations (soon to be copied by 12 other US states) which require big car makers to sell between a few hundred and a few thousand ZEVs every year from 2012. However, global sales of the new model are also likely, because BMW has decided that the concept will be ideal for sale in cities all around the world. Indeed, many European cities have already established low-emissions zones. BMW chief Norbert Reithofer recently said the company “would be obliged to sell a Zero Emissions Vehicle under the US regula

The company hopes to produce 1,200 cars in its Aurskog, Norway, plant this year. Meanwhile Th!nk apparently has secured financial backing from US partners and are planning to set up a plant in California, too. It has been a bumpy road for Th!nk since the first prototype was introduced in 1991. The TH!NK City model (in its fifth incarnation above) first entered production in 1999, when the Ford Motor Company was a major shareholder and sunk some USD 150 million into the operation. Electric car goal could be cut again - State Panel’s staff suggests target of just 2,500 vehicles
California’s once-ambitious, always-controversial plan to require automakers to sell electric cars faces a vote this week that, advocates say, would effectively gut the program. Thursday, the state Air Resources Board meets in Sacramento to consider a plan to cut the number of pure electric vehicles that carmakers would be required to sell over the next few years from 25,000 to 2,500. When the state enacted this zero-emission vehicle mandate in 1990, it called for 10 percent of new-vehicle sales from big automakers to be all-electric by 2003, or about 100,000 cars or more a year. That requirement was eventually delayed by several years and reduced to the current level. At the board’s request, the ARB staff revisited the mandate and produced a 52-page proposal that concluded bat

Comment on Where Was Al When the Electric Car Died
No Blaise it is not a lie !!Battery electric vehicles(BEV) are the only available vehicle technology to offer "zero emissions". If the energy required to charge up a BEV is derived from a rooftop photo voltaic arrays then no emissions are created in the process and hence "zero emission".A part from generating zero emissions it also offers the luxury of creating your own energy for free, something that big Oil and Governments don't like :(Even when powering from the grid typically off peak, net emissions are drastically reduced because emissions from internal combustion engines are eliminated and it is easier to reduce emissions at the smoke stack rather than rely on dubious anti pollution equipment on cars.

Comment on Where Was Al When the Electric Car Died
So the electric car is an economically viable vehicle and takes out the many different parts that an internal combustion engine needs. However, to say that it is a "zero-emissions" car is a lie: the greenhouse gas emissions are merely moved from the tail-pipe to the smoke stacks of coal plants. How the country handles this energy problem whether it be the use of wind, solar, or nuclear energy would be an interesting topic. I liked that little clip with the anecdote that Clinton told, and I found it funny that Al Gore was mentioned as well. The suppression of this option really made me sad and slightly suspicious regarding that administration and this program.

The initiative has already raised approximately 200 million dollars from strategic investors. The innovative strategy adopted by the company is to create a business model very much the same as the one used by cellular companies. The company will deploy a vast network of charging stations across countries which will enable it to sell cars cheaply with binding, long term, recharging contracts. This strategy will be complemented by its implementation in small, island like countries such as: Japan, Denmark, Hong Kong and Israel. In my opinion this will be a very interesting initiative, well worth observing. The potential benefits of this initiative are obvious to everyone - reducing green house gas emissions and, of course, reducing global dependency on fossil fuels and the countries that produce them

Perhaps he has shares in the oil companies. I don't know. Also why has there been so much silence regarding the hoarding of suitable NiMH battery intellectual property that was ear marked for the 2nd generation GM EV1 and was subsequently swollen up by an Oil company(Chevron) only to be shelved so that nobody else could use it !!
