      Reaction to local elections...
On the back of last Thursday's Cheshire East elections we thought we'd see what two of the local political figures had to say. Simple as that. Their thoughts......Brian Silvester, leader of the Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council and soon-to-be Mayor, was to the point: "We are delighted with our six gains (4 from Labour) in Crewe and Nantwich. We now have fifteen seats on the new Council from Crewe and Nantwich, compared to Labour, who have just six. The Leader and the Deputy Leader of the Labour Group both failed to be elected to the new Council. Cheshire East will have a Conservative majority of 37. May 1st turned out to be a May Day massacre for the Labour Party." .Steve Hogben, leader of the Crewe and Nantwich Labour party, had this to say: "Despite Tory gloating, Labour is still the bi

      The US Elections--Enough Already!!!
We here at China Doll Publishing are ready for the US elections to get over with. The candidates have been polling for much longer than usual and the debates between the Democratic candidates have become unusually personal and vitriolic. Essentially we need to elect a Democratic President regardless of whether its Hillary or Obama and personally I am not enraptured by either of them but McCain is just Bush lite and God knows we've had enough of Bush and his cronies in the White House. Four more years of Bushy leadership and the entire world will be in a state of turmoil (come to think of it, the world is already in a state of turmoil because of his fractious and unilateral leadership). That is enough of my political observations but unfortunately US politics does impact geopolitical a

Italy’s elections go from bad to worse
It would be comforting to chalk all this up to electronic voting. However, Italians vote by marking a paper ballot with a pencil; the ballots are then counted by hand in front of observers from all parties. And while Berlusconi did have a distinct advantage as the owner of three television networks and several newspapers and periodicals, Italy also has a par condicio law, which guarantees equal time to all political parties, so television viewers heard from everyone from the far left to the far right. The par condicio also prohibits polling in the final 15 days and political rallies or television appearances the day before the elections in a welcome "day of silence." This law may soon become a thing of the past, though. Berlusconi blasted it as "undemocratic" throughout the elec

Winter For Labour and Brown: United Kingdom Local Elections 2008
So far, 104 of 159 councils have declared. It's a bad night for Labour, an okay night for the Lib Dems and a great night for the Tories.Labour have lost 177 councillors, while the Tories have gained 166.They are on 24% of the vote, as opposed to the Tories 44% and Lib Dems 25%.Unfortunately, the British National Party gained 8 councillors.I watched local election coverage on Sky News and BBC One until 1:30. Sky provided lots of interviews at polls around the country, while the BBC had the bloggers in.Labour have blamed the economy and 10p tax rate abolition as reasons why they did badly. It looks like Boris Johnson will become Mayor, and like some floppy-haired Godzlla, will destroy London. Some comfort for Gordon Brown- Nick Robinson doesn't think Labour MP's want a change of leader. There h

Brown's party was running neck-and-neck with the Liberal Democrats, the country's third-largest party.Partial results on Friday from 99 local councils showed the Conservatives gaining 144 seats while Labour lost 145. After 45 minutes of debate, the House tabled the resolution on a vote of 227-95. The resolution's author, Rep. These widespread acts of violence, arbitrary detention and intimidation mirror long-term patterns of abuse designed to suppress political dissent in Ethiopia. “It is too late to salvage these elections, which will simply be a rubber stamp on the EPRDF’s near-monopoly on power at the local level,” said Georgette Gagnon, Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “Still, officials must at least allow the voters to decide how and whether to cast their ballots without int

Spanish General Elections 2008: a prospect of the near future

In general they have not increased their votes apart from that change. This can boost to extraordinary heights the radicalization of a Government, in nearly all issues.Brief prospect for Socialist policy in the next term:Judicial Power: the control over judiciary is going to be increased badly, leading to an accused partiality for the already partial Supreme Court Judges and the members of the General Council of the Judicial Power. Special Elections Rundown
There presently are 6 vacancies in the U.S. House of Representatives, and over the next several weeks special elections will be held to determine who serves out the remainder of those terms. The former incumbent's party has the advantage in each of the races, but only three of the races are considered safe retentions. Here's a quick rundown of the six special elections. CA-12 April 8 open primary, June 3 potential runoff Five candidates are vying to replace the late Tom Lantos in this overwhelmingly Democratic district. Jackie Speier, who was endorsed by Lantos for the general election before he died, is a heavy favorite to succeed him in the special election. Should any candidate receive 50% of the vote in the open primary that candidate will win the election outright, otherwise the

      Us and the American elections
Every 4 four years the Arab world just like the rest of the world begins to follow the American elections , of course we used to follow it only in its final stage not from the primaries like now as the rest of the world. We used to follow the American elections then due to the American role in the region , we used to put our bets on the candidate "whether demarcate or republican" that will be less friendly with Israel and more friendly with us , for years we thought in this  despite the fact all the American presidential candidates are more friendly with Israel then us due to the power of the Jewish lobby in D.C and AIPAC , we knew about the Jewish lobby and its influence still we never gave up. And this is why some think that there is no use to follow up the American P

India waives loans to poor farmers in annual budget ahead of likely elections
India's government announced plans to cancel poor farmers' debts and ease the tax burden on the average Indian, unveiling a budget on Friday that may be the current administration's last before national elections are held.Polls must be held by May 2009 at the latest. But deep disagreements between the Congress party, which leads India's governing coalition, and its communist political allies have led many here to assume an election will take place sooner, possibly later this year. The budget, for the fiscal year beginning April 1, seemed certain to fuel such speculation. It contained a heavy dose of populist measures, including debt relief for millions of farmers and increased spending on employment schemes, education, irrigation projects and insurance packages for poor.Finance Minister P.

Spain: Elections Dominated by Economic Downturn
Spain is set to elect a new government on March 9. After the bursting of the real estate bubble, the economy has witnessed a pronounced slowdown. As a result, economic issues have dominated the campaign. It is still anybody’s guess as to whether the ruling Socialist Party or the opposition Partido Popular will emerge victorious. An interview with Adrian Zürcher, Credit Suisse Global Equity Strategist, about Spain’s economic outlook after the election:

Spanish 2008 Elections Watch: the First Debate
Last Thursday the electoral campaign officialy begun in Spain. And last night it was the first debate between Socialists' candidate, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and PP's candidate, Mariano Rajoy. The first thing I am going to critisize of this debate is that it is only of the two main candidates. I really believe it would be a better idea to see all the candidates together debating. Of course, the PP (center-right) would have lots of critics there as, according to the Tinell Pact, the rest of the parties were to present a common opposition, not against the Government -Zapatero's one- but against the PP, which was in the opposition. But the contrast would have been much interesting between the proposals of all the candidates. What is the problem? That, considering the disenchantment of a

Early poll results have shown that the anti-Musharraf parties, Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League (N), are emerging as victorious. The early results also show that Pakistan Muslim League (Q), the party supporting Pervez Musharraf, has been defeated.Furthermore, the results for Pakistan's national assembly indicate that the Pakistan Peoples Party currently have a small lead with 78 seats, with Nawaz Sharif's party just behind with 72 seats. The party which wins the elections for the National Assembly will choose the Prime Minister of Pakistan. The elections had a slow start at 8 a.m. (0300 GMT), as fears of violence kept many voters away. To enforce security, the Pakistani police is backed up by some 80,000 troops. The BBC reported that 80 million people are eligible to vote,

      Writing About the Elections
So you want to improve your writing skills? Great. The most important thing you can do to improve your writing skills has nothing to do with actually writing. It is about picking a topic to write about. The problem with most students' writing is not necessarily that they cannot write but rather, that what they are required to write about is often of little interest to them. Therefore, remember that the next time you receive a research assignment or have to write for a test or some other academic or professional purpose, pick a topic that is of some interest to you. Even if the subject itself might seem boring, such as social health or something equally bland, consider the subject for a moment and find some aspect of it that is interesting and RELEVANT to your own life. The importance o

      2008 US Primary Elections
I was able to make this primary map in a few hours (a how-to is coming soon) and I wanted to share it. Sure it's not quite as pretty as the Time or Newsweek versions but I think it does a decent job of capturing the appropriate look and feel. I'm also sure it took them a LOOONG time to put their maps together whereas mine was a relatively quick solution using SmartDraw and MapsAlive. You can use your mouse to drag the map around within the bordered area. Unfortunately, the map is wider than the column that I posted it in. [Ed: fixed]  Be sure to check back here since I'll be updating this map as results come in. What other information would be useful besides the winner? How could I make this map better? Email this | Add to del.icio.us | Digg this! | Share on Facebook | S
