The American Senate is vaguely similar to the House of Lords. In this regard it is the second chamber of a bicameral governing institution. The Americans have a congress, the British have a parliament. One thing that appears to unite the US Senate and the House of Lords is the extreme age of many of the members. It used to be said that the Lords were in God's waiting room. Now there are murmurings on Capitol Hill about the age and competence of some senators.Robert Byrd is a senator from West Virginia. He was born just as the First World War ended. It makes him 90. Some think being as old as that is not the best thing for a senator to be. Others think it an outright impudence that the subject is mentioned. Yesterday (Wednesday) he was managing a two-hour Senate Appropriations Committee hea

By Tameka Lundy:
Nassau, Bahamas:
Enthusiasm has waned for the Petrocaribe initiative, proposed by Venezuela as a mechanism under which Caribbean nations would access oil at a cut rate, State Minister for Finance Zhivargo Laing has asserted.
The current Free National Movement Government has, for now, chosen not to endorse the measure.
The high cost of oil, which has dogged Caribbean nationals left to reap the repercussions of external factors that are contributing to the steep increases, is a matter that is occupying the attention of CARICOM officials as they meet here this week.
Those officials are also discussing the wider cost of living issue.
"All of us have to concede that we in the region are really price takers when it comes to the cost o

The late baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn, former Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley, managers Dick Williams and Billy Southworth and ex-Pittsburgh Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss were also inducted. Kun was the first commissioner elected since the late Happy Chandler in 1982. MLB attendance tripled under Kuhn's watch, from 1969-1984; He also presided over the introduction of night games to the World Series and baseball's baby steps into national marketing. But baseball changed in ways that Kuhn resisted - free agency, salary arbitration and dozen of other benefits that Marvin Miller won for the players. O'Malley moved the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles after the 1957 season - a baseball version of the California Gold Rush which helped open up the West Coast to the game. I don't understand George W. Bush.I mean I do, but I don't.He comes out today to take shots at the unpopular Congress, but did he deliver a death blow, or did he resuscitate life into Congress.Bush says Congress is wasting it's time investigating his administration. American people overwhelmingly want investigations of his administration, even his own impeachment. The American people are angry at Congress for what they perceive is lack of accountability from the Democratic Congress. If Bush is upset over investigations, then I guess the Democratic Congress is holding him accountable after all.Bush complains Congress is wasting it's time passing a SCHIP bill he's only going to veto and the House will only fail to override, but, the American people like this bill and want the Democratic Congress to pass it despite what Bush says. If Bush is upset, that means Congress is doing what the people want...forcing him to accept the SCHIP reauthorization.Simply put, Congress is not unpopular
As a resident of Atlanta and a big Stephen Colbert fan, I feel a little conflicted here:
Look out Georgia.
Stephen Colbert brought his fanciful presidential campaign to the campus of the University of South Carolina on Sunday, telling several hundred sign-waving fans that he’ll take care of the rival state to the south.
“I promise, if elected, I will crush the state of Georgia,” the 43-year-old actor-comedian said to the cheering crowd.
He also went on to compare the fruit offerings of both states:

Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, the wife of Argentina’s president, Néstor Kirchner, has become the first woman to be elected President in Argentina’s history.
Mrs. Kirchner, 54, the center-left Peronist party candidate and a senator, defeated a fractured opposition and avoided a runoff.
With 96 percent of the voting locations reporting, Mrs. Kirchner had 45 percent, ahead of Elisa Carrio, a center-left congresswoman, who had 23 percent, and Roberto Lavagna, a former finance minister, who had 17 percent, according to ministry of interior figures.
Mrs. Kirchner declared victory late Sunday. In a speech, she said she felt a responsibility not only to lead her country, but “an immense responsibility for my gender.” She also paid homage to her husband’s accomplishments.

Presidential Candidate
October 17, 2007 | Issue 43•42My fellow Americans, in the coming presidential election, the voters
of this nation will plot a course for the future. There are many
candidates, each of whom brings a different vision of that future. But
only one has the conviction and strength to lead this great country.
Only one is a popular television and film actor ready to face the
challenges of the 21st century head-on. And, most importantly, there is
only one candidate with a bombshell trophy wife nearly a
quarter-century younger than himself.
I urge each and every one of you to run a Google image search and

FDL blogger looseheadprop is reporting that Hillary Clinton pledged to end the war in Iraq as soon as she was elected at a recent meeting of Eleanor Roosevelt’s Legacy Committee assuming that the message wasn't misinterpreted this would be a major shift in her platform. One that could cost her the votes of hawkish liberals and moderates. Might this change (or perceived flip flop) be the chink in her armor? We'll see if this report proves to be true. In the meantime I've contacted the Clinton campaign for verification.
Vietnam, along with Libya and Burkina Faso, was elected to non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the years 2008-09 on Tuesday.
The three countries were unopposed and obtained the required two-thirds majority of votes in favor from the 192-member U.N. General Assembly.Winners will take seats on the 15-member council on Jan. 1 for a two-year period. Nonpermanent members have no veto. But human rights groups that call Libya and Vietnam undemocratic have already expressed dismay at the prospect of them sitting on the council, which can dispatch peacekeeping forces or impose sanctions.source

German Bundesliga players elected Diego as their player of the year for 2006-07 by a wide margin. The Brazilian got nearly a third of all votes (31.4%), followed by Stuttgart's Mario Gomez (12.2%), Leverkusen teammates Bernd Schneider and Theofanis Gekas (10.72% and 9.5%, respectively) and Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (a Ralph Nader-esque 3.8%). I wonder what Rafael van der Vaart, Torsten Frings and Mohamed Zidan--to name just three examples--did to their colleagues to get excluded from the list. You're telling me they weren't as good as Neuer last season? Then you have guys like Philipp Lahm, who is actually on FIFA's shortlist for player of the year, a nomination Bundesliga players obviously don't agree with. Whatever, these things are stupid anyway. Still, I do think it's telling that Diego (rightfully) gets this much respect in Germany. What Brazil's national team coach Dunga has against him is a mystery. I can't help but think that Brazil would have done a bit better in
Received via email CHANCE OF INCREASED TAXES IF HILLARY CLINTON IS ELECTEDBy DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANNPublished on FoxNews.com on October 11, 2007.Hillary Clinton would raise taxes if she is elected president. Sharply. As her candidacy gains momentum and she closes in on the Democratic nomination, it would be well to review the record and underscore the tax increases she would be likely to enact. As always, Hillary speaks in code. So heres the code book. She says that she will let President Bush's tax cuts for top earners expire." Most people assume that this pledge means that she will raise the top bracket (for those earning more than $200,000 a year) on income taxes from the 35 percent to which Bush cut it, to the 39.6 percent to which her husband raised it in 1993. But, in reality, it means a whole lot more.It also likely means increasing the tax on capital gains from the current 15 percent to at least 20 percent and probably to the 30 percent level backed by most l
The rope-strong, luminous follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2004 debut, "Me First". Recorded while singer/songwriter Blake Sennett was on tour with his other band, Rilo Kiley, the album is propelled by the kind of unsettled, exploratory impetus that's only native to the American open road. While portions of the album were recorded in studios, Sennett recorded and produced the majority of his creations in environments he was passing through. The dichotomy between feeling completely at home and at the same time homeless on the road fuels Sennett's biting, reflective lyricism and grand, sweeping compositions.Even when on sabbatical from his "other" band Rilo Kiley, guitarist Blake Sennett keeps a great distance from stagnation. In a record driven by elongated performances and an unending interstate (and recorded in various locales along the journey), this Sennett-fronted foursome mirrors its highly commended debut Me First with another mix of razor-sharp and patently droll songs
This is the new project from Blake Sennett, co-singer/songwriter of Rilo Kiley. "Me First" includes the help of Mike Mogis (Saddle Creek Records partner and producer extraordinaire), Jimmy Tamborello (Postal Service, Dntel), Jason Boesel (Rilo Kiley), Daniel Brummel (Ozma), Orinda Fink (Azure Ray), Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley, Postal Service), Schmed (Arlo), and many others. It incorporates everything from lap steel to melodic, glitchy electronics. A compelling, cinematic framework for Sennett's exemplary songwriting. "An exquisitely sad album of country-tinged dream pop..."
From Byron York:Sen. Barack Obama’s closest political adviser, David Axelrod, wants you to know that Obama did not say what he appeared to say at Monday night’s Democratic debate here in Charleston. A questioner, speaking via debate sponsor YouTube, asked whether, in the spirit of “bold leadership,” the candidates would “meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration…with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries.” Obama had a ready answer.“I would,” he said without hesitation. “And the reason is that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them — which has been the guiding principle of this administration — is ridiculous. Ronald Reagan and Democratic presidents like JFK constantly spoke to the Soviet Union at a time when Ronald Reagan called them an evil empire. And the reason is because they understood that we may not trust t
