A STATEMENT FROM REV. ELDER KEN MARTIN OF MCC
The following is an email sent out by Rev. Elder Ken Martin of the Metropolitan Community Churches. It is essential reading for all Christians, as it hammers home the point that to attend any church, regardless of how "Gay friendly" it is, that is affiliated with any denomination that in any way discriminates against LGBT people, gives undeserved credibility to that denomination. As you know, it's my firm belief that any Christian, Gay or Straight, who attends any church that in any way excludes any of God's children, is not only lending undeserved credibility to that church and its clergy person, but is involved in a situation that is toxic to one's spiritual life, and is committing a sin sufficient to be an extraordinary offense against God and against the Gospel of Christ! The following

      Pieter Brueghel The Elder
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569) was a great Flemish painter of the XVI century. He is supposed to have been born in Broghel, near Breda (Netherlands). He was an apprentice of Pieter Coecke, and married his daughter. He had 2 sons with her, that also were painters: Jan Bruegel and Pieter Bruegel. For distinguishing between the father and the son, the father has been called Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and the son Pieter Bruegel the Younger.Bruegel is often compared with Hieronymus Bosch. In both painters, fantastic elements exist, and a reference to death. The artworks of both painters are full of small secrets, and scenes full by people. These are not paintings that can be just given a glance. They are that kind of artworks that can delight us, while discovering new details on and on.Pur

      Massachusetts Elder Abuse
The number of elderly residents being abused or neglected is on the rise in Massachusetts, and advocates for the elderly say the state is not properly funding a program that was designed to protect vulnerable seniors.Elder service agencies northwest of Boston say they do not have enough money to run the state-sanctioned protective services program, so they are forced to pull funds from other important programs. As state officials work on next year's budget, advocates for seniors are putting on a full-court press to draw attention to the problem. The protective services program responds to reports of elders in situations that include physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, neglect by a caregiver in the home, self-neglect, and financial exploitation. In fiscal year 2005, the state received 11,5

The Future of Elder Care, Part I
As my parents, friends and I myself age, I've been doing a great deal of thinking about the state of elder care in this country. The nursing home industry has indeed changed over the last few years, with the lion's share of changes having to do with offering specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care, assisted living, and palliative care for those in need. More and more long-term care facilities appear to be offering services which allow residents to move along a continuum from independent living to complete care, based upon an individual's changing needs. This is a welcome change, but there is so much more that can be done. With the Baby Boom generation beginning to retire, I predict that the care of the elderly will be an enormous field with unlimited growth and employment potential over

In 2006, the Entertainment Software Rating Board changed the rating of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion from Teen (13+) to Mature (17+), citing "more detailed depictions of blood and gore" than had been previously considered, and "the presence in the PC version of the game of a locked-out art file that, if accessed by using an apparently unauthorized third party tool,"—the Oblivion Topless Mod—"allows the user to play the game with topless versions of female characters." In response to the new content, the ESRB conducted a new review of Oblivion, showing to its reviewers the content originally submitted by the game's publisher along with the newly disclosed content. The new review resulted in an M rating. The ESRB reported that Bethesda Soft

Secondly, well done for persuading his wife, Nicole to let him do it – they were on their second honeymoon and he had to start by getting permission, then he had to try and fit in the diving around all the fishing, kayaking and waterfall trips they were doing. Good work Shane. It was a really fun course, the highlight probably being on his naturalist dive when a manta ray nearly flew into his head. Shane was trying to work out what I was pointing at/looking at/screaming about, when he turned and saw a 4m manta about 2 feet in front of him. Stop Elder Abuse
Due to my recent constant care of my grandfather, I have spent many days, hours, weeks, in nursing homes, hospitals, in the company of aides, doctors, and nurses. Many thoughts have come to mind. As a young, strong, aware individual, you often have the independence, awareness and physical strength to avoid, fight or just be aware when you being mistreated. Even if you choose not to fight back, you could. One of the most deplorable features of abuse is that cowardly individuals who inherently feel inadequate, gain power and strength from lording over easy targets (i.e., children, subordinates, elderly, animals). In the case of the elderly, those who have either been abused, or for whatever reason, have evil within and a need to belittle those in need, choose to verbally or physically maltreat someone of advanced age. If you step into a nursing home, you will see elderly men and women of all levels of health. There are individuals of fine physical shape, with failing mental facilities an

The Story of Elder Abuse that Needs to be Told !
In this era of preposterous house prices, a lot of older people are sitting in goldmines. Never mind that these goldmines are their homes, have been their homes often for decades. And their greedy, evil, ungrateful offspring all too often are ushering their parents out of their homes and into institutions solely in order to get their greedy mitts on the goldmines left behind. Old people are often vulnerable. Their children are often their only lifeline. Like abused children, they feel conflicted loyalties to the very people abusing them. Abuse of elders is sometimes physical, but more often it's emotional neglect coupled with financial exploitation. That's why elder abuse so rarely is reported. But in order to get away with these daylight robberies, the scum who abuse their elderly relatives require the assistance of professionals like attorneys, bankers and solicitors, who all too often know exactly what is going on, but are happy to be complicit in order to pocket their own fees. This

Elder 92 year Old Starved to Death After Paying Rent and Losing his Savings to Elder Financial Abuse
BY ERIN L. NISSLEY Staff Writer The Times Tribune - PA, USAThe 92-year-old had been paying $300 a month for a room and care from Helen and Walter Pestinikas. Instead, the couple starved Mr. Kly to death, keeping his family from him while they drained more than $30,000 from his bank account. When the couple, who operated a funeral home on North Main Avenue, were charged with third-degree murder in Mr. Kly’s death, they argued that they had no obligation to care for him. Prosecutors argued that they did, because they had a contract to do so.The Pestinikases’ convictions in February 1987 was precedent-setting — it was the first time anyone had been convicted of murder for failing to live up to the terms of a care contract, according to then-District Attorney Ernie Preate Jr.Appellate courts struggled with the issue of whether the Pestinikases had a legal obligation to Mr. Kly. As the couple’s conviction was overturned by the state Superior Court and reinstated by the same court in

Senator Kohl Aims to Fight Elder Abuse
With the number of elder abuse cases on the rise, Wisconsin Senator Herb Kohl is taking action. Senator Kohl made a stop in La Crosse today, renewing his call for a nationwide system of background checks aimed at preventing elder abuse. Wisconsin is currently part of a seven-state pilot program responsible for doing background checks on applicants to senior care facilities. Kohl hopes taking the program to national level will prevent elder abuse nationwide, and strengthen the current efforts in Wisconsin.Last year in Wisconsin alone almost ten thousand applicants were screened before they were hired by long-term care facilities, two hundred sixty-five of those applicants were denied because of a history of neglect or abuse. "During the pilot program over the last three years, in 7 states, 5000 people were identified as people we didn't want to employ, and would have otherwise been employed. I think that demonstrated the need for a national registry," Kohl says. By offering the program

Will this be the New Sport of The Future "Elder Figthing"
Mobile phone footage shot at a privately-run care home shows frail and elderly residents being goaded into shouting foul-mouthed obscenities at each other. The three-minute video appears to show a woman trying to incite a confrontation between a confused woman and a male resident in the lounge of the home. She repeatedly persuades the bewildered pensioners to trade offensive vulgarities. At one point, the fearful victim of the abuse pleads with her laughing tormentor, saying: "He will come after me", while a second resident tells the woman she is "making bother", but she then turns her attention to the male resident, trying to persuade him to retaliate."This is an example of elder abuse, and elder abuse destroys lives. But it's still a hidden issue and we just don't know how much goes on.

      Elder Justice "Gone Awfully Wrong!"
Florence, Alabama Elizabeth S. HillI read recently that in 2006 there were almost 500,000 cases of elder abuse reported in domestic settings. If there were this many cases in homes, how many cases were in institutions, and how many abuses were not reported? It's frightening to even think about it.In the past few years I have become aware of the lack of love and the excess of greed when an old person has Alzheimer's or some other debilitating disease, and can be manipulated.I witnessed a case when a friend with Alzheimer's had every legal document he had carefully made when he was well reversed and changed during the last six months of his life. They were changed so that people whom he had not intended to benefit were benefitted from his legacy. There was no one with legal or medical authority who would help him, or who could help him.Congress needs our encouragement to pass the Elder Justice Act (HR 1783).All we have to do is call 1-800-928-8084 and say the we want help for the elder

Elder Care: The Way We Were
Have you heard stories of "the old days"? You know, back when family members all lived together? Generation after generation? If you were lucky you heard these history lessons from grandparents or great-grandparents.There was the "homestead". Babies were born there. The midwife may have been a neighbor or the mother-in-law.The many children grew up with parents, grandparents and siblings. The grandparents died. The children married. Maybe they built their own home close by or simply moved their bride or groom into the "family home". The parents became the grandparents and the circle of life continued. So help me Hannah, but things have surely changed! The biggest difference is life expectancy. The circle of life has beaten a new path to our door.In the "old days" there were always family to take care of each other. Now, family members may be scattered across the globe.Words our great-grandparents never heard of are elder care, assisted living, nursing homes, long term health care and baby

Long-Term Elder Care Takes a Toll on Family
Q:After my mother-in-law suffered a stroke nearly two years ago, my wife and I have cared for her mother at home with us. When we saw that we could not handle this part-time and could not get my wife's siblings to help, my wife stopped working to stay at home with her full-time. This meant her losing the ability to retire early. Of late, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with dementia, and we just can't do it any longer. We tried to find a facility that would admit her, but because she only has $1,500 to her name and $720 per month in Social Security, the nursing homes tell us that there is an 18-month wait for a "Medicaid bed," and that they can't take her unless my wife and I guarantee to pay for her care at more than $5,500 monthly. We tried to discuss splitting the costs with her brother and sister, but they are not interested, and my wife and I simply can't afford to assume this cost. We are at our wit's end. Elder Abuse: Nursing Home Neglect Is a Widespread Problem
Editor: Clayton W. Kent Firm: Brayton Purcell LLPA nursing home is guilty of neglect when it fails to fulfill its duties to its residents. These obligations can range from providing special diets to taking a frail, elderly person to the toilet at appropriate times. Refusing to answer a resident's page or failing to call his or her doctor may also be neglect. A bedridden nursing home resident should be repositioned at least every two hours to relieve body pressure. Without this care, the resident may develop inflamed, reddened skin or bedsores (also called pressure sores or decubitus ulcers). If a bedsore is not treated, skin tissue breaks down and a large wound is formed.Bedsores are often signs that the nursing home is neglecting residents' nutritional and hygiene needs. Skin breakdown can occur when a resident becomes incontinent and urine and feces are not cleaned up promptly. Improper nutrition may also affect the skin, inhibiting healing.Poor nutrition and dehydration may cause
