I feel like I am listening to Private Frazer this morning. We’re not doomed and it is not the end of the World. Seriously Chaps (and Chapesses), it isn’t. We failed, yes and the match was a rerun of most of the others at The Emirates, a well organised defence that still allowed opportunities to be spurned, opponents who had few chances but came away with a draw, collective scratching of the heads wondering how we did not win that game. Except this time, the draw was exceptionally costly, no chance to put it right next week or in three days time. The disappointment of exiting two Cups in a fortnight is tangible for both players and supporters, especially with hopes for a good run in this competition raised after the defeats to Chelsea and Blackburn, some feeling that the Season would be over if progress were halted last night. Well, what can we expect from PSV? Not a lot really in short. Every man and his dog will know precisely what Mr. Koeman’s game plan is going to be: sit back, defend our lead and perhaps try and poach a(nother) goal on the break. So its here; the game that many would have you believe is the one upon which the season rests. Frankly, that is complete crap. This season is all about improving upon last and so far all the indicators are that it is shaping up to do so. Losing Semi-Finalists in the Carling Cup in 2005 - 06, runners-up this year - improvement? Check. FA Cup Fourth Round last time, Fifth this time out - improvement? Check. Fourth place in the Premiership last season, same this time but third is well within the squads grasp. Runners - up in 2005 - 06 Champions League; the only improvement can be winning it. Possible but one hell of a tall order. Getting to the Final would be an achievement in itself. If you do not believe me, look at the tame surrender that Barcelona have made of their trophy this time around to give you an indication of the nature of the beast.

To say that last nights performance was dissapointing is self evident, on the other hand to say it was predictable is also stating the obvious a bit. While we were unbeaten in the calendar year we haven’t been playing well, have been consistently conceding the first goal and eventually it was going to catch up with us. The only good thing to come out of the game is that although we lost we are really only at half time.
I’m not going to go into the nitty gritty of the performance because due to circumstance I was not paying full attention. However what was clear to me was the defence were solid enough, the midfield didn’t spark and yet again the forwards couldn’t make an impact. The midfield do have to take some blame for the lack of creativity but Arsenal under Wenger are a side that relies on the midfield to get forward and finish chances and similarly rely on the forwards to get involved in the midfield play. So some good news first of all, we have another home draw in the FA Cup if we manage to overcome Blackburn in the replayed game at Ewood Park at the end of the month. If the result goes our way Manchester City will finally get an opportunity to visit the Emirates on the 10th/11th March. A lot has been said about Blackburn’s tactics at the weekend and negative as they were it was our lackadaisical approach that cost us. Fingers crossed Wenger will instil a greater sense of urgency in Eindhoven.
