      Fun Fact Friday, The Eighth
-”Eighth” is a really hard word to type properly when you’re typing fast. Apparently, so is “typing.” -We get phone calls several times a day from “Ontario” and “Minnesota,” always at nap, supper or bed time. We, of course, don’t ever answer but that doesn’t stop us from getting really, really pissed off. [...]

      Happy eighth birthday, Readerville!
I love book forums. I love message boards that contain book folders or book threads. Because I spend so much of my day online, the opportunity to refresh a page and see brand new book recommendations or a wild frenzy of punning or an ongoing intelligent conversation has provided a dependable, nourishing break as I go about my work. Book bloggers don't post near often enough for my quotidian habits

Eighth Graders Suspended For Not Standing For Pledge of Allegiance
At Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Junior High School in northwestern Minnesota, three eighth grade students were suspended by their principal for not standing during the Pledge of Allegiance. Although students can choose not to recite the pledge, they are required to stand for it.It seems indicative of the school system to always punish those who don't conform. It starts getting dangerous when a certain behavior is required of someone that should be an individual's choice.Of course, some of the more insecure people in our country will be offended that these teenagers didn't properly show their patriotism for this country. Personally, I think patriotism is demonstrated by your actions and not reciting pledges, singing anthems or hanging American flags up. Those things are really easy to do and do

      Eighth night of Hanukkah
When my siblings and I were kids, my mom always varied the way we got our Hanukkah and/or Christmas presents. Sometimes there was a big pile, and every night we got to take something off the pile -- or there was a bag that we weren't allowed to look inside, and we had to reach in and grab something. Other times, she had what we would get for each night mapped out, and the presents were all hidden away out of sight -- and each night she would hand us the gift that she wanted us to open. Sometimes the big gifts were for Hanukkah, sometimes they were for Christmas; some years there was more than one major present, sometimes the major present was something that we had to share; and sometimes the biggest and best present came in the tiniest of boxes. The only things we knew with certainty were that there would be a tangelo in our stockings on Christmas morning, and that at least one of the gifts would be something VERY SPECIAL. Tonight, I got my special present. I was a little bit bum

Porto Powers On For Eighth Straight League Win
FC Porto made quick work of Leixoes in Portugal's bwin liga today, winning 3-0 for its eighth win in as many games. The world's eighth-best club, as judged by Soccer Source's current rankings, has yet to play second-placed Benfica or fourth-placed Guimares, but earlier this season won at third-placed Sporting and against Maritomo, currently fifth in the bwin. In fact, the Dragons are unbeaten in all competition this year, though they have been tied twice in the UEFA Champions League, most recently at Olympique Marseille last week. They may face their toughest task Nov. 28 when they travel to Anfield.Porto is a storied club with a long history and definitely have one of the cooler shields I've seen (above). They were founded in the 1890s by a wine merchant (I'm not making this up, I got it from the club's official English-language Web site) and have won 22 Portuguese league championships, including four of the last five. In the 1990s, they only captured eight of 10 titles. Not a b

      Eighth Grade Man
It’s occurred to me that a buddy of mine here has been reverting to or has fully reverted to junior high status. I’m actually a bit worried about this. I know the cat is young, a good couple years younger than my brother, and he was not alive during the peak of the Michael Jackson / Thriller era, which I have memories of. Still, this could happen to you too. Lets look at warning signs that your buddy may also be stuck in eighth grade-1) He is “dating” a girl that he has never kissed.2) He ditches his drinking buddies to stay home and talk on the phone to said girl (again, that he has never kissed.)3) When he does go out drinking, he is guaranteed to get a call from said girl and to be on the phone for at least 20 minutes.4) When he is hanging out with friends and not on the phone from said girl, he is texting her every 14 seconds. By the way, I don’t get this new-fangled “texting” thing. I use the text messages, more so here because I have a ghetto pre-paid phone an

“And On the Eighth Day God Did….What?”
God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. Genesis 1:31 -Genesis 2: 3 I think we’re all pretty familiar with the creation story in Genesis; many of us know it by heart. When reading it again yesterday it dawned on me for the first time that there is no mention of an eighth day. I know this may sound silly, but why not? The seventh day is presented as a day in which God rested from his work. This past Sunday Matthew, my pastor, asked if we really knew what this meant. Was God really taking a rest? Was he tired from all the energy spent during the last 6 days cooking up the universe? Perhaps he was recharging his ba

Who doesn’t love a little Sesame Street?? That’s right, the show is entering its thirty-eighth season today, including stars such as Tina Fey, Chris Brown, Brian Williams and more: Sesame Street remains (thankfully) true to its roots. Sure, there have been a few tweaks necessitated by changing times: You might notice that the famous theme song (”Come and play…”) has been given hip-hop and jazzy under-rhythms. But the show’s core mission — introducing (and making familiar) to children the educational building blocks of letters, words, and numbers — is alive and well, accomplished in a way that never talks down to children and still manages to amuse their parents. Eighth of the eighth
A bit of numerological nonsense from China. It wouldn't be so bad if so many people didn't take it so seriously: More than 3,000 couples tied the knot exactly a year before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, hoping some of the auspicious "eighth of the eighth" luck would rub off on them as the city started its Games countdown. According to city government figures, 3,390 couples registered their marriages with local justices on Wednesday, which was the start of autumn in the lunar calendar and already considered an ideal date for marriage. ... The Games will start at 8:00 pm on the eighth day of the eighth month, an auspicious date and time. In Cantonese, "eight" (baat) is considered lucky as it sounds like the word for wealth and fortune (faat). A line 500 metres (yards) long circled a district court at 8 a.m., the Beijing News said. One couple said they had been waiting since 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Source: "Thousands of Beijing couples go for Olympic gold," Reuters, August 9, 2007 Technorati

Eighth Harry Potter Book Out Soon!
It seems that JK Ruo Ling just can’t bear to say goodbye to the boy wizard. She has revealed in an exclusive interview with CCTV in Beijing that the 8th book (yes, this WILL be the final one!) will be called …. hold your breath …. Harry Potter And The Filler Of Big. I can’t read Chinese characters but I gather from the pictures on this blog that Harry gets sick of fighting bad wizards and demons and instead, engages in an epic battle with a triceratop, gets miniaturized and fights with the ant character from A Bug’s Life and escapes the wrath of a cartoon vulture. Oh, and it seems that Harry is also sick of the drab, black robes he’s sported for the last 7 books and has instead chosen to wear something resembling a rebellious Japanese anime character. Complete with sunglasses. Read this post for more exclusive pictures of the 8th Harry Potter book! [Link] via Boing Boing

In Etown: Should third-graders share a building with eighth-graders?
ELIZABETHTOWN — An Elizabethtown Independent Schools committee has turned in its report about a possible restructuring of the district’s schools, but it probably will be awhile before it receives a grade......The district is contemplating using a “school centers” approach in its schools’ grade configurations. Along with a planned building for preschool and kindergarteners, a possible “center” approach would place first- and second-graders in the Helmwood Heights Elementary building, and third- through eighth-graders on the Morningside Elementary/T.K. Stone Middle schools campus.Elizabethtown High School’s structure would remain the same. This is one variation on the center model other districts have used.No matter how schools are configured, the preschool and kindergarten center already is in EIS’ facility plan, which lays out all potential plans for construction and renovation in the district...This from the News-Enterprise.

Henry The Eighth To Speak Out
The backlash has begun. No sooner have Manchester United spent £50m on three players (if reports are to be believed) than the comments start about how we will finish twenty points behind them again, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham ahead of us as well. There is a belief that this is down to the Board being unwilling to invest ‘big’ money in players yet there is no evidence that Arsene wants to spend big. All we have to go on is the hugely unreliable speculation of the media frenzy, fed by supporters desires to see ‘names’ at the club, Mr 15%’s trying to talk up their clients chances of a money-spinning transfer to the Pot of Gold or in a large number of cases, wild misinterpretations of players comments, the speculation increased in direct proportion to the number of Magners sunk. Boston Red Sox starter Josh Beckett coming off the disabled list, picked right up where he left off winning his eighth game in a row, as Boston defeated the Cleveland Indians Tuesday night by a 4-2 margin. Beckett, went seven innings allowing only three hits in his return. Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a RBI double and a homer. Youkilis has multiple hits in nine consecutive games the most for a Red Sox player since Jim Rice in 1978. Jeremy Sowers saw his record go to 1-5 as he took the loss for the Tribe. He had his only victory of the season in his last start, and is probably a good candidate to be sent down to Triple A Buffalo after Jake Westbrooki returns from the DL. Something No Eighth Grader Is Supposed to Know
Coffeekid: "You know that song, Mama Mia?"Me: "Yep."Coffeekid: "Today in music class the teacher put that cd on while we worked. I knew like, seven songs on that stupid thing. I couldn't help but start to sing along with it when it was on. I knew all the words"Me: "That's cool. But really... none of the other kids knew those songs?"Coffeekid: "No. Not even the teacher knew all the words. The kids couldn't believe I knew them and they asked me how I knew it... I said 'my mom'."Me: "See? Having a vast knowledge of many different songs serves you well in life!"Coffeekid: "Mom! No. You are missing the point. Knowing all the words to Mama Mia does not serve a kid well in eighth grade!"

M.H. Kim wins eighth LPGA title
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Needing only to make a 5-foot putt on No. 18 to win the SemGroup Championship on Sunday, Mi Hyun Kim pushed it right of the hole. But she received a quick chance for redemption, and took advantage of it. Kim, forced into a playoff with Hall of Famer Juli Inkster because of the miss, won on the first extra hole — making a 4-foot par putt on No. 18 — for her first LPGA Tour victory of the year. Kim, who started the round one shot behind the leaders, more…

steven weber, of studio 60 and wings, had some very spot-on comments about the current state of historical epics and the whole "who needs accuracy when we can look sexy" trend in historical tv and film, and he nicely ties it in to how we ended up with the bush administration. here's his great essay:Sexy, lanky, pouty Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays the sexy, lanky, pouty Henry the Eighth in the Showtime miniseries The Tudors. Not since Jennifer Love Hewitt's stunningly miscast but awesomely stacked portrayal of Audrey Hepburn has the grand gilt of history been roto-stripped and papered over with a new and improved veneer purchased in aisle 6 in a West Hollywood TargetIf The Tudors does what Showtime wants it to do, then we are certain to see an increase in production of quasi-historical epics featuring dumbed-down, beefed-up and tricked-out versions of their non-fictional inspirations. Already, the history-cum-video game 300 has whipped the box office into a steroid rage with its beefcak

Headline Animator Overhaul, Part Three and One-Eighth
Faithful readers are most likely aware of the minutiae that concern us here at FeedBurner inter-agency headquarters, especially when it comes to new features and notable drama such as "We're running low on decaf and 2% milk. OMG!" Today's enhancement to Headline Animator, the FeedBurner service engaged in a renovation comparable to the Dan Ryan expressway reconstruction project (minus the many reflector barrels), is all about expanding the reach of your content and making things look how you want them to look. Place Your Content in More Places, Easily It has been suggested by considerably more than seven of you that we should offer new capabilities to help grow your audience, and that's exactly what we're committed to doing with Headline Animator. It now features step-by-step instructions for placing your content on your MySpace page, a TypePad, Blogger or WordPress.com blog, a bunch of email programs, and "Other," a category we reserve for those interesting places whose names a

Part II of The Eighth Day Completed
Sections 4 & 5 were added to Chapter 9 of The Eighth Day. This concludes Part II of three. These last two sections total 26 pages, and I wrote them in eight days — not too shabby, I think. Hopefully, I can keep this pace up until I’m finished; I can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel. The first two parts are roughly 30,000 words each, or 120 pages. With any luck, the third and final part will turn out to be about the same length, which will result in a 360 page novel. At my current pace, I will finish around mid-May. Of course, Shawn Jaffe is a slippery devil, so who knows. He may drag things out longer than I expect. Now, on to the administrative details. I’ve added a link to download the Firefox web browser to the front page of my website. It is, in my opinion, the best web browser out there. If you’re still using Internet Explorer, you’re missing out. Although I’ve tried to make it compatible with all browsers, my webpa

Black cab fares go up for eighth time under Ken
Black cabs fares are set to increase again Taxi fares are set to rise again, taking the average cost of hailing a black cab above £10.50. Journey prices will increase by 3.2 per cent on 14 April, the eighth time they have gone up since Ken Livingstone became mayor seven years ago. This means a typical fare - averaged out across day, night and weekend rates - will jump 32p from £10.25 to £10.57. Passengers travelling between 10pm and 6am - when the fares are most expensive - can expect to pay just under £13, up about 40p on the current £12.57 night-time average. Cab fares are reviewed annually by Transport for London. The intention is to maintain the earnings - in line with cost of living inflation - of the capital's 24,678 cabbies once the cost of running a car is taken into account. The minimum fare remains at £2.20, which includes a 20p environmental charge, which was introduced three years ago to encourage drivers to modernise their vehi

The Beginning of Chapter 9 Added to the Eighth Day
Sections 1 through 4 of Chapter 9 were added to The Eighth Day.  That’s 4,414 words worth, or about 18 more pages.  Enjoy!  For anyone who is interested, here is my daily word count since January 27th — my way of holding myself accountable. It has worked well for me so far, and I highly recommend it to any author struggling to keep a steady word count going. Note that 250 words is approximately equal to one page in a novel. January 27th - 464 words January 28th - 334 words January 29th - 1,203 words January 30th - 434 words January 31th - 310 words February 1st - 161 words February 2nd to February 7th - 0  words (Stephanie recovers from septoplasty) February 8th - 373 words February 9th - 0 words (my attempt at installing 64-bit Windows Vista resulted in a phone call to technical support that lasted four … yes, that’s right … four hours) February 10th - 141 words February 11th - 209 words February 12t

Eighth century Hindu temple relics lost in Semarang
Many 8th century historical relics from Hindu temples in Central Java have been lost, and are believed to be in the hands of private antique collectors.Villager Sukirman, a native of Sidomulyo village in Central Java's Semarang regency, said that during the 1980s many people came to the area to buy temple ruins or carved stones from residents."We didn't know why they bought them. They only said the objects would be handed over to the museum," said Sukirman, 68.

Chapter 8 of The Eighth Day Completed
Sections 5 & 6 added to Chapter 8 of The Eighth Day. This concludes the chapter. Additionally, due to some formatting errors caused by cutting and pasting a Microsoft Word document into Microsoft Expression, I need to correct some formatting with The Eighth Day. Chapter 8 is already complete. I will update the rest of the chapters over the course of the next week, starting from the beginning and working forward.

      Inspiration for the Eighth Day
Several years ago, my wife, Stephanie, and I spent the day at Disney World. I hadn’t been there since I was a kid, and the only thing I remember about it was finding a dead jellyfish on the beach with my grandpa. Oh, I did get the Mickey Mouse hat with the goofy plastic ears; I remember having it as a kid, but I don’t remember actually getting it at Disney World. One’s memory is a slippery thing sometimes. It makes you wonder what you really remember and what you just think you remember but actually saw on television, read in a book, or heard about from someone. Where was I? Oh yes, Disney World. Stephanie and I spent the day at Disney World. It was fun, exciting, and there were many things to do and see, but the most memorable moment for me was having lunch in a courtyard, because that is when and where I got the inspiration for my current novel, The Eighth Day. We were in an outdoor courtyard having … hamburgers, I think, sitting across from each other and tal
