Before Chica came to us she was a stray cat. Living in the streets of our town, eating from the rubbish. We have thousands of strays in our town. Most of them dirty, sick, poor. They are either living in the back streets near to the dumps or in the main street near to any restaurant. McDonald's has put already signs "Please do not feed the cats" because they are becoming more and more.Every day I see cats. Everywhere. Pregnant cats, kittens. I feel sorry for them. More sorry I feel when I see kids running behind those cats, throwing stones after them or punishing them with wood. Remembering the times of Ancient Egypt when cats have been treated as gods, it's even more sad.One time I was sitting in the office and heard a tiny meow from outside. There was a little kitten, maybe 10 days old, h

Pumuckl, today we will go to Aswan, Egypt's sunniest southern city and ancient frontier town located about 81 miles south of Luxor. It has a distinctively African atmosphere. In Aswan the Nile is at its most beautiful, flowing through amber desert and granite rocks, round emerald islands covered in palm groves and tropical plants.Oh Mommy, this sounds amazing. I am already so excited!Aswan is located in the south of Egypt, some 680 km south of Cairo, just below the Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser. Compared to Cairo and Luxor, Aswan is a far more relaxed, if smaller, alternative as a traveller's destination.First we will visit The Old Cataract Hotel. You remember Mommy reading the book "Death on the Nile"?The Old Cataract Hotel is a beautiful hotel in Aswan, that was made famous by the Agatha Chr

Barry Rubin talks about the state of Egypt under undemocratic president Hosni Mubarak, who's now about 80 years old. The question is - how much longer can he continue? And, better still, what'll happen when's gone?
Even now, there's every sign that relations with Egypt, as well as that country's own stability, are withering away, and that the Muslim Brotherhood is rising in the background. The
Chica: Pumuckl, as you are still not fully recovered I thought today we will relax a bit. What do you think about spending the day at the Red Sea? Sunbathing, napping, I can go swimming... You would like to do that?Pumuckl: Oh yes Mommy, this would be great! I'll just get our hats and sunglasses! Chica: Pumuckl, please don't forget the sunscreen!Chica: But this day is not for relaxation only! I told you before we will travel through our beautiful country not just for fun, you should also learn something! Well, let's talk about the beaches in Egypt a bit!Egypt's natural boundaries consist of more than 2,450 kilometers of coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Suez, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea. As in the coastal regions, temperatures range between an average minimum of 14
Life in ancient Egypt, “Gift of the Nile,” was centered largely on agriculture. The majority of the people were involved in farming, and the growing season lasted eight-nine months. Wheat, fruits and vegetables were the principal crops, although there was some pastoral farming of cattle, sheep, or goats. Farmers in ancient Egypt worked to reach a level of subsistence so that they could feed themselves and pay their taxes. During the annual flooding of the Nile, which typically lasted from July through November, farming was impossible. But when the waters receded, a thick layer of fertile silt over the farmlands remained to insure rich soil for their crops and thick grasses for their grazing animals. The country of Egypt consisted of two narrow strips of arable land lining either bank of

Pumuckl, today we will take the train to Alexandria! Alexandria is just beautiful with its promenade and beaches at the Mediterranean Sea and we will also visit the famous library and other very important sights. The weather in Alexandria is like Europe so you will not feel that hot today. It also rains a lot here as in Alexandria there are real seasons.Alexandria, with a population of 3.5 to 5 million, is the second-largest city in Egypt, and its largest seaport that serves about 80% of all of Egypt's imports and exports. Alexandria is also a very important tourist resort. In ancient times, Alexandria was one of the most famous cities in the world. It was founded around 331 BC by Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great, who was also in his Persian Campaign, and remained Egypt's capital for n
A few days ago Jeff Breinholt, my colleague on the Counterterrorism Blog noted a valuable new web resource, the Global Muslim Brotherhood Report, open to responsible researchers who are willing to provide a name and institutional affiliation. Today the site gives a rundown on an extremely interesting case in Egypt, where five leaders of the international Muslim Brotherhood were sentenced in abstentia to10 years in prison for terrorism and money laundering. Those convicted include some of the oldest...(read more)
OK, let's talk about the shopping in Egypt. There are a few products that Egypt is very well known for and we were brought to the shops for demonstrations. There were markets and vendors at every stop of our trip. The vendors could be quite aggressive at times but we learned very quickly not to show any interest unless we intended to buy, have tea and miss our bus. No, we didn't miss our bus (I know...that would at the top of the list of dumbass things I would do), but I'm just saying.1) Carpets... We stopped by a carpet school where young kids learn how to make silk, wool and cotton rugs. Their small fingers can tie the intricate knots. They are also being educated. Connor and I tried our hands at tying knots then we took a spin around the showroom. I found the carpets to be p
I can't believe it at last H&M and Juicy couture are in Egypt !!! Oh boy oh boy oh boy !! H&M has now an official branch in City Stars and Juicy Couture is available in some ladies high class shop in Heliopolis , for those who interested , the Juicy Couture Pet collection is there !! Strangely I saw the opening of the Juicy Couture in Egypt in some English Life style magazine and I was surprised that all the ladies who were in the opening where above 40 years old !! Juicy Couture is made for much younger girls , this is the policy and its target market. Already Juicy is known to be expensive in the United States. Look I do not hate that these fancy brands to come and open branches in Egypt but now !!?? our economic situation is not the perfect one , of course these brands a

We woke up very early to catch a bus from our hotel in Cairo to the airport where we flew to Luxor. We were to board our boat in Luxor for the Nile River cruise. Due to the lack of communication from our travel agent and our representative, we wore travel clothes with the understanding that we would be boarding the ship, having lunch and would have time to change before we set off to the Valley of the Kings. Not so. Our bus pulled up to the boat, nobody was permitted to get off or check in. And off to the Valley of the Kings (be sure to click that link, it contains fantastic images) we went. Thankfully, when the bus stopped we were permitted to get socks and shoes out of our suitcases, but we were still not feeling prepared. We had a lovely day at the Valley of the Kings. We really l
You know I just love to tell a story I really shouldn't tell...so here I go...After our Luxor tours in the morning, we were able to check in at the boat and have lunch before setting off again. We had been up early and were tired. Also, my leg muscles were really sore from walking in a squatting position at the pyramids the day before. So we opted out of the afternoon tour, and it was not the last tour of which we decided to opt out.Side note: Sometimes, when we're kidding around, I'll jokingly tell Connor that his freak flag is flying high or to lower his freak flag when he starts goofing around at an especially inappropriate time or place. I'll come back to this point later. We changed our clothes and set off to wander around the boat and check out our surroundings. We went up to the
Our arrival into Cairo was not without snags. I was very worried that the beginning of our trip was going to be a sign of things to come. As it turns out, I was right. Egypt is fantastic. Our travel agent--not so much. After many phone calls back and forth in an attempt to obtain the correct information--everyone had a different story--we finally got things sorted. Eventually, our guide showed up and our time in Cairo was looking up. The rest of the day was completely surreal.I've always dreamed of seeing the pyramids. I was so glad that our guide made the whole trip so worth while.Connor standing in front of our hotel, see the pyramid behind himWe met our guide, Eman, at 9am and set off with two other couples. It was a small and friendly group. We became fast friends through our s

Pumuckl, today I will teach you belly dancing. It's a shame you didn't learn it yet. Every Egyptian can do belly dance! We know how to move and to know since we are born. This lays in our genes, you know! Most of the tourists visiting Egypt wach at least one of the famous belly dance shows. Travel agencies and hotels are offering traditional nights and excursions which include the oriental dance show.Pumuckl: Mommy, do you know some of the most famous belly dancers in Egypt? The Egyptian-style belly dance (Arabic = raqs sharqi) is based on Baladi an later the work of belly dance legends Samia Gamal, Tahiya Karioka, Naima Akef, and other dancers who rose to fame during the golden years of the Egyptian film industry. Later dancers who based their styles partially on the dances of these artists
Yesterday I was driving down the road, minding my own business, when suddenly I smelled Egypt! I knew it had to be an olfactory hallucination because there was nothing around to create such a smell. Lilacs, dogwoods, and grass don't smell that way.All of a sudden, I was like a heroin addict who gets a whiff of rubber and starts vividly remembering his last fix. Or a food addict who walks into a carnival who tries to resist the smell of frying elephant ears mingled with carnival sausage. It just makes you jones for the thing you love, you know?Actually, I catch the scent of Egypt about a couple times a year. Sometimes it's a real scent that just reminds me of being there- like being in a hookah bar can take me to the sidewalks of Cairo where old gallabeya dressed men are passing the afterno
Today is our last day in Sharm El Sheik. It's a low-key day of resting and packing. I haven't had consistent internet access throughout this trip, but I have been reading your comments via email on my phone.Yesterday, we chartered a boat to take us snorkeling on the Red Sea. We were toured out and wanted to be away from the crowds. The weather was perfect and the whole day was gorgeous. There is something quite magical about the Red Sea. I'm not sure if it's the history, the color of the water or the bounty of sea life, but it has bewitched me.I really didn't expect to see dolphins, either. A family of five followed along side of us for a while and then joined us at the bow of the boat.
We had three locations on our itinerary with an Egyptian lunch served to us on the boat. I only did t

Here we are cruising on the Nile River. Actually, we're at a complete stand still while we wait our turn to ascend the river lock system. We are travelling south to north but here that's referred to as upper to lower Egypt due to the direction that the river flows. I can't believe I'm in Egypt.I have a ton of photos and lots of stories but I haven't had internet access for a few days...and it's unreliable at best along the Nile. So, I just wanted to let everyone know that my teeth are intact, I haven't broken any bones and we're all having the time of our lives.

Al-Arabiya - Egyptian police clashed with protesters in the Nile Delta city of Mahalla on Sunday, firing tear gas and arresting at least 150 after plans for a strike at the city's textile factory were scrapped under pressure from security forces. Angry residents demanding an end to price hikes and soaring inflation set two schools ablaze and burnt tires along the city's railway.

I did not follow up the H5N1 cases in Egypt this week as I was so busy , seriously I could not keep it but now I am back on track. One of the important things that happened this week is that there was a H5N1 suspected case in Alexandria , a Governate that was far way from the outbreak , still we are not sure if it is a H5N1 positive case , if it is "insh Allah it won't" the infection may have came from poultry not from the Governate but from the country side villages near the coastal city. On Wednesday a 3 years old kid Mohamed Adel Abdel El-Salam was detained in the hospital for suspicion in H5N1 , his samples were sent to Cairo , hopefully insh Allah it will be negative and he will be released from the hospital The good news that made me happy is that 7 detained cases wer

Egypt is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. Regular people from outside the university , from outside This is an important indication that people are just fed up with those crazy prices Technorati Tags: Gaza,Cairo University,Citizen Journalism,Economy,Democracy,National,Israel,Regional, protests,Palestine,Mideast,Middle east,News,Africa

Through the dust and sand, these three giants stand proudly overseeing so much of the world's history. Crowds snap photos and gaze in amazement, touts hawk the latest in T-shirts, plastic pyramids and hats to hide the sun. Camels cruise by, seemingly unaware of the fuss. Built over 4,500 years ago, the Pyramids are the only survivor of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Although there are around 100 pyramids in Egypt and Sudan, the most famous are the Pyramids of Giza, a virtual suburb of Cairo. As the ancient Egyptians believed in the afterlife, the pyramids are built on the west side (setting sun side) of the Nile and are glorious mausoleums to the pharaohs. They sit on a perfect north-south alignment. When you are there, note the extraordinary architectural skill - the huge blocks

From Easy Does It, Feb. 16:In the Promises, (Big Book of AA) we read- "We will know a new freedom and happiness " This is an almost unbelievable promise. Before recovery, we had little choice and less freedom. Everything we did had to be set up to meet the demands of our compulsion. Try as hard as we possibly could, we could never prevent the consuming urge of our addiction..We were slaves, like it or not. When freeedom came with abstinence, so came joy, gratitude, and love for others and ourselves. "As we approach this time of year, I remember my first Pesach (Passover) in the 12 step Program. I sat at the Pesach Seder, and tears began streaming down my face, as I read about freedom from being enslaved in Egypt, and how we are supposed to imagine ourselves as being freed. For the first ti

Most people who think of Egypt think of antiquities, but Egypt offers much more. Certainly it is a prime location to see our great heritage from the ancient world, including Pyramids and wonderful temples, but it is also part of the Holy Land, and tours to Christian and other religious monuments are popular. Yet Egypt also offers nature and desert treks, great scuba diving and even golf, fishing and birding expeditions. One may choose to relax on the wondrous Egypt Red Sea or Sinai coasts, take in the high culture of Cairo, or even leisurely float down the Egyptian Nile on a luxurious river boat.
Cairo. The capital of Egypt is home to one of the premier attractions of Egypt, the Pyramids of Giza which represent the archetypal pyramid structures of ancient Egyptian civilisation and - together with the Sphinx at the base of the Giza plateau - the iconic image of Egypt Gizeh in the minds of people worldwideAlexandria. Egypt’s second largest city and the country’s window on the Mediterranean Sea, is a faded shade of its former glorious cosmopolitan self, but still worth a visit for its many cultural attractions and memories of a glorious past. Here was located the former Lighthouse (Pharos in Greek), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient WorldEgypt is perhaps best known as the home of the ancient Egyptian civilization, with its temples, hieroglyphs, mummies, and pyramids
