Firing Up The Tank With Nanoparticles In an attempt to make liquid fuels more energy efficient, scientists have found that adding aluminum or aluminum oxide nanoparticles to diesel fuel improves its ignition properties Arizona State University mechanical engineer Patrick E. Phelan and coworkers found that diesel fuel containing 0.1% aluminum or aluminum oxide nanoparticles ignites more readily at lower temperatures than pure diesel. If the new government norm on fuel efficiency is introduced, 60% of the Indian cars including small cars, SUVs, and luxury cars being sold in showrooms will never see Indian roads. As per new standards, most of these cars consume a lot of fuel and are pretty low on mileage. It’s high time that these fancy sets of wheels got fancy numbers for fuel economy. Only 40% of the car models today qualify. None of the SUVs meet the new fuel efficiency norms and aren’t suitable to off-roading anywhere in India. Volvo releases C30 Efficiency modelVolvo C30 Efficiency becomes becomes the first model from the Swedish automaker to gain a B-band VED tax rating and will also be exempt from the London Congestion Charge, if the proposed changes to the scheme go ahead next year. As well as a focus on biofuels and hybrid technology, Volvo is also making energy-efficiency improvements to conventional drive trains. This work has led to the development of two new innovations which will be introduced during 2008 – a low CO2 emitting Volvo C30 and a new diesel Powershift transmission for the Volvo C30, S40 and V50.The new Volvo C30 Efficiency makes its global debut at the Frankfurt Motorshow on 11th September and is powered by a 105 PS 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine. By implementing a series of changes to the aerodynamics and rolling resistance as well as introducing higher gearing and improving powertrain efficiency1, Volvo has improved fuel consumption to 62.8mpg and reduced CO2 emissions to below 120g/km

Researchers at MIT have been working on a new kind of Sparkles ignition internal combustion engine. The homogeneous charge compression ignition or (HCCI) is expected to improve fuel-efficiency by up to 25%. The new engine helps to increase fuel efficiency by achieving combustion with only compression of the air fuel mix and not the traditional way of using a spark plug. Mercedes-Benz, a world class leader in engine design unveiled their concept engine, the DiesOtto. It works much the same way as the HCCI engine; Mercedes tested this new engine design in an S-class saloon and achieved 39mpg. Volkswagen has also been working on a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine, but this engine requires a special synthetic fuel, unlike the Mercedes’ DiesOtto which runs on regular gas.
