DOT Proposes Annual 4.5% Increase in Fuel Efficiency
Fuel efficiency standards for both passenger vehicles and light trucks would increase by 4.5 percent per year over the five-year period ending in 2015 – a 25 percent total improvement that exceeds the 3.3 percent baseline proposed by Congress last year – under a new proposal announced April 22 by U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters.   "This proposal is historically ambitious, yet achievable," Peters said. "It will help us all breathe a little easier by reducing tailpipe emissions, cutting fuel consumption, and making driving a little more affordable."   For passenger cars, the proposal would increase fuel economy from the current 27.5 miles per gallon to 35.7 miles per gallon by 2015. For light trucks, the proposal calls for increases from 23.5 miles per gal

Firing Up The Tank With Nanoparticles In an attempt to make liquid fuels more energy efficient, scientists have found that adding aluminum or aluminum oxide nanoparticles to diesel fuel improves its ignition properties Arizona State University mechanical engineer Patrick E. Phelan and coworkers found that diesel fuel containing 0.1% aluminum or aluminum oxide nanoparticles ignites more readily at lower temperatures than pure diesel. The researchers suspect that adding nanoparticles to diesel improves the fuel's radiative properties and its heat- and mass-transfer capabilities. The nanoparticles increase the probability that a single drop of the fuel will ignite at just above 700°C. The probability increases from about 15% for pure diesel to between 50 and 60% for nanoparticle-en

60% of cars don’t meet fuel efficiency specifications
If the new government norm on fuel efficiency is introduced, 60% of the Indian cars including small cars, SUVs, and luxury cars being sold in showrooms will never see Indian roads. As per new standards, most of these cars consume a lot of fuel and are pretty low on mileage. It’s high time that these fancy sets of wheels got fancy numbers for fuel economy. Only 40% of the car models today qualify. None of the SUVs meet the new fuel efficiency norms and aren’t suitable to off-roading anywhere in India. If enforced, the new norm will bring the current car bonanza to an abrupt end. To discourage low fuel efficiency cars, the US government has levied a gas guzzler tax on such models. Though not exactly same, this is something on similar lines from the Indian government. We don’t know

U.S. automakers were powerless to stop new fuel-efficiency legislation
...Whether they like it or not, the new 35-mpg standard should nudge Detroit's Big Three to become more aggressive in pursuing green technologies. But the question remains: Will Americans be willing to pay thousands of dollars extra for these cars? Consider, for example, that Honda scrapped the hybrid version of its Accord because it didn't offer enough fuel savings to justify the premium price that had to be charged for the technology. Similarly, sales of the big hybrid SUVs from GM and Chrysler aren't expected to make much of a dent, perhaps just 5,000 or 6,000 per year, because of their high costs. If U.S. politicians were really serious about improving fuel efficiency, they might follow Europe's example. Thanks to steep excise taxes, prices at the pump in some European coun

Merrill Lynch drops down trading efficiency table
Financial News Online Merrill Lynch, which was the most efficient Wall Street bank using risk in its trading business to generate revenues in 2006, is now falling behind its rivals, according to research by Financial News. Trading efficiency measures the sales and trading revenue banks generate for a given unit of risk taken. It is calculated by dividing revenues from sales and trading by the bank’s stated risk exposure. Value at risk measures potential loss due to adverse market movements in a defined period with a specified confidence level. In 2006 Merrill Lynch had trading revenues of $14.3bn (ˆ9.2bn) and an average VaR during the year of $50m, meaning it generated $286 in revenue per $1 of trading risk. Market efficiency is a concept describing market behavior. The assumption about market efficiency is a basic assumption in many economic and financial models and is required in order to build fundamentals. At the basis of market efficiency are three assumptions:1. There is a multitude of sellers and buyers with no one dominant enough to affect pricing.2. There is homogeneity in products or services offered.3. Perfect information is available to everyone. These assumptions are required in order to demonstrate equilibrium of supply and demand which constitute the price and quantity of every product or service. These market dynamics also help in understanding the processes which takes place in inefficient markets.Capital Market EfficiencyThe capital market is often regarded as a market which is

Latest iPhone Update (Firmware v1.1.2) Increases Efficiency
It seems that the last iPhone update that was released to send hackers back a step, increased the iPhone’s clock rate by a small amount. What this does is increase the CPU’s efficiency, and will generally speed up the handset - just don’t expect to notice the difference. Hey, any gain is good, right? In firmware v1.1.1, the clocking was at a firm rate, while speculation was raised that the CPU could actually handle around 50% more of a boost (and is being held back, likely to save battery power). As the picture indicates, it was taken by SysInfo, usable by jailbroken iPhones with the installer app, it shows this kind of internal information to the user. Like I said before, the ‘ARM’ CPU in the iPhone can handle around a 620-667Mhz CPU clock speed, but is held back to save battery power. Despite this being an almost discernible change, it doesn’t do much, so why did Apple do it? They probably did some tests and came up with this frequency having the

The proposal, which would require automakers to achieve 35 miles per gallon on average, is similar to a measure that was passed in the summer by the Senate but was bitterly opposed by the auto companies, who argued they did not have the technology or the financial resources to reach that goal. The auto companies gave up their long-held opposition to fuel- economy increases not long before the Senate version was passed, but proposed a much weaker alternative. In recent weeks, the chief executives of General Motors, the Ford Motor Company and Chrysler visited Capitol Hill in an effort to fend off a stronger measure, but the compromise announced Friday showed those efforts had little effect. The compromise emerged after days of difficult negotiations between House and Senate members and their

2008 Mercedes E 350 CGI Improved Efficiency Review
In parallel with the E 300 BLUETEC, Mercedes-Benz is expanding its model range with the E 350 CGI, which features an ultra-modern direct-injection petrol engine with a spray-guided combustion process. This unit, the world's first V6 petrol engine with this innovative combustion system and piezo-electric injection, was introduced in the CLS 350 CGI in spring 2006 and is now also available for the Saloon and Estate in the high-volume E-Class.Compared to the E 350, which remains in the range, the 215 kW/292 hp V-engine develops 20 hp more output and 15 newton metres more torque (365 Nm) while consuming ten percent less fuel. On an NEDC average the E 350 CGI Saloon, which accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, consumes just 8.7 litres of premium petrol per 100 kilometres. In both model variants the maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Telepathy = Efficiency
Can you imagine how much more incredibly productive you and your coworkers or classmates could be if you were all able to communicate telepathically? There'd never be any misunderstandings again! You'd easily be able to articulate and understand everybody's desires, needs, and desperations. A leader could communicate a goal to everyone at once, clearly, and you could all communicate to each other what needed to be done to best achieve that goal. Two heads are better than one. How about ten heads? Maybe Rick can do something better than Jesse, but he just hasn't been given the opportunity. With telepathy, delegation is a snap. Someone realizes something new must be done, and immediately the person in the best position to accomplish the new task is notified and put to work. What could be better? It's like working with a hive mentality, but even better. Everyone still has free will. Individuality is somehow heightened when everybody can share at a mental level. And if one pe

“Subprime” NOT the headline from Honeywell’s quarter - Part 1: Building Energy Efficiency
Since they reported on Friday morning, all I've been hearing is "Caterpillar reported terrible numbers and so did Honeywell, undermining the global growth thesis, causing the massive 300+ selloff in the Dow." Ok, I own CAT, which wasn't pretty. I guess I'm just glad it didn't take a 16% shallacking like it did same quarter last year (on my birthday no less!). Honeywell however, I thought was pretty darn good given headwinds such as the massive Dreamliner 787 delay and the housing recession. The headlines on Reuters reads: Honeywell

      PC Power Supply Efficiency
How The Efficiency Rating of A Power Supply Can Save You Money Introduction Personal computers use a tremendous amount of power these days. As the processors and components get more powerful, so does the amount of energy they need to consume. Some desktop systems now can consume almost as much power as a microwave oven. The problem is that even though your PC may have a 500W power supply, the amount of power that it actually pulls from the wall could be much higher than this. This articles takes a look at how much energy a power supply uses and what consumers can do when making a purchase to try and reduce that consumption. Power In Versus Power Out The electrical power that is supplied to your house runs at fairly high voltages. When you plug your computer system into the wall for power, this voltage does not flow directly to the components within the computer. The electrical circuits and chips run at much lower voltages than the current coming from the wall outlet. This is where the

EUROPE: The IEA Urges Governments to Mind the Energy Efficiency Gap
The global challenges of climate change and energy security require urgent action. “Improving energy efficiency is the most cost-effective concrete action governments can take in the short term to address climate change and energy security concerns” said Nobuo Tanaka, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Presenting a new IEA publication: Mind the Gap -- Quantifying Principal-Agent Problems in Energy Efficiency, he said “efficiency presents a unique opportunity; not only does it save energy, it reduces costs and lowers CO2 emissions. Yet, there is a gap between actual and optimal energy use”, Mr. Tanaka added. “A significant proportion of potential energy efficiency improvements is wasted, because of barriers in the energy market.”These obstacles to the efficient use of energy isolate consumers from the consequences of their energy choices. Market barriers take many forms. This new book takes an in-depth look at one pervasive barrier: Split incentives

Cost Efficiency in the Winter by Sunbeam Heated Bedding
Every time winter comes, people find themselves finding many alternatives to be able to get the proper heat and warmth to fight off the chills of cold weather that the winter brings. Some would turn up their thermostats a notch to ensure that they don’t get frost bite or find themselves chilling and their teeth grinding from the cold. When in bed, people will still need blankets to go along with the warmer thermostat settings. But with Sunbeam Heated Bedding, their blankets can do everything without the help of the usual home thermostat we have today. “According to the recent predictions by the NEADA for Winter 2007/2008, we estimate that consumers can save more than $180 on heating oil costs and over $170 on propane costs if they use Sunbeam(R) heated bedding while sleeping. Turning down the thermostat a few degrees and supplementing with a heated blanket can make a real difference on heating bills this upcoming season and for many winters to come.” Source: Heated Bed

      Government Efficiency
Normally the phrase government efficiency would be considered an oxymoron.   However, the politicos have become quite adept at spending our money and approving measures to do so very quickly. Congress passes many bills without reading them. Some are prepared so close to the vote that not even their sponsors really know what’s in them. That’s nothing. Now Congress can push through legislation no one reads even faster, lickety-split. It’s called “hotlining,” and it was designed to get nitpicky business-y kinds of things done quickly. But recently the business has turned serious. Read it all:  The Sam Adams Alliance - Unanimous Non-Consent Sponsored By: Images by Mike in WNY Unique and Original Buffalo Themed Gifts

TECHNOLOGY: The Role of LEDs In Energy Efficiency
Today, Energy Tech Stocks [ETS] has the fifth installment from our interview, outlining my LED stock picks. He quotes me at the start saying that it's "going to be a gigantic market" about LEDs. It is, but only when compared to the current size of the market... you can ramp up a lot from a very small base. LED bulbs are increasing in brightness and decreasing in price rapidly. It's these quickly improving economics that make me bullish about LEDs. Unlike many energy efficiency technologies, LEDs are a product that a business can sell. Much of energy efficiency involves a complete revamping of our ways of doing things. The truly gigantic market is the whole energy efficiency space, but it is much more difficult to invest in behavior change than it is to invest in product. Nevertheless, there are ways, such as with performance contracting companies, more efficient transmission, or smart metering. Before we get carried away looking at the sheer size of the potential energy e

Or maybe we should call it the lazy gene. Whatever it is, I have definitely passed it on to my daughter. Every morning Keri is responsible for an array of chores, one of which is to fold up the blankets on her bed. She is a very helpful girl and I am grateful that most of the time she accomplishes her jobs without complaining. However, just like most humans she is always looking for ways to make her life easier. Tonight when she was getting ready to climb in bed she proudly proclaimed, “I am going to try and not use any of my blankets tonight so I don’t have to fold them up in the morning.” ****************************************************************** If you don’t see me around much this week, it is because I am out playing with my family who is visiting from out of town!

Do Technological Tools Really Improve Efficiency?
By Jeffrey DavidsonScores of books and articles have been written about new technology, making the most of your on-line time, and how to not get left in the dust by all of the techno-twits that populate the cosmos. Contrary to most advice, the only time you have to adopt a new tool or technological device is when: (1) your organization or boss requires it, (2) your clients or constituents already use the technology, or (3) you would gain a strategic competitive advantage by doing so.I discovered the latter by talking with industry gurus, reading objective commentary on new technology, and staying alert and open to new possibilities. Personally, I always let a younger person handle any technology issues I face-- 24-year-olds tend to know the latest devices like the back of their hands. It is easy to get caught in the trap of acquiring some new tool of technology far in advance of your ability to use it, let alone benefit from it. 7 Tips To Improve Your Work Efficiency By More Than 100%

I mentioned some examples briefly then but I got some emails asking for more elaboration so I decided to write this article so everyone can benefit. They key to working efficiently is to minimize interruptions! So let’s that a look at the things we can do to minimize interruptions 1) Don’t Check Your Email For Update Every Other Minute Do you find yourself checking your email every now and then? Sometimes staring at your email Inbox when you don’t receive any new emails for more then 3 minutes? I do that sometimes but that is extremely disruptive and you are better off checking your email Inbox once every hour reading the Subject of the email only. Open only those that are important at work and KIV the rest till the end of the day. Take action only on those that requires immediate action and KIV the rest until you have c

Cheap labour, the first sign of bad work efficiency
From time to time I hear on TV some reports on how bad the work efficiency is in Romania. And on the other hand, with the same frequency I hear how much some employees work for some companies and how you are at the mercy of the employer with the overtime that never gets paid. Every person I know, young or old has stories about how much they work. So what's going on? It's bad work efficiency. Most managers think that because labor is so cheap is always better to hire an extra cheap man than to improve processes, technologies and tools. Let's get some examples to see what I'm really talking about: CRM Usage Most of companies don't use (and they don't even know they should use) CRM systems. They use excel and word, because investing in a good CRM seems always more expensive than hiring some more people. Agriculture Most of the agriculture is done by...horse !@#! And now, as it was a very dry year we see reports on TV about lost crops because it haven't rained in a while. Because

Electric and Hybrid Smart Cars: Fuel efficiency gone mad
The Smart car is not known for its speed but what it is known for is its superb fuel efficiency, which is why we thought it was very strange to hear that there is to be an Electric and Hybrid version of this small Mercedes vehicle. The electric version will have a 41hp electric motor, which will be able to reach speeds up to 69mph and will have a range of 70 miles. Charging time for the electric smart car is about 8 hours, and that will cost you about $3 in electric. Do not expect it to break any land speed records, as the electric Smart will only get from 0-60 in about 19.8 seconds. But that is not what the little car is about, it is about helping our environment by having zero emissions. The Hybrid Smart MHD or Micro Hybrid Drive has a starter generator, what happens is when the Hybrid Smart car comes to a complete stop or just under 5mph, the gas engine switches off and the electric motor kicks in. The emissions on the Hybrid Smart MHD are thought to be much lower than that of the

Sparkles ignition engine HCCI improves fuel-efficiency by up to 25%
Researchers at MIT have been working on a new kind of Sparkles ignition internal combustion engine. The homogeneous charge compression ignition or (HCCI) is expected to improve fuel-efficiency by up to 25%. The new engine helps to increase fuel efficiency by achieving combustion with only compression of the air fuel mix and not the traditional way of using a spark plug. Mercedes-Benz, a world class leader in engine design unveiled their concept engine, the DiesOtto. It works much the same way as the HCCI engine; Mercedes tested this new engine design in an S-class saloon and achieved 39mpg. Volkswagen has also been working on a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine, but this engine requires a special synthetic fuel, unlike the Mercedes’ DiesOtto which runs on regular gas.
