WYSIWYG HTML Editors – My Life Savers
I own a couple of websites. I simply love them and yes, for the obvious reason that I make money from them. But it’s a headache for me to edit or update them for several business needs. I am a total dumb when it comes to web designing skills like HTML coding and manipulating them. WYSIWYG editors are my life savers in those situations. If you don’t yet know what WYSIWYG stands for (Please don’t bang your head on computer screen to punish yourself!!), it is the abbreviation of What You See Is What You Get. Used in the computing world, the term actually describes a system through which you will be able to see the final outcome during the editing phase. With these sophisticated tools you do not need to edit the source codes. Instead just edit the actual page elements directly and you can

      Calling All Editors
So I’ve written all the words for my nifty e-book, but as I’ve looked over it more and more, I realized that I don’t like the way it flows. It feels like a series of blog posts instead of a perfectly cohesive ebook. I think I need help bringing it all together. So, if any of you editor-types out there would like to get lots of blog love and laugh in superiority at my grammar challenged self, and help me finalize this ebook, please contact me. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who contacted me. Hopefully, the folks who are working on my ebook now can smack it into something good.

'When people did help they were given a flattering name. They were "editors" '
From: How I fell in love with Wikipedia It was like a giant community leaf-raking project in which everyone was called a groundsman. Some brought very fancy professional metal rakes, or even back-mounted leaf-blowing systems, and some were just kids thrashing away with the sides of their feet or stuffing handfuls in the pockets of their sweatshirts, but all the leaves they brought to the pile were appreciated. And the pile grew and everyone jumped up and down in it, having a wonderful time. And it grew some more, and it became the biggest leaf pile anyone had ever seen, a world wonder. And then self-promoted leaf-pile guards appeared, doubters and deprecators who would look askance at your proffered handful and shake their heads, saying that your leaves were too crumpled or too

The venue is just so vast, so open, that anything but the most advanced sound equipment is utterly futile. Sons and Daughters may well be a very exciting young band with a captivating front-woman in Adele Bethel, but they sound flat and tinny against the backdrop of uninterested punters and cloudy vibrations. Weak Leaders with Strong Support or Strong Editors with Weak Arguments?
I found the New York Times editorials relating to the Annapolis summit disappointing. I read Thomas Friedman twice to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Even after my double-check I’m still left with the impression that he didn’t say much. It can be summed as “Yay, Annapolis” along with an obligatory pessimism, in case the process ends like all other Israeli-Palestinian accords. From someone who’s considered one of the world’s leading columnists, I’d expect something more insightful. The editorial titled “Starting from Annapolis” was even more problematic. Its expectation that an Israeli-Palestinian agreement “could also diminish the appeal of Islamic extremists and begin to repair America’s battered reputation in the Muslim world” is a complete misreading of reality. If anyone on the editorial board of the NYT truly thinks that Israel / Palestine is the main reason for Islamic-American confrontation (and more specifically Iranian-American conflict), then world-

Panasonic Lumix DMC-L10K - CNET editors' review
When Panasonic introduced its first digital SLR, the Lumix DMC-L1, a lot of people had high hopes, which were subsequently dashed. Now, Panasonic has put out the 10-megapixel Lumix DMC-L10. If the L1 was Panasonic dipping its toes in the SLR pool, then the L10 is Panasonic diving into the deep end. Will the DMC-L10 sink or swim? Let's find out.Panasonic is marketing the L10 as an entry-level SLR, and its design works well for that market. It's on the small side, has an articulated LCD that can flip out to the left of the camera and swivel 270 degrees, live-view shooting, and its control buttons are laid out a lot like a superzoom or compact camera. The vast majority of buttons are on the right-hand side of the camera and reachable quickly and easily by thumb or forefinger. Like more and more SLRs lately, the grip is short, so your pinky dangles while shooting. However, it does have a nice shape, with a cutaway for your middle finger and a contoured area on the top of the camera back

Pitching the right editors and bloggers
In public relations it’s all about relationship building and knowing which editors and bloggers to pitch your ideas to. Many editors will not take emails and phone calls from individuals due to the fact they are not paying attention to the stories they are writing. One horror story that I found was on Longtail.com where Chris Anderson, editor of Wired Magazine, posted the email addresses of people who are blacklisted from pitching him EVER AGAIN! It’s a great debate between the lazy approach to PR, which is spaming every writer you can find, and sending the right pitches to the right editors. This could be the difference between having your story picked up and never speaking to a reporter again. I leave you with this; do your due diligence, research the right editor, read several stories he or she has written in the past. There are several ways of doing this like Google News, Lexus Nexis, etc…. Journalists are so busy with thousands of pitches, you want to make sure you

Editors - We try to touch on death in a positive way
Statt beinhart existenzieller Dunkelheit, Morbidität und Verlust (”You are fading”) nun urplötzlich alles rosarot? An end has a start”. Denn wie sagen sie so schön: “We try to touch on death in a positive way”

Lowepro Cirrus TLZ 25 - CNET editors' review
The holster design has been a staple of camera bags for a long time. Lowepro's Cirrus line is a new take on the holster design. If you're not familiar with the holster-type camera bag, it's based on a triangular shape, tapering toward the bottom, and holds an SLR or SLR-type camera, typically with a small zoom lens. There's not too much you can do to update this idea, but you have to hand it to Lowepro, since they do a great job of modifying simple things and giving them a classy contemporary look. One great example of this is the Cirrus TLZ 25's handle, which carves a cute curve over the top of the bag, while its gray color provides a counterpoint to the bag's otherwise mostly black color scheme. The bag has another splash of gray in the band that sits below the bag's top flap. Part of the gray band forms the top of the small front pouch, which has a tab of Velcro behind the Lowepro logo to keep it closed. This pouch doesn't seem very large, but it's bigger than it seems and c

Useful tools for editors: Counter Display
Here is a handy little generator for Final Cut Pro (or Final Cut Express as the site lists several plug-ins written for FCE) that has the ability to add a counter over footage. It does a number of other things but the real usefulness to me is its ability to either count either up or down, to or from zero, for the length you specify via the generator’s length in the timeline. You can display hours, minutes, seconds and/or frames as well as adding custom text. Font sizes, colors and the background can be changed to make it very customizable. It’s not a timecode reader or generator (you already get those in FCP) but can be useful in its own way. The only downside is that it’s not a real-time generator so it does have to be rendered. Rewrite that thing to make it real-time and it would be darn near perfect. A number of other plug-ins are available as well. Oh, and they’re free!

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 - CNET editors' review
The good: Exceptionally streamlined, comfortable shooting design; broad, functional feature set, including sensor-shift image stabilizer; excellent photo quality; generally fast performance. The bad: A few design quirks; proprietary hot shoe. The bottom line: A top-of-the-line amateur digital SLR camera, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 will delight Konica Minolta diehards and makes a great choice if you don't already have a stake in other lens systems. Reviewed by: Lori GruninI know Sony's older, entry-level Alpha DSLR-A100 has its share of fans, but I never got a chance to shoot with it, which made the 12-megapixel Alpha DSLR-A700 my introduction to Sony's take on dSLRs. And I soon found that the unprepossessing, very un-Sony-like design camouflages a sophisticated dSLR that's enjoyable to shoot and can hold its own quite well against models from veteran camera manufacturers such as Canon and Nikon. True, much of the DNA for Sony's dSLRs comes from the company's acquisition of deceased

What do you all out there think? For some context: I am currently reading a novel that has a lot of mistakes that not only should never have been written, but should have been picked up by the editor, the writer, and the copywriter. There were POV violations all over the place, flat characters, character development issues and contradictions, and even a sentence in the book where a huge line of zeros randomly appears in the middle of a word. The last I might be willing to pass to printing error, but that's pushing it.So, how much of that should have been addressed by the editor before the book went to the press? Do you personally expect more from an editor?(Don't click the read more, there isn't any more after this)

Live Show Review: The Editors Leave Their Mark on BOSTON
Since early this spring I have been on a live music tear. I have been checking out at least two to three amazing indie rock shows at week. When none is available I try to check out a blues bands. I paint this picture so that what follows can be taken into perspective...Last Thursday's Editors show here in Boston (9/6/07) was easily one of the best two or three shows I have ever witnessed here in the city. The show was great, because all the necessary elements were in place...The Editors - - - - - - - -Smith (at front) is one of the best these days. Through radio appearances, live shows, bootlegs and video performances - the Editors had demonstrated over the last year that they are improving - almost day to day based on live recordings. Secondly, the songs are getting better: As much as I thoroughly enjoyed the "Back Room" record - the new album; "An End Has A Start" is just better. The thing that brought it all home last Thursday is the fact that Editors frontman Tom Smith has evident

War of the Analogies: The Problem Isn't Mr. Maliki - The Editors
The Editors at The Times continue on about Iraq and contribute with fuel to the fire during the "War of the Analogies."According to them:"Blaming the prime minister of Iraq, rather than the president of the United States, for the spectacular failure of American policy, is cynical politics, pure and simple. It is neither fair nor helpful in figuring out how to end America’s biggest foreign policy fiasco since Vietnam."Their closing two cents:"If Mr. Bush, whose decision to inject Vietnam into the debate over Iraq was bizarre, took the time to study the real lessons of Vietnam, he would not be so eager to lead America still deeper into the 21st century quagmire he has created in Iraq. Following his path will not rectify the mistakes of Vietnam, it will simply repeat them."Bizarre" they call it..."inject Vietnam" have they no shame? Do they just forget what is necessary to pump their trash out?I'm pretty sure the board hasn't been too pleased with Maliki in the recent past...have the

Editors - An End Has A Start
Le riflessive The Weight Of The World e When Anger Shows sono ballate molto valide, i riferimenti agli U2 sono lampanti in Bones e Racing Rats e qui si torna a pestare sull'acceleratore. Now Hear This: The Editors Have Spoken Again
Will someone please, please, please flush the toilet Paper???According to the emotion and angst filled, non logic using editorial board members at The NY Times:"Prolonging the war for another two years will not bring victory. It will mean more lives lost, more damage to America’s international standing and fewer resources to fight the real fight against terrorists."This group whines like Mike Gravel at a Democrat Debate, why are they so invested in the never changing need to get out? Who are these people? Who are the members?Because we are still in Iraq (big surprise!) it is nothing but an utter failure. Because we are in Iraq, "Al Qaeda’s top leadership (has) regrouped and (is) resurgent in its old strongholds along the Pakistani-Afghan frontier." Is the logic(?) that we could then invade Pakistan or send more military to Afghanistan? What kind of a "quagmire" would be created by sending more soldiers to Afghanistan; do we really want to get involved in something like that?

The Hearing Loss of The NY Times Editors – Scooter Libby
From the opinion makers; members of the NY Times Editorial board (italics mine): “Presidents have the power to grant clemency and pardons. But in this case, Mr. Bush did not sound like a leader making tough decisions about justice. He sounded like a man worried about what a former loyalist might say when actually staring into a prison cell.” The NY Times Editors always “hear” things differently; why is that? Oftentimes, too often, I find myself visiting the pages of opinion in the Times; they irk me. Perhaps it’s their smarmy, condescending tone. Maybe it’s their utter dismissal of so many pieces of a puzzle that allows them to come to their conclusions that bothers me. One has to realize that the opinion page of any paper is just that, opinion. I don’t know why, but for some inexplicable reason I expect more from what used to be a respected paper. So much of what people read or view these days is colored with words that conjure up images the writer wa

      Does Digg need editors
Read Write Web asks the question “Does Digg need Editors” and comes up with some pretty convincing reasons why they desperately need editors to handle bad or poorly worded, spell checked submissions. They use of their own articles as the showcase of a poorly dugg article. It doesn’t need to be this way. One relatively painless enhancement digg could make to the site is to allow a badly submitted post to be edited - perhaps by a power digg user, who is given privileges to ‘fix’ bad submissions. Normal digg users can then continue to submit posts (because don’t get me wrong, I am very happy for any digg user to submit articles of ours), but at least there is some quality control over the submissions. There would only need to be a flag that the digg story has been edited, and a way for users to check the original submission wording - so that everything is transparent. The NY Times Editors Deceitful Ways
“The day when the network commentators and even the gentlemen of the New York Times enjoyed a form of diplomatic immunity from comment and criticism of what they said — that day is gone. . . . When their criticism becomes excessive or unjust, we shall invite them down from their ivory towers to enjoy the rough and tumble of public debate. . . . The time for blind acceptance of their opinions is past. And the time for naïve belief in their neutrality is gone.” The NY Times editorial board continues apace with its “radical” ideas and misconstruing of reality for who knows what cause. This morning they’re babbling on, yet again about a 5-4 decision by the Supreme Court; a Supreme Court with a “radical new majority” that “has grown more conservative by the year.” The 5-4 ruling struck “down voluntary programs to integrate schools in Seattle and Louisville, Ky.” Which the board believes and screams that this is a complete and utter reversal of the now

Throughout Ontario and the rest of the world, abuse and neglect of olderpersons is largely under-recognized or treated as an unspoken problem.Unfortunately, no community or country in the world is immune from thiscostly, public health and human rights crisis. But, it's too bad I have heard recent live material - because it seems like they have already surpassed the songs and talent recorded on this album. (True.) It was an honest review, if not mixed in its praise. You see, the Editors are better than their last album (which was very good to be fair and worth owning.) Interpol Vs. Editors
Okay, so Interpol were here first, ever since 1998 in fact and entered our lives with their fantastic debut Turn On The Bright Lightsin 2002. They’re probably the most British-sounding American band there is and after their rise to fame, numerous similar bands popped all over the place, including Editors. I wrote before about these four guys from Birmingham, England and they’re definitely among my favorites in this genre. Surprisingly, both bands are releasing new albums in the upcoming months (Editors‘ An End Has A Start on June 25, Interpol’s Our Love To Admire on July 10) and have already released their first singles for our listening pleasure. Well, what is there to say? Both bands don’t really sound any different than they did on their previous releases but for me, Editors win this round. I’ll wait for the album releases for a full evaluation though. Stream: Interpol - The Heinrich Maneuver Editors - Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors D

      Newspaper editors and Al Jazeera
In a recent article in an Arabic (translated here on Memri) a Qatari newspaper editor focused on a major world injustice. No, not street children starving in India, or the raping and murdering of his Muslim brothers and sisters in Darfur, but the harsh treatment of Qatari newspaper editors who are being deprived of their rightful dues and swimming pools. Another newspaper editor explains why. It’s very unfair that Al Jazeera employs non-Qataris and gives them more money than me. Why should they have a luxurious apartment, swimming pools and money when they are not Qatari? We have Qatarisation kicking out talented people in every other industry to make room for Qataris, why not in Al Jazeera too?I mean look at it. What have these fancy foreign journalists got? Okay, so they are talented, determined, well-educated people who fought their way to the top in a competitive industry and have experience of working in world-renowned news networks. The Photoshop Controversy I read two comic strips: Dilbert by Scott Adams and What The Duck by Aaron Johnson (I’m an engineer who likes photography, so these are all I need).  Most people have heard of Dilbert, but What The Duck is at bit more of a niche comic and fewer people have probably seen it.  What a shame.  The comic is about a photographer who happens to be a duck — actually, all the photographers seem to be ducks.  Aaron tackles many of the issues faced by photographers, and it’s stinkin’ funny — but probably just to photographers.  Today’s strip pokes at one of the more heated topics among photographers and photo editors. This is funny on many levels, but it also surfaces a few Photoshop topics of choice.  It seems like everybody knows how to use Photoshop on some level, and it’s interesting to hear inexperienced users talk it down like it’s no big deal.  Let me just say that I’m no Photoshop expert, but I know e

      Fashion editors don't follow fashion
Fashion magazines are arguably the single most influential source of fashion information. They show their readers the new trends, hot designers and desirable items — and they encourage readers to buy them. The editor of a fashion magazine has a great deal of influence over the tone and content of their publication… but they rarely wear most of the trends themselves. Today, I’ll show you how little the style of three very powerful fashion editors has barely changed over the years, despite massive changes in fashion trends. Anna Wintour doesn’t follow fashion Anna Wintour is known as one of the most powerful women in fashion. US Vogue is probably the single most influential fashion magazine in the world, and Wintour is said to rule over every facet of it. Wanted: new editors for DC Comics
Lots of chatter on several weblogs over this press release by Eddie Berganza, in which he drops the ball in his appeal for a female audience for Supergirl. I'll pinpoint a few of his nosedives: When Joe Kelly took over fully with issue #9, we discussed the many paths we could take Kara in. Jeph Loeb with the incomparable Mike Turner had already created the buzz, and Greg Rucka kept your attention during his all too short run. What could Joe do? After a very serious conference call that involved Joe, our amazing penciller Ian Churchill, and my then Assistant Editor Jeanine Schaefer (she was pivotal in giving us a woman's point of view on the character—like, can Supergirl gain some weight, please?), it was decided to have Kara just try to be a real teenager. No standard hero on patrol bit here. We were gonna make Kara a typical teenager, which meant she wouldn't listen to the grownups (in her case a guy named Kal) and wouldn't appreciate being given chores (killing Kal for her dad,

Pitching Newspaper and Magazine Editors – The Difference Between the US and UK Market and Why It's Not All About the Pitch!
To set the ball rolling, here are some basic differences between the US and UK print media markets.1) The UK newspaper and magazine market and audience is substantially smaller than in the US. Understandable if we consider a population of approx. 260 million in the States and a meager 60 million or so in the UK.2) The US has a large subscription base. Most UK sales are from newsagents and shops / news stands and stores.3) The UK utilizes freelance input to a greater degree than in the States. 4) US papers are more regionalized to cater for larger population, whereas UK national papers are the staple for breaking news and exclusives around Britain. (That’s not to say that regional do not break new stories they regularly do – but the money sits with the nationals).5) Cheque-or-checkbook journalism is alive and kicking, and would you believe still growing in the UK.So, how does that relate to freelancers pitching to these differing markets? Take for example New York; the focus with Ne

Washington Post Editors Steal My Words
In an editorial almost certainly written by Colbert King, The Washington Post comes down on my side regarding Superintendent Janey's call for a moratorium on new charter schools:The call by D.C. School Superintendent Clifford B. Janey for a moratorium on new charter schools in the District is one part reasonable and one part self-serving. Taking the latter first, it's clear that charter schools have developed into a threat to the traditional school system since they were authorized by Congress 10 years ago. As Post reporter Lori Montgomery has reported, more than 17,500 students enrolled last year in charter schools. Meanwhile, enrollment in the traditional public school system has taken a nose dive, from about 80,000 students to about 58,000. The movement represents the action of parents starved for quality education who are voting on the traditional school system with their feet. If Mr. Janey's schools are unable to compete successfully with charters, whose fault is that? The prop

After Microsoft and Google, Belgian editors go after Yahoo
After taking action against Microsoft and Google, Belgium's French-speaking newspapers are seeking redress from another Internet search engine, Yahoo, their lawyer has said. "We sent a letter of formal notice to Yahoo yesterday" so that it will stop publishing articles from Belgian newspapers on its search engine without prior authorisation, said Bernard Magrez, lawyer for the editors group Copiepresse said on Thursday. Copiepresse accuses Yahoo of violating copyright laws by giving Internet users access to archived newspaper articles which the papers themselves would now charge people to read. While its makes no threats in its letter, Copiepresse could take legal action if it is not satisfied with Yahoo's response. A year ago, Copiepresse took Google News to court in Belgium to stop it reproducing content from French-language and German-language newspapers in Belgium on its Belgian website. On September 5, a lower court ordered the California-based company to desist, and said it wou
