The Affects of Acne on Relatiohships - Jay, Edinburgh, Scotland
Hi I just wanted to say thanks very much for creating this website, people don't really understand the implications and depression caused from having acne. I have had acne since I was 15; I am now 29 years old. The way it affects your social life and affects your relationships and even how it even affects your job. I was a postman for 2 years and had to give it up because it made my acne so much worse; with sweating and the delivery bag rubbing on my shoulders and back. I worked in a bank for the last 2 years but never really felt comfortable with alot of my colleagues and other staff members, I always felt they looked at my face and neck and never really saw me. Acne has affected me so badly I have been on anti-depressants for 10 years. I have now decided to go back to college and get my

The visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia was much more interesting than I anticpated. In fact, it was facinating and the way they have set up the tour is really good. You are given a device, kind of like a big mobile phone, when you board the ship. As you move around the ship there are numbered points which, when you press the appropriate buttons on the device, you get a chunk of information about. To cap it off, they had a fabulous sweetie shop on board. I had strawberries & cream fudge, rum & raisin fudge and pecan & maple syrup fudge! The or

      Atrium, Edinburgh Scotland
Atrium was established in 1993 by Andrew and Lisa Radford and is located in the Usher Hall with the Traverse and Lyceum Theatres. They have had a consistent reputation throughout the years of being one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh, having won several awards, and they use only premium ingredients sourced from local suppliers. This small, candle lit, restaurant served us the best meal we had during our 2 1/2 week long trip through England, Scotland and Ireland. We were promptly seated upon arrival and after ordering wine and food an amuse bouche was served and this particular night we were treated to a Carrot Soup with Sesame Oil. Subtle flavors and great taste of summer through the baby carrots the soup was made from.We went from there to sharing two starters. The Scallops with Tomato Risotto was exactly just that: small, sweet, tender scallops served on a bed of very creamy, rich, risotto with diced tomatoes. This was absolutely delicious and the perfect starter as it would hav

      Edinburgh owner calls for talks
BOB Carruthers, the owner of Edinburgh Rugby, wants talks to end the row between the club and the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU). The dispute centres on the distribution of Celtic League and European Cup fees, with Edinburgh saying they are owed a six-figure sum - something the SRU deny. Edinburgh prevented 12 of its World Cup-bound players training with Scotland last week and then resigned their associate membership of the SRU on Monday. That led the SRU to say Edinburgh would be unable more…

Plans for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Personally, I have wanted to attend the tattoo for years and we have been trying to get tickets but they are like gold dust. This year though we decided to go as a Squadron and yippee we got 30 tickets (booked in November last year), excellent! We are staying at the Sea Cadet accomodation at Rosyth and are going to make a bit of a weekend of it. We hope to arrive at Rosyth around 4pm on Friday afternoon and after dinner plan to take the cadets to one of the local Air Cadet ranges for some .22 marksmanship (an excellent tool to teach youngster self discipline). On Saturday we are going to visit the Royal Yacht Brittannia at Leith. Their website states we will tour "five of Britannia’s magnificent decks, taking you through the fabulous State Apartments and crew’s quarters, and ending in the gleaming Engine Room". Hovercraft Trial between Edinburgh - Kirkcaldy
Stagecoach are running a two week trial of hovercraft service from 16 - 28 July 2007, between Portobello in Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy in Fife. The service will run hourly Monday to Saturday unti 18.00. Journey time is only 20 minutes. Fares are £9.50 return or £4.50 for an off peak return and include a shuttle bus to Edinburgh city centre or Ocean Terminal. I think it sounds like a great idea for commuters as the 20 minute journey time is much quicker than driving round to the congested Forth Road Bridge. It will also be a pleasant day trip. I plan to do the crossing one day. Technorati Tags: hovercraft. Edinburgh, Kirkcaldy

      Suggested Itineraries in Edinburgh
Edinburgh: The City of Alcohol, Tours and Filth? All great cities have a nickname that supposedly tells us something about their character. You know, Paris is the ‘City of Light’, Rome is the ‘Eternal City’, New York never sleeps and all of that. Back in the day Edinburgh was called ‘Auld Reekie’, which is Scottish for “Old Smoky” or “Old Smelly”. The city was given this term (of endearment?) because of the large quantities of smoke emitted from factories and chimneys around the city. Edinburgh is indeed still a smelly city — of course, the foul smell of early industrialisation has been replaced by the sweet scent of beer coming from nearby breweries. Since the Auld Reekie days, the Scottish capital has been spared from kitschy monikers. Not so anymore. I am about to pitch a couple of possible names that could be internationally associated with Edinburgh. Who knows? History might prove me right. Edinburgh: The Cit

      Water of Leith Walkway, Edinburgh
Yesterday I visited the Leith end of the Water of Leith Walkway, the 12 mile path alongside the Water of Leith river from Balerno to Leith, through central Edinburgh. You can read more about the Water of Leith in Edinburgh off the beaten track. Leith is Edinburgh’s port and the area has been revamped recently. There is a collection of reproductions of paintings illustrating the heyday of Leith port at the side of the walkway. The massive offices of the Scottish Executive are in Leith and blocks of luxury waterside flats have sprung up. The Royal Yatch Britainnia, is moored at the side of the Ocean Terminal shopping and leisure centre. There are numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants. If you’d like to stay in Leith when you’re in Edinburgh the Harbour Apartments are a good choice. In June if you stay for 3 nights during the week it costs £75 a night for an apartment for 2 guests. In low season I have seen them for as little as £35 a night. There’s private

Review of Smiths Guest House, Edinburgh
I stayed at Smiths Guest House in Edinburgh this week. I thought that the guesthouse was clean and tastefully decorated, with stripped wood and neutral colours - no flowers or frills in site. The breakfast was adequate. There is free on street parking in the side roads close to the guest house. It is good value for a single room. I stayed in the single room which has a private bathroom outside the room, for £27 a night. The single room is pretty small, I think that the shower room is probably about the same size as the bedroom. You have to walk across the corridor to get to your bathroom which you unlock with the same key as your bedroom. I liked the view from the room to a small public garden with two large horse chestnut trees. If you want to have an ensuite bathroom you pay a bit more, £32 when I stayed. and have use of an ensuite twin or double room. When I stayed double or twin rooms cost £60 and the quad room £90. The two giraffes, made of scrap metal from motorbikes and cars by the artist, Helen Dennerly, stand proudly outside the Omni Centre. The sculpture was unveiled in July 2005.  I have spotted them several times when driving past but never taken the time to stop and look at them. I know it’s not always possible but I much prefer short visits to galleries and museums where you focus on a specific topic or artist. If I try to spend hours during a visit, I just feel that I can’t take it all in. I looked at the black and white works depicting the Fist World War. The were two pieces which made the biggest impression on me. The Card Players by Otto Dix which portrays 3 war veterans injured during action, one is playing with his mouth, another with his foot.  The other was “Death Marches” by Percy Smith, one of seven in the Dance of Death series of etchings from 1919. It shows the eager new infantry recruits marching four abreast with the ghostly figure of Death surveying its fresh batch of v

      Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh
I came across Dean Cemetery when was in Edinburgh earlier this week. It’s next to the Dean Gallery. I noticed a gate in to the cemetery from the car park at the Dean Gallery and decided to go and have a look around. I thought it was an amazing place. I didn’t have too much time to look around as I was meeting our son for lunch. I will visit it again soon and spend more time there. I must add the cemetery to my guide to Edinburgh off the beaten track. I did spot the grave of the architect Playfair, responsible for much of the new town in Edinburgh. I took photos of the of a couple of the most memorable gravestones. The photo above is of the grave of James Buchanan, founder of the Buchanan Institute in Glasgow. I did a Google search to find out more but drew a blank. Please fill me in if you know more about this. I wasn’t sure whose grave this is, as it has a few different names on it, but I really liked the three herons carved on it. Technorati Tags: Edinburgh,

      Edinburgh photos
I was in Edinburgh yesterday taking some more photos for my guide to Edinburgh: Off The Beaten Track. It was a lovely sunny day with slight breeze. My first stop was the Botanic Gardens. My favourite part was the Rock Garden. I also thought that the sun filtering through the copper beech tree was beautiful. Next I had a walk along the Water of Leith Walkway which stretches 12 miles through Edinburgh from Balerno to the coast at Leith. The photo is taken between Cannon Mills and Stockbridge. I think this is a fantastic walk, in some stretches you feel you are in the countryside, it’s so verdant and tranquil.

      Edinburgh: Off the Beaten Track
I’ve just uploading an article with some of my suggestions for seeing Edinburgh off the beaten track.  Edinburgh is a very interesting and beautiful city.  When you visit, try to make the time to discover more of the city. Portobello Beach Edinburgh

      Edinburgh For The Weekend...
The English Courtesan has been tagged for a meme by the delightfully Naughty Nina and you can read all about it in this post here! She hasn't done her homework yet, but do keep reading as that will follow on Wednesday...Following the success of Part 1 of ‘Luxurious Escapes with One’s Lover’, which featured Oxford, the English Courtesan is delighted to present Part 2, which features the tartan splendours of Edinburgh! Her thanks go to the lover who inspired this post who shall, as ever, remain nameless but much appreciated…Edinburgh is another of Olivia’s favourite cities for a scandalously saucy break with one’s paramour. With its romantic turreted castles haunted by lovelorn spectres, its sleeping volcano shrouded in mist and mystery, its dark medieval passage ways with their vestiges of both royal and pagan history, and its austere grey granite tenements which look as if they were carved from the rocks themselves, Edinburgh is the ultimate romantic escape for those who

Edinburgh Wine Festival May 24 2007
Edinburgh will host an international wine festival next month. There is a long association between the Scottish capital and French wines with claret being imported to Leith 800 years ago.  Napoleon blockaded the English fleet but permitted the flow of wine to continue from Bordeaux to Scotland. Photo by IJsendoorn  Do you think that it’s a good idea for Edinburgh to initiate another festival or is Edinburgh suffering from festival fatigue?

      Edinburgh Science Festival April 2 - 15 April 2007
This year’s Science Festival is subtitled, “Science you can handle”. Several events are aimed at kids. such as Dig up a Dinosaur, Unwrap a Mummy and Lego Robosports. The event take part at various venues including the Botanic Gardens. Our kids used to love going to the Science Festival and I think it’s a great day out for the Easter holidays which isn’t too weather dependent.

      Jet2 Avignon from Edinburgh
Jet2 will be flying from Edinburgh to Avignon, in the south of France, once a week on Saturdays, from the 23 June to 1 September. The cheapest flights cost around £80 return. It’s a pity that the timetable is so limited as I would like to visit that area but not during the Summer and maybe not for a seven days. Perhaps if the route is popular Jet2 may expand the timetable. I had a look at hotels in Avignon for the week 18 - 25 August and double rooms start from only 36 euros at the Bonsai hotel on the outskirts of Avignon, ideal for a budget stay. I thought that the Hotel St Roch looked charming, a 5 minute walk from the station with doubles from 50 euros per night. Hotel St Roch

      Craigentinny Marbles, Edinburgh
I came across the so called Craigentinny Marbles on my way to Portobello last weekend.  It was so weird to see this grand classical style mausoleum in the middle of streets of 1930s bungalows.  William Henry Miller, who owned the then Craigentiny estate wanted to be buried in the open fields rather than in a churchyard.  In 1848 that may have been the case, maybe now he may be reconsidering, thinking that a graveyard might now be a more appropriate setting than a housing estate.  The Miller Masoleum has bas relief sculptures of biblical scenes on 2 sides.  Miller requested that he was buried at a depth of 40 feet, prompting rumours about his gender due to a slim build, weak voice and lack of facial hair.  If he was buried so deeply there would be little opportunity for grave robbers to strike. Have you ever some across a similarly incongruous setting for a building?

      Portobello Beach Edinburgh
I was in Portobello, Edinburgh’s seaside on Saturday afternoon. I have to admit it was really windy and cold but the light and the colours were fantastic around 5pm when I took these photos. I think that it is easy to forget that Edinburgh is a coastal city but if you are in Edinburgh you should try to visit Portobello. There are several bus routes which travel from the city centre directly to Portobello.

Taste Festival comes to Edinburgh 7 - 10 June 2007
The Channel 4 Taste Festival is coming north of the Border for the first time in June 2007.  The four day festival wil showcase signature dishes from 15 restaurants and the produce of 80 suppliers of food and drink.  A similar event has run successfully in London for the last few years.  But don’t think it will be a tasty free for all, it is described as an upmarket event for lovers of good food and wine with entry by ticket and a price tag of £3 - £5 for sample dishes. The event will be held at the Meadows, a large park to the south of the city centre. There is a competition on the site where you can win a gastro weekend in London. If you’d like to come and stay in Edinburgh my recommendation is the 4 star Salisbury Green Hotel.  A double room is on offer through Laterooms from £84 a night. It’s a few  minutes walk away from the venue.  It is in the University of Edinburgh campus.  It is a fantastic old buildling with amazing wood panelling.  The rooms are

Edinburgh harbour apartments from only £40 per night
Laterooms have apartments at the harbour in Leith, Edinburgh from as little as £40 per night for midweek stays. The flats are modern with great views over the Firth of Forth. They are close the royal yatch Britiannia and Ocean Terminal which has a cinema, bars and restaurants. This is a really good offer as the price, based on 2 guests, includes free parking, free shuttle bus to the city centre.

Voluntary bed tax proposed in Edinburgh
There are discussions about implementing a voluntary bed tax in the Scottish capital. A mandatory bed tax has been ruled out but it is believed that if you ask in the right way and reassure visitors that the money raised will be spent on environmental and cultural initiatives some visitors will be happy to contribute. It is esimated that around three million pounds could be raised based a contribution of £1 per visitor. I am not sure how accommodation suppliers would feel about being the ones to collect the donation, it’s got to involve more work for them. I have the feeling that a sneaky way to get the donation would be that a suggested donation was included in the price and you had to opt out of paying. I don’t think that it is a good idea, a bed tax proposal was recently withdrawn in Venice. Visitors pay VAT on all their accommodation, meals and purchases and I think that in a very competitive travel market, Edinburgh could just be shooting itself in the foot. What d

Further calls to protect unique character of Edinburgh
I have been reading more and more recently about trying to preserve the distinctive and unique character of cities such as Edinburgh and Paris. A Skyline Project has been initiated in Edinburgh to assess the views and vistas of the city.  However the city council’s new headquarters are obscuring views down Waverly Valley. Oh dear, sounds like the council has put it’s foot in it here, granting itself planning permission for a buidling which contradicts its own guidlines.

      Edinburgh's Tartan Tat Royal Mile
The president of the Scottish Tartan Authority has hit out at the tourist tat shops spoiling the character of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, claiming that it resembles an eastern bazaar. He believes that tourists are being misled by £20 acrylic skirts masquarading as kilts. He believes that the Royal Mile should epitomise a quality ethos in this historic World Heritage Site. Well you could argue it is down to market forces, these shops can only survive if they can make a profit Could Edinburgh City Council or the Scottish parliament only allow “quality” shops in the Royal Mile? I am glad that at least issues like these are being discussed as I blogged about the the Champs Elysees recently. I always feel that many beautiful locations are spoiled by cheap commercialism and have wondered if anything would or could ever be done about it. I have to say that Venice is one of the worst examples I have visited. It is such a beautiful city overun every street bulging with tourist

      Racism Spreads to Edinburgh Shocker
Hot on the heels of the Big Brother racist "scandal", a real one has hit the headlines here in Scotland. Trevor Matthews, Chief Executive at Standard Life Plc, one of Europe's biggest insurance companies, had to issue a public apology for a racist remark he made at a company presentation on Monday.Matthews, an Australian, was talking about the company's unpopular pension revamp proposals when he was asked why the proposal had been hidden at the back of the company prospectus, replied, and I quote; "That's the nigger in the woodpile."Question: what's the difference between this and Jade Goody's comments?Answer: Jade Goody, while being as thick as mince, never actually said anything racist. Trevor Matthews is a top UK Executive, is intelligent, and thought it would be acceptable to use the N-word in front of a room full of people.Jade Goody called Shilpa Shetty, "Shilpa Poppadom", which is about as bad as the English referring to us Scots as Mr. Haggis, Jocks, Sweaty Socks, or The S

Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is being shown around an Edinburgh hospital
Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is being shown around an Edinburgh hospital. Towards the end of his visit, he is taken onto a ward of people with no obvious signs of injury. He greets the first patient and the chap replies: "Fair fa' you honest sonsie face, Great Chieftain e' the puddin' race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thaim, Weel are ye Wordy o'a grace, As lang's my arm." Tony, being somewhat confused, just grins, moves on to the next patient and greets him. He replies: "Some hae meat, and canna eat, And some hae nane that want it, But we hae meat and we can eat, And sae the Lord be thank it." Even more confused, but trying not to show it, Tony moves on to the third patient, who immediately begins to declaim, "Wee sleekit, cow'rin, tim'rous beastie, O, what a panic's in thy breastie! Thou need na start awa sae hasty, Wi bickering brattle!" Alarmed, Tony turns to the doctor accompanying him and demands an explanation: "What sort of ward is this, a me
