Tall Firs Too Old to Die Young Ecstatic Peace
By Chris Brunelle The influence of the 90s is still going strong with Tall Firs. These guys make me think of the last few Pavement records, if Malkmus stuck with the guitar and let his friend Thurston take over the vocal duties. The band is made up of indie rock fans and, as you’ll notice at [...]

      #830: Stumbling Upon The Ecstatic
I found out that someone to whom I have only written letters through work but have never seen even once or spoken to on the telephone has liver cancer and will die shortly. He is ninety-six years old, so death really is not the craziest thing that could happen to him at this point, and I would not know who he was without his file, a confirmed street address, and the photograph that will accompany his obituary, and yet I feel like weeping.I have the same feeling now that I had when I heard John McDermott sing "Danny Boy" with The Chieftains at a concert I went to in Cosmopolis in 1994.My fiancé at the time, Phil, took me to see them play, and just before intermission, John McDermott sang an a cappella version of "Danny Boy" that rent my heart into a thousand wilted pieces. To this day, I do not know why I had such a reaction to his clear tenor as it resonated up to my second balcony, front row seat, and I still do not know the words to that song or the history behind it, but on

Mass Shivers - Ecstatic Eyes Glow Glossy
Chicago's Mass Shivers dish out some seriously spazzy and infectious indie rock on their latest album Ecstatic Eyes Glow Glossy. It merges the riffage and flaunting excesses of classic rock with the weirdo experimentalism of modern bands like Animal Collective to make something exciting and completely unpredictable. There is also a sort of organic tribal energy that just pours out from the songs on Ecstatic Eyes Glow Glossy. It makes me think of !!! without the drum machines or maybe The Eternals. You know, danceable in a freaky and funky kind of way.Ecstatic Eyes Glow Glossy is an ambitious and demanding album but at under 29 minutes in length, easily digestible in a single setting even though you may find yourself dizzy and trying to regain equilibrium afterwards. This is recommended listening and is available now from our pals over at Sickroom Records. Ecstatic Improvisation and Key Lime Pie
Last night we experienced a memorable, incendiary performance by the Archie Shepp quartet at  Iridium in NYC.  In my impressionistic (read: untrained and unrestrained) manner, I put up a quick sketch of the band’s first set over at newcritics. A genius sax player, informed by a history that includes blues, avant garde jazz (a short but memorable phase), and a clear devotion to music that’s unmistakably African and African-American, Archie Shepp belongs in his own original category. Go peek, too, at Jason Chervokas’ fine tribute to the great, beloved jazz drummer, Max Roach, to whom Archie was paying his own tribute last night.  Since you’re there (or even if you aren’t—I mean, yet) scroll through Tom Watson’s merry crew live-blogging of the TV show, “Mad Men.” Most jazz clubs set an entrance fee and then, often, a two-drink minimum. Alcohol  affects me like poison, inflicting an instant, liquid migraine. So on occasion, I’ve spent ten d

      Four Tet - Everything Ecstatic
Between the work of his pioneering band Fridge and the early Four Tet albums, Kieran Hebden did more than help invent "folktronica"; like all artists worth their salt he pushed the boundaries of the form before they were even drawn. Ecstatic is a fiercely rhythmic rollercoaster ride. The opening track, "A Joy," is a bass-heavy number that updates "No More Mosquitoes" from 2001's Pause. The staggered, double drum kit sound on the deliriously woozy, aptly titled "Smile Around the Face," is what the Boredoms might sound like in collaboration with Fraggle rock . That sounds ridiculous but it's true. Elsewhere, chimes, gongs, bells and whistles enliven this poppy, woozy electronic record. You might even call the whole thing mystical, especially when lost inside the eight minute "Sleep, Eat Food, Have Visions."

Wooden Wand: James & The Quiet (Ecstatic Peace!)
The prolific James Jackson Toth, working under the nom-de-tune Wooden Wand has released some 20-plus albums over a handful of years. However, Toth considers James & The Quiet the third proper Wooden Wand full length. While each release has explored a psychedelic-folk wonderland, this album is far and away one of the most concisely focused and downright catchy recordings in the WW oeuvre. “I wanted it to be an un-weird record,” Toth says. The road-weary songwriter had been spending a lot of time with old Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings records, and wanted to transcend the 'psychedelic' connotations he'd been pegged with since his days fronting The Vanishing Voice. He wanted to do what Elvis Costello did on Imperial Bedroom or Leonard Cohen did on I'm Your Man - he wanted to not give the people what they wanted but instead endeavor to follow his muse and create something different.Wooden Wand Band Members: James Jackson Toth - Vocals + Guitar + BassJessica Toth - Vocal

Today sucks. It should not. I should be ecstatic. I got a very encouraging letter from an agent yesterday. Not only did she NOT say "No" but gave me a very firm "Maybe". She asked a few questions about the book and my focus which seems to be the $24,000 question. I thought it was rather self evident but it is not. I get that question a lot. Anyway, I am unhappy because I found out today that n ot only will the IRS not give me a Earned Income Credit they are taking the rest of my tax rebate for bills my husband owed before we were married. This really sucks because my sons birthday is Friday. Im flat broke. That makes me sad.Not to mention Im hungry. They dont call us Starving Writers for nothing. So, Im going to work on this book some more today and drink a lot of water and pretend that Im just on a diet.

Greens ecstatic after getting 26% of London North Centre Vote
It's very likely that if the environment stays as a top issue going into the next campaign, the Greens will have a shot at taking a few seats, probably from more left-leaning ridings. I have a feeling that the NDP's environment voters will lose quite a bit of ground to the Greens next election. The only "real" alternative to the two big parties (and their perceived weakness on this issue) was the NDP before. Voting Green was out of protest. Layton may have won more seats for the party last time around, but their popular vote rose only 2%. That could easily be lost, and then some. What could happen is that the Greens get a handful of seats, and the NDP lose a handful to the Liberals. And to imagine, just a few months ago we were talking about the collapse of the Liberal party. Now it's the NDP that seems most endangered.
