      Clinton Ad Quotes "Top Economist"
Clinton was for economists before she was against them. As I mentioned yesterday, in the course of pushing her gas-tax holiday, Yale and Wellesley educated anti-elitist Hillary Clinton dismissed economists’ critiques of her plan by saying, “I’m not going to put my lot in with economists.” Except, of course, when she does. . . . Take, for example, this February campaign ad touting the Clinton plan for universal health care: In case you didn’t catch that, the voiceover said: Now she’s the only candidate for president with a plan to provide health care for every American. A top economist calls Hillary’s plan the difference between achieving universal health coverage – and falling far short. And the graphic on screen reads: "…the difference between achieving universal heal

Viet Nam suffering from global inflation, says economist
The current trend of escalating inflation in Viet Nam is contingent upon global factors and governmental leaders must adjust their economic policies to mitigate its effects, a economist has said. Consumer prices rose 21.4% in April, the fastest pace since at least 1992, as surging global demand for commodities drove up the cost of food. Inflation was the steepest since Vietnam was struggling to

Indonesia's economy under threat of high external inflation: economist
The Indonesian economy is expected to be under a threat of high external inflation this year due to a surge in the global crude and food prices, an economist said. The threat had been noticeable now following a recent increase in the prices of several food commodities in the global market, Martin Pangabean of state-owned Bank Mandiri said in an "Economic Outlook 2008" report here on Tuesday. "Countries in all parts of the world, except Indonesia, saw their year-on-year inflation rate in February 2008 climbing by five- to ten-fold from a year earlier," he said. Domestic inflation pressures would be caused by at least three factors -- global food prices, the rupiah`s exchange rate against the dollar, and the pressures of global crude price spiral on the state budget, he noted. US economist calls financial crisis worst since 1930s
The current financial crisis is the worst the world has seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s and the US Federal Reserve move to cut interest rates will not make much difference, the Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said on Wednesday. "It will have some impact - it will do a little bit to stem the blood - but it's not addressing the fundamental problems underlying the collapse of the financial sector," Joseph said. Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize in economics in 2001, is a former chief of the World Bank and chaired former US president Bill Clinton's council of economic advisers. He is in New Zealand on a lecture tour. He said the Federal Reserve's move to cut its funds rate by three-quarters of a percentage point was "just trying to ease the economy down rather

New-Home Slowdown Is Good News, Even To NAHB Chief Economist
The pace of new-home construction in November dropped to the lowest level in 14 years. And that's good news, even to David Seirs, Chief Economist for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). David Seirs says he's somewhat pleased because builders cannot reduce their inventories of unsold homes unless they cut production, particularly in light of weak demand and rising competition from existing home sellers. "The builders are behaving appropriately at this point," Seiders said. "I would have liked to see the production decline start earlier than it did. But since the beginning of 2007, production has been falling rapidly." The pace of housing starts fell 3.7% in November from a month earlier, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.187 million, and it dropped 24% from November, 2006. Building permits, an indicator of future home construction, fell 24.6% from November, 2006, to an annual rate of 1.152 million. With buyer activity down and their stock

Inflation in S'pore to taper off as growth slows: economist
Conrad Tan 519 words 11 December 2007 Business Times Singapore English (c) 2007 Singapore Press Holdings Limited He blames energy prices for recent surge in inflation (SINGAPORE) The recent surge in the pace of inflation here is mostly due to a sharp increase in energy prices and is unlikely to last as economic growth slows next year, a senior economist maintained yesterday. Meanwhile, Asian economies still have a lot of tools at their disposal to keep their economies afloat even if growth in the US slows down more than expected, said Jan Lambregts, head of research in Asia for Rabobank International. 'In my mind there is no inflation problem' for Singapore, he said. Although inflation has been rising everywhere, 'I'm not pessimistic when it comes to this because the MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) already a couple of years ago adopted a tightening stance, so they were very early to the game when it came to fighting inflation,' he said. 'Energy prices are mainly to bl

"Reading The Economist is like having an extra brain."
That is the way I describe the British newsweekly to those who stagger through life blindly without it. I'm not saying that I read every article on the political situation in Madagascar or the price of tea in China. Rather I let the big wave of crisply written information crash over me, then pick out the brightest shells it leaves behind. The magazine has no peer. There is no more humbling experience, as an American, than to look at the covers of Time and Newsweek and see the moronic pabulum we spoon-feed ourselves, then contrast it with the hearty, nourishing British fare.[...]Space doesn't permit to sufficiently sing The Economist's praises....And while every basement Web master with an opinion builds a mini cult of self, or tries to, the stories in The Economist, sharp and smart though they be, are all unsigned. ~ N.S. in his October 24 columnSubscribe. Now. And then make time to read it.

Chances of US recession less than 50%: Top economist
Bryan Lee315 words1 November 2007Straits TimesEnglish(c) 2007 Singapore Press Holdings Limited THE United States economy might have slowed dramatically under the weight of its mortgage crisis, but the chance of a recession there is well under 50 per cent, a top economist says.Former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief economist Kenneth Rogoff said yesterday that credit market woes caused by mortgages given to risky US borrowers are being resolved. But he feels the problem will linger longer in Europe, which ironically has taken the brunt of the US sub-prime mortgage fallout. 'Mr Greenspan's going around saying that the chance for a US recession is almost 50:50 now,' said Dr Rogoff, referring to former US central banker Alan Greenspan. 'I think the odds are considerably less than that,' Dr Rogoff noted. While there are uncertainties about the extent of the sub-prime problem, 'on the whole, it's getting worked out', he said. He was answering questions from the floor after giv

What the Psychologists and Economist say about Money and Hapiness...
Here are some excerpts from a great Newsweek article recently:By Sharon BegleyNewsweek Web ExclusiveUpdated: 8:41 PM ET Oct 14, 2007"Psychologists have spent decades studying the relation between wealth and happiness," writes Harvard University psychologist Daniel Gilbert in his best-selling "Stumbling on Happiness," "and they have generally concluded that wealth increases human happiness when it lifts people out of abject poverty and into the middle class but that it does little to increase happiness thereafter."If money doesn't buy happiness, what does? Grandma was right when she told you to value health and friends, not money and stuff. Or as Diener and Seligman put it, once your basic needs are met "differences in well-being are less frequently due to income, and are more frequently due to factors such as social relationships and enjoyment at work."If more money doesn't buy more happiness, then the behavior of most Americans looks downright insane, as we work harder and longer, d

Are Voters Irrational: An Interview With Economist Bryan Caplan
The topic below was originally posted in my blog, the Intrepid Liberal Journal as well as The Peace Tree, the Independent Bloggers Alliance and Worldwide Sawdust.People across the political spectrum routinely question the senses, intelligence and values of their fellow voters. A decade ago conservatives chafed, as President Bill Clinton remained popular in spite of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. In recent years liberals like myself seethed while Republicans maintained one-party dominance in spite of their incompetence and criminal policies. They’re also citizens who challenge the wisdom of any voter who supports the two-party duopoly.Bryan Caplan, an economist at George Mason University and co-editor of EconLog challenges the rationality of voters with his book, The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies (Princeton University Press). Caplan, a libertarian, contends that democracies fail because of voters themselves rather than favorite scapegoats such as specia

An economist at the Institute for Development Economy and Finance (Indef) has explained that indications of a repeat financial crisis in Indonesia are growing stronger.Iman Sugema, Indef economist, said the possibility of a financial crisis may happen at any time. However, this time the crisis' pattern and mechanism are a little different from that of 10 years ago.“The crisis that may happen is different. There is one similarity, there will be capital flights,” said Iman during Indef's 2007 Mid-Year Analysis entitled 'Ten years of Crisis, Short-Term Funds Countercurrent Threat' in Century Atlet Hotel, Jakarta. He emphasized that the potential of a second economic crisis potential was even larger compared to the first crisis, in 1997.

Govt should remain able to control Central Bank: economist
Bank Indonesia (BI or the central bank)`s independence as the country`s monetary authority is not without limit in the sense that the government should still have power to control it, a senior economist said. BI should also not engage in activities that lie outside the area of its main authority such as procurement of materials for the printing of banknotes and coins, Dr Sri Edi Swasono said here Monday. He called on House of Representatives (DPR) members in particular not to leave everything connected with the Indonesian currency to BI and also refuted the notion that the monetary sector was BI`s exclusive business and the fiscal sector the government`s.

By Tony Blair - What I've learned - The EconomistExcerpt:"TEN years ago, if you had told me I would spend a significant part of my premiership on foreign policy, I would have been surprised, a little shocked and probably, politically, somewhat alarmed. Even today, we all run for office concentrating on domestic issues. "Foreign" policy rarely wins votes, and can easily lose them. Yet nowadays the reality is increasingly that we are obliged as leaders to think, work and act internationally."http://www.economist.com/opinion/displayStory.cfm?story_id=9257593Tony BlairAlex

Govt should control private sector`s foreign debt : economist
The government must keep a watch on and control foreign loans obtained by the private sector so as to prevent the Indonesian economy from plunging into a crisis like the one in 1997, an economist said. "The government should control private borrowing from foreign parties lest it give rise to foreign currency speculation that can lead to permanent destabilization," Hendrawan Supartikno, an economist with Tim Ekonomi Bangkit (TIB), a private economic research organization, said here Monday. In a similar vein, economic observer Aviliani said the government should tightly control private foreign debt. This was necessary as Indonesia`s economic fundamentals were still weak. "The continuing improvement in our export performance cannot yet be considered a strong economic fundamental as long as our income from exports are not enough to cover our debt," he said.

AGLOCO was also discussed in `The Economist Magazine’s` new Technology Quarterly Edition
AGLOCO had another record week of new Member signups last week, and we know that 100% of that is due to AGLOCO Member activity. According to Google more web pages are talking about AGLOCO (2,000,000+) than Kobe Bryant or Queen Victoria, and we are now creeping up on Lindsay Lohan and David Beckham.AGLOCO was also discussed in the Economist Magazine’s new Technology Quarterly Edition. The article sub-heading reads “Online Advertising: New business models let communities of internet users control how their personal information is bought and sold.” The article discusses how Google users are not getting Google services for free, but rather how users trade personal information to Google in exchange for their services … and that Internet users are only now starting to realize their own value. Apparently, other companies are starting to realize that this is not a trivial issue (and AGLOCO’s privacy policy is very strict about not sharing this information). On another topic, I’ve se

The Economist: Censorship and the internet - Whose tube? - For Thais and Turks, shielding a revered figure from cyber-insults proves trickyExcerpt:"AT FIRST sight, anyway, it seems like one more case of a clumsy, authoritarian government being wrong-footed by nimble creatures from cyberspace who acknowledge no borders and can leap effortlessly over almost any obstacle. YouTube, the website that dominates the market in user-generated, online videos (or in plain language, a place where almost anybody can post a film about almost anything) has been blocked by Thailand's military-backed government. The ban was imposed in a fit of indignation over a 44-second clip that mocked the country's monarch. It was a crude bit of work, showing King Bhumibol Adulyadej with feet over his face and mouth, an image certain to offend Thai Buddhists."http://www.economist.com/world/international/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9013586Alex

How much do parents really matter? How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime? These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist
