Israel at 60 is as prosperous as it has ever been, but not without challengesThis weekend Israel celebrates its 60th year of independence. Since 14.5.1948 this small country in the heart of the Middle East has turned from an agricultural based economy into a full blown economic wonder and success story.I chose to review Israel economic success through this list of little known facts and figures which, unfortunately, hardly ever make it to the news. The list will be divided in to Geography and Government, Economic Review, High-Tech Industry, Education, the Stock Market and Challenges.Geography and Government1. Israel has a very small land area of approximately 8,500 sq. miles (vs. 3,794,100 sq. miles of the US).2. Israel is a representative democracy with a parliamentary system.3. Israel’
Business Times - 09 May 2008 Test of Singapore's economic resilience MUCH has been written about the nature of the beast, about whether it's shaped like a U, V, L or even W. We're talking of course about the impending - or, as oracles like former US Federal Reserve chief Alan Greenspan and Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett contend, the ongoing - US recession. What's clear is that the world's largest economy, hammered by a massive financial crisis that has reverberated across the globe and further weakened by ever-rising oil prices, is on the ropes. And the impact of a US economy brought to its knees by a recession, whatever the shape, is bound to shake national economies everywhere. Singapore awaits with concern, but also a measure of quiet assurance. It's a beast we've faced before, thi

So far, every picture that Pat or I have taken since we started going the digital route underwater has been with the onboard flash or with available light. We both now have Canon G9 camera setups and decided that we'll take the opportunity of the stimulus windfall to pick up the Ikelite strobe package linked here:This strobe isn't a high end strobe package, but it packs a fair punch for the price and might be ideal for our use. I'd been curious about it, as it offers a decent amount of power for macro and nearby pictures, say to about 3-4 feet, for the price. It just came out in the last couple of months so there's not a lot of them out there just yet, but a customer the other week had one and is quite happy with it so far. It's made to be compatible with most of the point and shoot ca
According to Business Week's Peter Coy, the current economic slowdown is impacting men more than women due to the nature of their jobs. So what does this mean for male breadwinners in the future? From the article:From last November through this April, American women aged 20 and up gained nearly 300,000 jobs, according to the household survey of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). At the same time, American men lost nearly 700,000 jobs. You might even say American men are in recession, and American women are not. What's going on? Simply put, men have the misfortune of being concentrated in the two sectors that are doing the worst: manufacturing and construction. Women are concentrated in sectors that are still growing, such as education and health care. This situation is hardly good n

With all the doom and gloom talk about the current (or looming, depending on your view) economic recession and housing bubble, I thought it would be nice to talk about some of the benefits that should be realized by these otherwise negative events for a change. An economic recession is not a joyous time for most people, as jobs and wages are cut and belts are tightened, but there are some positives. The housing bubble, for one, should be looked at as an overall good thing for many people who were priced out of the market. In many parts of the U.S., homes were just flat out getting too expensive; now that they have dropped by double digit percentages in most areas, they are becoming more affordable. Obviously this isn’t necessarily a good thing for current homeowners, but it is certainly

My wife just got out of the hospital after a 3 week stay for a blood clot in her left leg. It was a major health scare and we're just thankful that she made it through alive. Because of her long hospital stay, however, we will have to deplete part of our emergency fund to pay all the bills. Luckily we had good insurance and we'll only end up paying about $2000 of a total bill that will probably be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. For us, finding a way t

Professor Duy released the March U of O Index of Economic Indicators this week and things aren’t improving. The University of Oregon Index of Economic Indicators™ dropped sharply in March, falling 0.7 percent to 101.9 (1997=100). Only two indicators—the interest rate spread and the weight-distance tax collected—improved. Remaining indicators held roughly steady or deteriorated. The index continues to decline at a rate consistent with weak economic growth and a high possibility of recession. Still, even if a technical recession is avoided, continued strains on household finances suggest a prolonged period of economic weakness.Click on any graph for a better image. As a general rule of thumb, a decline of 3.5 percent over six months, coupled with a decline in more than h

President Bush stated that American are in a "tough economic period" after several reports were released on Friday that indicated weakness in the economy. The economy lost more American jobs for the fourth straight month in a row, and total economic growth is near zero here in America.
During the Clinton administration, all we heard about was how great the economy supposedly was. The record low unemployment rates were always one of the figures touted.Yet, as soon as George W Bush became President, all of a sudden we started playing by a different set of rules. In the fall of 1996, Slick Willy was running for reelection on a so-called nirvana economy, with an unemployment rate of 5.9%. Yet, today, despite all the oil shocks and credit crunches, our current National unemployment rate sits at at a rate of 4.95%. That is just shy of a full percentage point better than nirvana. Despite all of the doom and gloom, the Bush economy is not in a recession. In fact, the Bush economy has grown each month that his economic plan has been in effect-77 in a row. If you compare the averag
May 3 - President George W. Bush said Americans are ``facing a tough economic period'' after reports this week showed the economy lost jobs for a fourth straight month and economic growth was close to a standstill. ``My administration has been clear and candid on the state of the economy,'' Bush said today in his weekly radio address. ``We saw the economic slowdown coming, we were up front about these concerns with the American people, and we've been taking decisive action.'' Payrolls shrank by 20,000 workers last month, following a revised 81,000 drop in March, the Labor Department said yesterday. The same day, the Federal Reserve, seeking to prevent a deeper slowdown, announced fresh measures to coax banks into lending. ``I'm confident we can weat

Despite the seemingly good news that the U.S. has avoided a technical recession, there's actually a bit more to it than that. From a story by BusinessWeek's Peter Coy:...the cut in the federal funds rate they announced on Apr. 30—a quarter-point, to 2%— probably won't be enough. Senior U.S. economist Paul Ashworth of London-based Capital Economics predicts the Fed will be forced to cut the funds rate to 1% by summer's end. The U.S. economy remains in dire need of aid, and the financial system, while no longer in flames as it seemed to be a couple months ago, is still smoldering. At the same time, inflation, aside from food and energy, is more a theoretical threat than a real one. Core prices rose just 2% from the first quarter of 2007 through the first quarter of 2008, going by the Fe

Malaysia March CPI hit a 13-month high of 2.8% y/y as compared to a 2.7% rise in February, and slightly lower than the median f/c of 3.0%. S/adj, the CPI for March was unchanged from Feb. The increase in March prices was mainly due to steeper prices of food and nonalcoholic drinks, which rose 4.9% y/y, for alcoholic beverages and tobacco prices rose 9.0% y/y.Housing, water, electricity and fuels, which is the second-largest component in the CPI, rose a modest 1.3% y/y. Malaysian inflation has crept up since late last year but remains among the lowest in South East Asia, thanks largely to price controls on essential goods such as flour and cooking oil. Core inflation also looks reasonably stable on the month, at just over 2% thus allowing the central bank to leave rates unchanged at 3.5% ne

A reader asked a question about official inflation statistics. Basically, he articulated a widely held belief that the Government's official method of inflation failed to report the true level of inflation in the UK. There are a number of explanations why people may feel 'actual inflation' is much higher than 'official inflation'. Some of this represents the way inflation is calculated. Other

The Bush administration reacted boldly to the news that wholesale prices increased by 1.1 percent last month, the second largest increase in 33 years.“Our economy is not experiencing inflation,” said chief economic spokesperson Buck Uberalles, “Like melting polar ice caps, our temporary economic downtown, and recent violence in Iraq, this is an anomalous spike that people are trying to turn into a crisis for political advantage.”Uberalles acknowledged that the inflation spike, however temporary, did require government action to alleviate any short-lived suffering.“Effective immediately,” he announced, “Supermarkets will begin passing out magnifying glasses and tweezers so that families will be able to more efficiently open increasingly downsized items like cereal boxes, candy

I’ve written about the economic stimulus rebate program a few times on my site, but I continue to receive a substantial amount of stimulus questions in the comments of the articles I have written and via e-mail. Because I have received a lot of questions, I thought it would be good to put the majority [...]
With business expanding, Captain Hackfeld decided to improve his sources of supply, seek new lines, and strengthen his connections. Since this required a two-year trip to Europe, he left his young partner Pflueger in complete charge. The business then consisted of two stores, the agency for the two sugar plantations, and the commercial agency of the Russian government, an excellent business connection which Dr. Wood had recently turned over to the company. At the close of the fiscal year on June 30, 1855 the youthful manager struck off the first statement covering the business. Assets had climbed to $93,711. Liabilities were $48,059, leaving a "balance to net capital" of $45,652. The assets included a dwelling house on Fort Street valued at $3,514. The amount invested in the "Upper Store"
Remember that the stock market will show signs of bottoming well before every bit of bad economic news is wrung from the headlines. These milestones won’t be obvious or appear at once, and keep in mind that just because stocks stop going down doesn’t mean prices will roar to new records. The damage to the [...]
The economy is undoubtedly at a critical turning point. Let’s take some time to make a reasonable attempt to understand what has happened and what is happening now, and try, humbly and sincerely, to decipher what is next on tap for the economy and markets.
First, for a little macro background:
1. In 2007, the United [...]

Unfortunately, the more successful you are, the more administrative tasks you have; the more time you spend on administrative tasks, the less time you have to generate new revenue.
It’s a vicious, vicious cycle.
So what’s a business owner [...]

There is a lyric by Rage Against the Machine from a song called New Millennium Homes that rings true in our current political climate. Zach de la Rocha sings, "Hungry people don't stay hungry for long." The people of Haiti, Bangladesh and countries across Africa unknowingly echoed this sentiment in the past few weeks. Violence broke out as starving people went in search of food. World Bank President Robert Zoellick noted on cnn.com that:"In just two months," Zoellick said in his speech, "rice prices have skyrocketed to near historical levels, rising by around 75 percent globally and more in some markets, with more likely to come. In Bangladesh, a 2-kilogram bag of rice ... now consumes about half of the daily income of a poor family."The increase worldwide has

I've been following the ongoing discussion between publius at Obsidian Wings and Megan McArdle (and their respective commenters) with some interest. The question at issue is why working class whites not only vote Republican in heavy numbers but also passionately support Republican economic policies even though those economic policies would seem to be against their self-interest. As Megan points out, this question also runs in the other direction: why do so many wealthy Democrats so passionately support Democrat economic policies. For publius, the answer is that the resentment and anger stirred up in the culture wars boils over into economic policies such that the response becomes almost reflexive. In other words: if liberals like it, it must be bad and evil. (I note that publius does not be
In response to the nationwide economic downturn caused by the housing and credit crisis, members of the House Financial Services Committee today introduced legislation to combat the unprecedented rise in foreclosures, and the associated impact on cities and states.
The legislation first announced by Chairman Barney Frank in March, will be divided into two measures: H.R. [...]
