      3. >> WHAT IS ECOLOGY ? .
Ecology is the branch of biological science concerned with the relationships and interactions between living organisms and their surroundings or environment. The term ecology was coined by combining two greek words, oikos (meaning house) and logos (meaning 'the study of ) to denote such relationships between the organisms and their environment ..... It is mainly the study relations between organis

Defense mechanisms in Populus nigra as a response to invertebrate herbivory This project will be part of an interdisciplinary study that aims to unravel the ecology of tree-herbivore interactions with the help of biochemical and molecular techniques. We want to investigate the mechanisms of chemical defense in Populus nigra in response to damage by insect herbivores. Populus nigra produces four major groups of metabolites that appear to be involved in defense: volatile terpenoids, green leaf volatiles, phenolic glycosides, and condensed tannins. These compounds occur either constitutively in P. nigra or are induced by damaging agents such as insect herbivores. In our group we are especially interested in the inducible plant defenses and we study them both on the phenotypic as well as on th

      The Ecology Of Work
I ENVIRONMENTALISTS SEE THE ASPHALTING of the country as a sin against the world of nature, but we should also see in it a kind of damage that has been done to humans, for what precedes environmental degradation is the debasement of the human world. I would go so far as to say that there is no solution for environmental destruction that isn’t first a healing of the damage that has been done to the human community. As I argued in the first part of this essay, the damage to the human world has been done through work, through our jobs, and through the world of money. We are not the creators of our own world; we merely perform functions in a system into which we were born. The most destructive aspect of our jobs is that in them we are mere “functionaries,” to borrow Josef Pieper’s term. Just as important, we have a function outside of work: consumption. Money in hand, we go into the market to buy the goods we no longer know how to make (we don’t even know how to grow and preserve

EA Sports’ SimCity can Teach you Ecology with Entertainment
We are all aware of the many PC games we have played at a time. EASports has been known to provide good games in the form of role-playing and arcade to which has made most people stuck in the computers and playing these games individually or online. But if there is one game that people fail to connect with the entire green movement and ecology issues we have today, there is a game which may be familiar to us that we have failed to recognize. SimCity is a simulation role playing game that places us a mayor of certain towns. While our immediate goal is to make sure that we build and develop regions into rural or urban classes of society, there are also the qualms of having to adhere towards healthy living. As mayor, it is more than just peace and order, pollution, beautification and social interaction. There are in-game options that allow us to practice our going green beliefs. Waste management and pollution are some of the usual problems the mayor of SimCity has to deal with. Add to

      An Explosion Called Ecology Disaster
Ecology is something that we all know through education and from current events. Taken as a whole, we only know of certain components such as global warming, greenhouse gases, pollution and climate change. The world is having a hard time focusing on only one of these areas. Add to this that such concentration has not done any good. Progress has been slow and if this keeps up, another bomb similar to that atomic bomb that destroyed Japan some centuries ago will come back in the form of an ecological disaster which we have all been talking about. We are all doing our part. But the efforts have not been realized. Hopefully people would realize that the issue may be green but it is not a laughing matter. We just have to thrive harder to meet goals and turn things around to avoid global disaster. Ecology camp in Taiping, Kuala Sepetang and Gua Temperung
A few weeks back Mr. Goh called me. He asked me if I was interested in joining him and his team for a few days out to Taiping, Kuala Sepetang and Gua Temperung caves. He had organised an ecology camp (in fact it’s more like a few days to study the ecology in this area) a group of 160 students and teachers from the Green Garden International School. Not surprisingly then students were enthusiastic about the idea to go into the Gua Temperung cave or in mangrove swamps and the charcoal factory. It was very well organised, despite that the group had to stay in two different hotels. This was in no way a problem in organising activities. Food was excellent, we had a couple of meals in the Soon Lee Restaurant in Taiping, which turned out to be an excellent example of Chinese Malaysian food. The mangrove forest hold quite a few secrets for the students and Mr. Chuah, owner of one of the charcoal factories was keeping the eyes of the students focused on the charcoal business which turned

what does Deep Ecology even mean?
happy sunday… once again… time is so weird… here these two posts are back to back but separated by a week… an objective number of seconds… (604,800) but sometimes it can feel like a month… and sometimes it can feel like a day… this is what i wanted to write today… an question from the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess… “The essence of deep ecology is to keep asking more searching questions about human life, society, and Nature as in the Western philosphical tradition of Socrates…. For example, we need to ask questions like, Why do we think that economic growth and high levels of consumption are so important? The conventional answer would be to point to the economic consequences of not having economic growth. But in deep ecology, we ask whether the present society fulfills basic human needs like love and security and access to nature and, in so doing, we question our society’s underlying assumptions. We

      The ecology of golf
When one thinks of a golf course, it often conjures the image of a benign oasis. However, over the years, there's been a greater consciousness of golf's impact to the environment. Specifically, it's impact on water resources, species biodiversity, and the use of pesticides. After doing a little research, I was encouraged to see that there has been a shift to the use of reclaimed water and, depending on the habitat the course is replacing, occasionally an increase in biodiversity. However, all courses are not made the same and their impact is highly dependant on how they're managed. The following video on R&A's website, called The Open Road to Sustainability, recounts efforts to maintain the sustainability of the Royal Liverpool Golf Course. However, R&A is golf's world rules and development body and organizer of The Open Championship, so take it for what it's worth.
