BRISBANE, Australia, March 6, 2008 - Cisco® today announced the results of a study on energy-saving initiatives at its annual Australia and New Zealand Networkers conference. The study highlighted how several Australian-first programs introduced by Cisco at Networkers 2007 produced significant reductions in the impact of the conference on the environment. The research was coordinated by the corporate social responsibility advisory firm Positive Outcomes, under commission from Cisco and supported by the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC), where Networkers was held in September 2007. The systematic study was an Australian first for the information technology industry. Cisco's Australia and New Zealand managing director, Les Williamson, said; "Clearly, there is an imperative

It's becoming very popular to be eco friendly and people are looking for any way they can do it that helps the environment without putting a hole in their pocketbooks. If you're an outdoor gardening enthusiasts we suggest looking into the possibility of solar garden lighting.Overall it won't drop your energy bill by a large margin, but it's an excellent starting point. Once you're used to that idea you may even expand into other energy efficient lighting options for your home. But that's another topic.Solar garden lights are convenient as well as economical. Since they don't require electricity you don't have to run miles of cable from your house to each light, or try to figure out a way to disguise your cables so they don't interrupt the natural beauty of your garden. Solar lighting is co
It seems that a lot of companies are re-launching their product ranges and inventions as eco-friendly, or environmentally friendly. Everyones jumping on the green bandwagon in 2007. A lot of firms have renamed all sorts of products eco-this or eco-that. I'm planning this year to highlight various companies and products that have decided to put an eco in front of their name.Ecosmart is an Australian supplier of solar powered hot water systems, claim to provide an environmentally friendly hot water solution for the home. Ecosmart have reproduced a graph (see above) showing the tonnes of CO2 emissions produced each year by an average electric water heater system, compared to emissions produced by solar powered water heating systems. Ecosmart also claim that Australia is one of the worst poll

We should all be thinking more about the environment more everyday and it's great to see that companies like Sony are thinking this way with their new Eco Friendly Wind-Up Sony Digital Camera, the "ODO Twirl N Take" pictured above.
This concept camera (yes its all in the mind at this time) lets you just spin the wheel for around 15 seconds to get enough juice to take a single photograph. Now although that's not long it's a fantastic idea to just spin the wheel for 15 seconds everytime before you take a photo.
That's as long as you do not need two photos within 15 seconds. If you look at the photo you can see the camera is installed in the handle and if you wish to see your photos you have to connect the camera to a computer.
So to improve this concept lets see an LCD in the handle, but then I guess that means another spin of the wheel.

Old beer and wine bottles have been used for small parts of buildings, especially in building that are built from recycled or eco friendly materials.
Well here a brewery Heineken was well ahead of any eco friendly or green group. These beer bricks came about when Heineken was visiting the Caribbean islands, he saw how there was a problem with discarded bottles on the beaches, yet there was a substantial lack of building supplies. He could alleviate both problems in one hit, by introducing the beer brick.
However for one reason of another this idea never came into fruition with only 10,000 beer bricks being made. Like many innovators Heineken must have just been too far ahead for his own good.

An organization named Green Karat certifies gold as green or eco friendly. The make sure that gold was mined not under war, thru fair labor, and do as less harm to the environment as possible.
They do this by retraining miners into non-mining livelihoods, advocating for the recycling of precious metals. Most of it is sitting in bank vaults anyways! Gold mining is faulted with deforestation, soil erosion into streams. The industry uses chemicals, especially mercury to separate gold from rock. Its harms both its workers and the surrounding ecosystem as well.
They also oppose diamond mining because of the unconscionable human and ecological sacrifice as seen in the hit film “Blood Diamond” which stars Leonardo DiCaprio. As that movie showed the Diamond industry has financed the activities of various rebel groups who have practically enslaved, tortured, killed, and maimed miner workers, and their communities. (more…)

Now being eco friendly does not mean that it finishes when you die. After all a conventional cremation uses enormous amounts of energy and can lead to some other undesirable elements being released into the atmosphere, like mercury that comes from dental fillings.
In the UK some crematoriums are limiting the amount of days that they work on, in order to cut back. So what is the alternative?
Its called Resomation and it use water instead of heat, by using a naturally occurring alkaline, the process quickly breaks the body down into a white bio ash. The body releases the amino acids, sugars and salts, until there are only some traces of bone, which is then crushed into the ash.
The estimated cost of this process is around $600.

There is a issue developing in Calvert County, Md. Where Unistar Nuclear, a collaboration between Constellation Energy and French company Areva hope to build a new plant at the Calvert Cliffs plant in Lusby.
Naturally there are many groups dead against the building of any new nuclear plants, which is only reasonable as there is a fear of an accident like the ones at Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. Yet since those events safety has been the utmost priority in this industry and there have been no similar accidents.
One thing in favor of nuclear power is that the technology has advanced a long way, making an accident less likely, however there is the treat from terrorism these days, which is totally out of the hands of technology and any safety measures that are in place.
This is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly.

This makes very good business sense, both for the consumer who is looking for eco friendly products and the company itself, Verdant can capitalize on this market and make a great name for their business, while other similar businesses just talk about it.

Last month i profiled an eco-friendly pizzeria which had delivery drivers in electric bikes called Galactic Pizza. Today i want to tell you about Pizza Fusion.
Pizza Fusion, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida has been in operation since 2006. This organic pizza franchise is a model of eco-friendliness in both their food products and their business activities. Started up by two college buds, their aim is create a business that is both profitable and socially responsible. This goal has led them to the Pizza Fusion concept, an eatery where the following initiatives take place:
Delivering their food in company owned hybrid vehicles
Powering their stores, corporate office and website 100% with renewable wind energy
Recycling and giving customers discounts for bringing back their pizza boxes to recycle them
Using only eco-friendly cleaners to sanitize all their stores

Reader tip (thanxs, ken) introduces us to Eco-Nique, an online retailer that sells climate neutral ipod cases. In case you’re wondering what are climate neutral ipod cases, essentially they are regular iPod cases but what makes them green is the eco friendly operations of the retailer.
Eco-nique has partnered up with Climate Care to off-set its carbon emissions from all its business operations. It has agreed to off-set the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the manufacturing, freight, transportation, administration, and the production of its iPod cases. In their own words, “offsetting quite simply means paying someone to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere to net off the CO2 generated from our activities”.
They are also is involved in various eco projects around the world. Visit here for more details on what they are involved with. The cases themselves are good looking, made with (not so eco-friendly ) leather, and come in various designs, styles, and price points.

It seems to be a strange contradiction, that bubble warp can actually be eco friendly. Yet a company in the UK has come up with an eco friendly version of this popular packing material.
The reason why this is green, is because they use a compstable film which meets the European standards for this type of compostable and also biodegradable plastics. It will in fact 90% decompose within 90 days.
This is a great achivement, because the product itself is used in many storage solutions and would literally be a waste if it could not be recycled in some manner.

Howard Lyman is known for several things, one is his Mad Cowboy book in which he speaks of his days as a cattle rancher who had his own feedlot and factory farm and his personal account of feeding chemicals, pesticides, and even feeding other chemically-laced cows to cows.
Howard is also known for his highly publicized trial that included Oprah Winfrey against Texas cattle farmers. He is perhaps best known as the “the cowboy that won’t eat meat”, he went vegetarian (then vegan) many moons ago.
His latest publishing offer is a book called, “No More Bull! The Mad Cowboy Targets America’s Worst Enemy: Our Diet”. In the book he talks about what is keeping the meat industry afloat, an update on Mad Cow disease, and he discusses the plant-based diet known as vegetarianism.
Howard Lyman’s story is a compelling one and a must read for anyone interested in living a more meat-free life.
Fellow blogger here at Keetsa, David, wrote a piece a few days ago on The Dirty Dozen, in which he tells us about some commonly used products we all use that are not so eco friendy.
One item on the list got me thinking about eco-friendly guilty pleasures, as in which items are you having difficulty giving up to live a more green life. For me it is paper napkins. I admit i use them way more than i should, and i need to look into reducing my personal footprint with this household item, by using less and buying less of it.
Which dirty dozen item are you having trouble giving up or need more information on how to replace? (place a comment below)

This is a really great idea, belts and buckles that are made in California. The rubber that is used comes from recycled tires, as we know tires are great for recycling and bad for land fill sites, so the eco friendly aspect is clear to see.
The recycled rubber belts actually do have to look and feel of leather, yet they can be worn without any of the worries that leather can have on some peoples minds. While the real leather belts are soft and subtle with that feel of luxury. The belts come in three different colors, black leather, brown leather and black recycled rubber.
The buckles can be interchanged so that the nice fitting belt can remain the one that you wear, but the buckle makes the whole thing look like another belt, making it the best of both worlds.
For men and women:
Small: Fitting hips to 28″-32″
Medium: Fitting hips to 32″-36″
Large: Fitting hips to 36″-40″
Custom sizes can be ordered for $25 extra, please email with inquires.

Generally non-stick is not very eco friendly, but Green Pan obviously is, other wise why call it that in the first place? Anyway joking aside the non-stick part of the pans would normally be coming from Polytetrafluoroethylene (PFTE), which with a name like that just cannot be good for the environment.
The Green Pan non-stick system comes from a ceramic based nano coating, which can withstand up to 850 degrees, whereas normal non-stick can only reach 500 degrees, so you burn more food but be green at the same time!
The six piece set will cost $89.90.

I am a big fan of the eco-friendly line of shoes from the Simple brand, almost all of their shoe styles are truly unique, fresh, and hip. They also make their shoes with a combination of recycled and or sustainable materials.
The lovely sandal shoe pictured above is made from jute, cotton canvas, car tire outsole, and a bamboo lining. I like the green and yellow flowery design print and the fact that it is lace-free, i hate laces.
This one i found at PiperLime, a new shoe division from the Gap, fashion group company.

Who doesn’t need another fashion accessory for their wicked iPod? It is amazing how many items one can either add to the music marvel known as the iPod or accessorize with their iPod.
Well here is one for the ladies, a tote bag that comes with built-in speakers and a neat holder for the iPod right on the outside of the bag for easy viewing (just don’t leave it out in plain view, or it will be snatched faster than you can say, “has anyone seen my cute new bag”).
The music lovers bag is made from faux leather, and comes in the signature Steve Jobs color of white. Priced at around $99 at most online retailers.

They have really groovy eco friendly items on display from a variety of retailers such as Urban Outfitters, Root of The Earth, Burt’s Bees, and more. The gift items range from hemp bags to jewelry, from plates with a purpose to vegan desserts.
One of the cool things about the Gifts.com website is the numerous ways to search for items. One can search by recipient, personality, occasion, category, price, or keyword.
