I had the chance to visit a breathtaking beach on the eastern coast of Guam called Taga’chang Beach. The beach is located in a small cove surrounded by cliffs on all sides and only accessible from a small winding road paved along the cliff line. When I arrived at Taga’chang Beach it [...]

And my little Connecticut Real Estate BlogAssociate Editor Luke Mullins writes a real estate blog over at US News and World Reports. I really like Luke's blog because he keeps it interesting and makes me laugh. Woven between the housing start posts and the market updates is some fun stuff like Friday's Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russells Pad for Rent. ( I wish I had a meditation room.) I found Luke's Win a Date with Alan Greenspan post to be pretty funny. Since Mr. Greenspan is dating for charity and bringing his wife along, I don't think it is supposed to be funny, but the idea of a date with Alan Greenspan doesn't exactly measure up to one with George Clooney. So I laughed. On Wednesday of this week, Luke was

When I received an email from Nick of LOMBOK about their spring-summer collection inspired by the East, I visualized a collection full of bright colors and some what expected Eastern kitsch. But I was very pleasantly surprised to see a collection so classy, subtle and contemporary! LOMBOK has very effectively picked up nuances of Eastern design, local craft and textures, and designed it's products keeping a global home maker as the focus customer. LOMBOK's collection is primarily from Indonesia and Vietnam. In their own words:Our passion is to use recycled and natural materials wherever possible, for pieces that are naturally stylish and comfortable with that reassuring lived-in feel. We do everything we can to be an ethical producer. The key principles in the sourcing of materials for LO
You CAN go home again and take lots of photos too!I was in Pittsburgh for a few days with my Cyberprofessional Networking Group. My old hometown gave the group plenty of photo opportunities. Friday's photo is one of 452 photos (not a typo) taken by member Les Sulgrove of Des Moines. The location on Mount Washington is a popular vantage for photographers and captures the Duquesne Incline as well as Point State Park where the 3 rivers meet. (All together now - the Monongehela, the Allegheny and the Ohio.) It's my favorite of his many photographs because it reminds me of a postcard. It is also a location that brings back memories of growing up in Pittsburgh. See AlsoLast Week: Eastern Connecticut Photo Fr
In September 2007, CAF (the Confederation of African Football) announced the creation of a new tournament - the African Championship of Nations - a competition for the B-teams (only players who are active in their domestic league are eligible). This tournament is meant to strengthen the national leagues all over Africa and to enlarge the player pool for the national sides.Prince Dornu-Leiku wrote an interesting article regarding this competition on PlanetWorldCup.com.How about a similar competition for countries from Central and Eastern Europe (also known as The wild, wild east on Xtratime :) ), involving teams from the former Eastern Bloc (including Albania and the ex-Yugoslavian countries for good measure)?Split the 24 countries in 6 groups of 4 teams with the winners and the best two run
April 28, NY TimesBEIJING — A predawn collision between two passenger trains in Eastern China on Monday has killed at least 66 people and injured 247, according to Xinhua, the state news agency, making it one of the deadliest rail accidents in recent years. The two trains, one heading from Beijing to Qingdao and the other traveling between Yantai and Xuzhou, collided at 4:40 a.m. in the town of Zibo, Shandong Province.Witnesses said one train derailed at a bend and then struck the other, throwing at least ten cars into a ditch. Wire reports quoted a rail official saying that a new timetable introduced on Monday might have contributed to the crash.Last September, a collision involving two trains took place on the same line, although there were no deaths. In January, 18 track workers were k

It is known that Christian Easter Celebration Date became different between Eastern and Western Sides of the world, this difference took place in 1582, as a result of the decision made by the Western Church to start using the Gregorian Calendar -the standard calendar for much of the world- while the Eastern Church continued using the older Julian Calendar. How Easter Date is determined and the formula for Easter is the same for all sides: "The first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox" . and it is identical for both Western and Eastern sides, but the issue of applying it on different Calendars is resulting in different dates. This simple issue of using different calenders that is making some type of inconsistency of Easter Celebration Date, is making everyone wo

The Mailbox SeriesMy friend Chris Griffith has started a mailbox series at her blog, Life In Bonita Springs. Personally I wish I had thought of the idea first. But the blogophere is full of nice people and Chris is one of the nicest so she suggested I run with the idea. I found this creative mailbox on Meadow Drive in Gales Ferry. I'm hoping it will be a blooming mailbox this summer. I actually used a photo of a mailbox for Photo Friday in the past so I guess that one would be the first in the series; I just didn't know it was a series at the time. If you know where I can find any clever, creative or even bizarre mailboxes, let me know. I'll go take a photo and they may show up here on Photo Friday!See AlsoLast Week
Watch free online full movieEastern Promises 2007Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts, Vincent CasselDirector: David CronenbergThe mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen) is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon (Academy Award nominee Armin Mueller-Stahl), whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold and brutal core, the family's fortunes are tested by Semyon's volatile son and enforcer, Kirill (Vincent Cassel), who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father. But Nikolai's carefully maintained existence is jarred once he crosses paths at C

Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce are just too powerful a combination for any team in the East to handle. It not just that these three can score at will, but there defense is the best in the NBA and they can stop anyone.

Captain Scott's Lobster DockThose that follow this blog know that my favorite place to buy lobster rolls is Captain Scott's Lobster Dock in New London. The good news is Captain Scott's is open for the season! The bad news is lobster prices are way up in the area. Jijiga, Eastern Ethiopia - The road from Harar runs for more than 600 miles east towards the border with Somalia, penetrating deep into the desiccated badlands of the Ogaden desert, the dusty heart of Ethiopia's war-torn Somali regional state.Sparse scrub and thorn bush, brown termite mounds, and flocks of bony sheep edge up against the burning asphalt strip. Wandering camels are a hazard to traffic; but vehicles are few. Like the occasional herdsman, standing outside transportable mudul huts, they stare in mild surprise as white UN Land Cruisers race by.The road's destination is Gode, via the regional capital of Jijiga, and the towns of Kebri Beyah, Degehabur and Kebri Dehar. But the part-finished two-lane road also blazes a figurative path, unwelcome to some, into the isolated and disput

Easter in Eastern EuropeEaster's the most important festival throughout Eastern Europe, and food preparations begin in earnest during the week running up to Easter, known as Passion Week. An enormous range of pastries, cakes and biscuits are enjoyed during the Easter celebrations. Easter Saturday - a basket of food, known as the blessing basket, may be taken to the priest to be blessed. Only at that stage will people believe that Lent truly is over. This beautifully decorated basket is crammed full with symbolic foods such as a figurine of a lamb made from sugar (as a symbol of Christ, the Lamb of God), decorated coloured eggs (to represent resurrection), bread and salt (for prosperity and health - the bread represents hard work, the salt protects from rotting), meats and sausages (fo

For a long time the management of EPAM Systems, Eastern Europe’s largest software development company, was looking to enter the Russian outsourcing market. At the same time the labor market in Belarus, with a population of nearly 10 million and EPAM’s first offshore location, began heating up. So the need for new resources became more urgent.EPAM management selected Vested Development (VDI), a Russian software development company headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts. “We looked at a number of companies, but with VDI we knew each other for many years and there was a strong level of comfort,” says Arkady Dobkin, CEO of EPAM. VDI, founded in 1993, began life as an offshore software development company. However, since the beginning of 2000, the company has placed a strong focus o
Eastern Promises, David Cronenberg's latest, tells the story of a nurse who gets herself into trouble by being determined to help find the family of a baby which is left in her hands. Traces lead her to the Russian maffia and soon she finds herself in the middle of a dangerous world of betrayal and murder. Overall Eastern Promises kind of feels a bit old fashioned and it's definitely one of those films you either love or hate. The film's setting and style very much remind of the past. Bad guys' throats are cut with fake blood sipping out and running down their necks. A sequence in a sauna ends in a small massacre after providing you with some nice thrills. Cronenberg has made a nice and solid crime drama set in London. Viggo Mortensen is ruthless as the Russian Nikolai, portraying a man yo
I honestly have to say that when an opportunity presented itself for me to watch 'Eastern Promises', I had a sense of dread creeping through my mind. It is not because I dislike drama films, heck no, far from it. The problem was that this film is a David Cronenberg film. Yes, David at one point was a master that brought us movies that was fresh, thought-provoking and saw things from a different perspective. Movies like ‘A History of Violence’, ‘Spider’ and the excellent ‘eXistenZ’ was the brilliant streak Cronenberg created that mesmerized the film world with its brain teasing plots, odd storylines and richness in meaning underneath the stories that his movies provided. But considering what David had to play with in ‘Eastern Promises’, I feared for the worst. And sad to say
In 2006 we ramped up on international webmaster issues and particularly tried to support Eastern Europe. We opened several offices in the region, improved our algorithms with respect to these languages, and localized many of our products. Should I find only one word to describe these markets, I would say they are diverse. Still, they [...]
Ten days ago, I wrote about how the Singapore and Abu Dhabi governments are buying up Western banks.
This week has seen the Chinese Government buy almost 10% of Morgan Stanley, the US mega-bank, as reported in the International Herald Tribune.
To give you an idea of how big Morgan Stanley is, it’s just written down the value of its SubPrime holdings by $9.4 billion. This is about 50 times the loss as Bradford and Bingley made in their write-down.
$9.4 billion is, to put it mildly, an awful lot of money to have admitted you loaned to people who couldn’t really afford to pay it back. In these circumstances, is it surprising that it’s getting tougher to borrow?
Oh, and has the head of Morgan Stanley resigned over this? No, but he has said that he won’t accept a bonus this year.

The Background: Matt and John are leaving me...flying back to the U.S. next week. So I decided to take them out to lunch and invited Jon along for the trip.
I don't know why I haven't written about Shish before. God knows I've been there enough times. I like Shish because I am cheap. A big group can eat there for £10 a head. I also like Shish because I like hummous and pita.
The Food: Above, I wrote that A. I like Shish and B. I like hummous and pita. You would think that would mean that I would enjoy the intersection of the two (or three, as the case may be)...the ven diagram, I suppose. But you know...I'm not sure. I am not a huge fan of the hummous at Shish. I like the pita, but I bet it comes from a plastic bag. The hummous needs salt. (But remember my nationality as you read that.)
But I do like the meal deal at Shish. That's why
When do Indian outsourcing services providers fail to fit the mould? This is the question Stephanie Moore, VP at Forrester, raised at their annual Services and Sourcing Forum. In terms of outsourcing, India may not always be the best decision for a business, explained Forrester.…India does have its drawbacks as an area, said Moore in her keynote. India is more expensive than many locations, travel can be difficult and the India’s infrastructure has difficulty supporting its growth, Moore added.“One of the most important issues companies struggle with is time zones,” Moore said, adding “you don’t want critical systems supported by someone on the night shift, who probably isn’t the brightest in the company.”Also businesses need companies with similar language and cultural effi
The BBC’s Bob Preston has made some comments that have worried me more than a little.
Firstly, he noted that Swiss giant UBS has just announced FURTHER losses of £4.9 billion due to the subPrime crisis - these are on top of the £1.8 billion it announced in October.
UBS is still standing up OK though, although these losses mean that it will make an overall loss this year, it’s just managed to raise £4.8 billion - not from its own Government (Mr. Darling, take note), but from the Government of Singapore’s Investment Corporation.
To put things in perspective, that’s about 3 times as much money as it looks like Northern Rock is going to end up needing to patch its problems.
UBS’s borrowing is in the form of “convertible shares” - firstly the Singapore Government lends UBS the money - at 9% interest - for two years. Then, at the end of that, it can convert that loan into shares if it wants to. A nice little earner for a government sitting on a lo

The empire of Kertanegara. Long before the 12th century, Chinese shipping had become capable of distant voyages, and Chinese merchants sailed directly to the numerous producing centres in the archipelago. The eastern Javanese ports became more prosperous than ever before. A smaller entrepôt trade also developed on the coasts of Sumatra and Borneo and in the offshore islands at the southern entrance to the Strait of Malacca. Heaps of Chinese ceramics of the 12th to 14th century provide remarkable testimony to an important trading centre at Kota Cina near modern Medan on the northeast coast of Sumatra. In consequence, the Minangkabau princes in the hinterland of central Sumatra, heirs to the pretensions of the great overl
After the beginning of the 10th century, inscriptions and monuments in central Java cease. For more than 500 years little is known of developments in central Java, and nothing of what happened in western Java or in the eastern hook of the island. The evidence for these years comes almost exclusively from the Brantas River valley and the adjacent valleys of eastern Java. This abrupt shift in the historian's focus of attention has never been satisfactorily explained. Government and politics. Eastern Java did not form a natural political unit. No single town emerged that was so exceptionally endowed in local resources as to become a permanent capital; instead, the residencies of defeated kings were abandoned, and the site
