It's Easter Sunday afternoon and I'm braving the crowds at Albertson's grocery store because I forgot to get my parents a card. I'm old school; I still like real cards instead of e-stuff on special occasions. So, on my way to Easter dinner I stand before the picked over card section of strays with mismatched envelops, folded corners or too much glitter. I'm a bad daughter.I finally find a nice card tucked behind a ghastly one and walk towards check-out. I'm walking upstream. Everyone comes at me with carts full of ham, wine, produce and other feast fixings. I swerve left and right, dodging wild-eyed shoppers rushing to complete their lists.I try to pick the fast lane. When I was a kid, the Easter Bunny made it all worthwhile. The giant stuffed rabbit hopping around the world, delivering Cadbury eggs, jelly beans and all the rest, more than made up for Holy Week.And it was a tough week. For the true meaning of Holy Week is to suffer through endless hours of church. On Palm Sunday leaves would be passed out. These were useful for weaving into braids, as the Priest read the Passion in its entirety, which usually took about five hours.But then Holy Thursday rolled around. #679: HELL, REDEMPTION, AND THE EASTER BUNNYI went to Shoppers Drug Mart after work to pick up my brain meds and cat food and whatnot. It was a difficult trip for me, because PMS, spring allergies, and an otherwise emotionally trying afternoon had left me a little twitchy. For example, my opening conversation with the pharmacist went a little like this:Schmutzie: I'm here to pick up my prescription.Pharmacist: [looks at me blankly]Schmutzie: Well, I'm not, obviously, because this is the counter where you drop off prescriptions. The pick-up counter is over there. [I indicate the pick-up counter with a limp hand] I mean, you've got mine in your computer, obviously, since I haven't handed you a paper prescription. Looks like we had fun, huh? Not really. I thought we'd have trouble with one or two of the triplets, but not all three. This was the best photo of the bunch. Lauren almost fell off of the bench a couple of times. I kind of felt sorry for the Easter Bunny. I'm depositing some money into the therapy fund right after this post :-)
As I said in my previous post about Lent, when I was growing up, Easter is celebrated in a more solemn way in our family. We didn't have Easter eggs, Easter Bunnies and Easter Baskets. It was all about Jesus.When my kids were little, I struggled about the story of Easter Bunnies. I honestly didn't want them to think it's true. Nevertheless, I also didn't want to deprive them of the fun other kids have in egg hunt, and finding and opening Easter baskets in the morning. Thankfully, I found a nice little book that explain to kids that Easter Bunnies are not real.... but it was done well. That book is called "Easter Bunny Are You For Real?" by Harold Myra. It's available are Amazon.com (that's where I got the photo here). Check out the feedback of buyers of Amazon for more thoughts about this book. I think it's pretty good and I highly recommend this.
