Earthquake in Illinois? New Madrid Fault rears its ugly head in St. Louis, Chicago, Indiana, Kentucky
Midwesterners received the shock of their lives this morning- an earthquake, measuring 5.4 on the richter scale, rattled the Midwest from St. Louis to Indianapolis early this morning. The earthquake center was about 6 miles from West Salem, Illinois, but the seismic activity was felt up to 350 miles away. Earthquake activity, while extremely rare, does occur occasionally in the region due to the New Madrid fault line, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (earthquake.usgs.gov). A lesser known northern extension of the New Madrid fault line, the Wabash fault (or Wabash Valley fault), is also believed to have been involved in today's earthquake.Watch this sleepy resident describe his experience:Nonetheless, it was a very surprising wake-up call this Friday morning.View the AP news source

      Earthquake!
This was the week of the earthquake, and little else has been talked about. It was quite a strange experience, being woken by the bed being shaken. We went through the same thought-processes as everyone else we've talked to: one of us was having a seizure, no; then someone has kicked the front door in - no, as the cat was sat quietly at the bottom of the stairs looking up and wondering what on earth we had done to make the house shake. I think I eventually decided it must have been a big lorry going by, and went back to sleep; the thought that it was an earthquake never crossed my mind. It's another sign of how lucky we are in this country; we really don't get extremes of anything. That was the biggest earthquake I've ever experienced simply because I was aware it was happening. In Rotherha

      Earthquake Hits UK
Large parts of England and Wales have been hit by an earthquake last week measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale. That was thought to be the UK's largest earthquake for 10 years. According to studies, an earthquake of magnitude four is equivalent to the power of a small nuclear weapon.Buildings shook for up to 30 seconds and there was structural damage as homes were shaken. It's really quite frightening.I remember the July 16, 199o earthquake that hit the Philippines. It's probably one of the worst earthquakes that ever happened. Several private and public buildings were severely damaged and destroyed, many of which were hotels. One of the buildings destroyed was a five-star hotel which collapsed over the lobby area killing about 50 people. This was reason enough for one company to highligh

We had an earthquake last night. It lasted around 10 to 15 seconds. I must admit I was still asleep half way through it and thought that I was having a weird rocking dream. Anyway, once I woke up a bit and sussed out that it was in fact an earthquake and not our boiler exploding, we waited for the cries from the baby monitor. Not a peep. Emma went into their room and they were fast asleep in their cots. This leaves me with one annoying question. Why can my girls sleep through a 5.0 earthquake but if I make a loud creak as I come up the stairs, they scream the house down as if it the end of the world?

At first, with my quaint little history of petit mal and red wine, I thought it was just me, but a few other people say they felt something too. Was that an Earthquake in England just now?   1.23am The BBC is now reporting this

What to do in case of an earthquake
Well not a literal one, but the one that has been shaking SL lately involving the copyright infringement. Absolutely everyone is panicking and feeling kinda edgy. Designers are feeling underappreciated and try to do everything that is in their power to protect their creations. Some feel they are the next ones on the thieves' list, whilst others are even scared that they are going to be falsely accused for copying at one point or another. One person (not a designer) even accused me of harassment. And I have never even uttered a single word to her, nor remember seeing her. Talking bout brain damage. That's how far this has gone. The protests haven't helped much. All the stolen items are up in the thieves' stores again, just like nothing has happened. Still he is in denial and thinks that he i

Martinique Earthquake Felt Here in Puerto Rico
Yesterday around 3pm there was a 7.4 magnitude earthquake about 90miles off the north west coast of Martinique in the Caribbean. Fortunately, it appears that was little or no damage and no major injuries. The BBC website is reporting that 2 people in Martinique were injured (no details available). The quake was so large that it was felt here in Puerto Rico as a 6.2 magnitude quake. I was in my office in Rio Piedras and the building began to shake slightly just after 3pm. It was nothing major, but it certainly felt strange. From all accounts here in Puerto Rico the quake was felt throughout the island from San Juan to Cabo Roja. It was the biggest earthquake to hit this part of the Caribbean since the 1940’s. There have been no reports of damage or injuries here in Puerto Rico. The worst quake to hit Puerto Rico was back in 1918 when a 7.3 quake hit just off the coast of Aguadilla. Image Source: elnuevodia.com

      Earthquake in Delhi
Did anyone notice that we had an earthquake last night? It measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and occurred some 20 kilometres underground on the Delhi-Haryana border. Evidently, the epicentre was at Bahadurgarh. I hope no one was injured or killed and no homes were damaged. What does worry me is the fact that no one knows if the Delhi government is prepared to face an earthquake in the city. So I’ve been checking up on some foreign earthquake survival sites. Here’s some information that I got from the FEMA site. They’ve provided the following earthquake survival tips:Create and practice a family/personal earthquake plan.Bolt tall furniture to wall studs.Tie down items, such as computers, televisions and bookcases, which might fall during an earthquake.Install and use bolts and latches

Strong earthquake injures 17 in Indonesia
A strong earthquake of 6.7-magnitude struck off Sumbawa island in southeastern yesterday, injuring at least 17 people and prompting a tsunami warning that was later lifted, officials said. The earthquake, which hit at 12:02am, occurred 44 km west of Raba and 349km east of Denpasar, Bali, at a depth of 30km, the US Geological Survey said. The Indonesian meteorological agency also put the quake at 6.7-magnitude and said a tsunami warning was issued, though for technical reasons it was not sent as usual by text message to media."There were some problems with the technical equipment and the quake was read as being on land, when actually it was undersea. The threat has already been lifted," agency official Ali Imron said.Earlier another official had said no warning was issued. There were no reports of damage but the agency head Suharjono told ElShinta radio that the area that would have been affected could not be immediately reached. The quake was felt on the nearby islands of Lombok and Bali

      Earthquake: Tonga
I awoke to a terrible shaking sensation at around four in the morning. At first I thought the large Tongan woman sleeping beside me had put another quarter in the vibrating bed machine- kidding. Books were falling off the shelves, pigs and dogs outside were barking, howling and squealing at the tops of their little lungs. It took a minute, but I realized I was experiencing an earthquake. Now, some people might freak out and run into the ocean or wrap a shotgun around their lips. But as the Navy Seals fall back on their training when confronted by life threatening situations, I did not panic, but simply fell back on my training. Pointedly, my second grade earthquake awareness safety video training. Why we watched those in Nebraska, I have no idea. Maybe they knew dilatants like me would wind up in earthquake hotbeds on the other side of the world someday. (more…) Share This Article

I was (where else?) downstairs sitting at the computer. I heard the large sliding glass door windows rattling loudly and jumped up. I thought it was Chloe, the guard dog, banging against them which she sometimes does. At the same moment that I stepped into the hall, El Jefe ran out of the upstairs room, saying, "Did you feel that! I was about to jump off the terraza!" I think that he may have been exaggerating a little!I didn't feel anything, but there was no wind and no dogs near those doors so we were both convinced that there had been an earthquake. I started checking the U.S. Geological Service earthquake information. We turned on the television and bef

Prayers for Peru earthquake and Utah Mining disasters.
If we became sad at every disaster in the world, we'd never leave a state of despondency. If we never cared about others' suffering, however, we'd be something less than people. This isn't just a cliche' either. Animals take care of their young, but do they grieve for those lost to them? For those animals they never met? Anyways, I felt for the miners, but the accident really touched me when the rescue workers died trying to save them. Although their gambit failed, it was a noble act in every sense of the word and represents the best aspect of our humanity. The Peru one is pure emotion, I admit. I just think a lot of good people died. Tragedy is when we rise to our God-given potential and He desires nothing more than for us to do well. How do I know? He tells us several times in the Bible. We can't all don mining gear and attempt a rescue (but some will-God bless them), but I'm sure we can do something. At least the religious should offer a prayer. Here's a prayer from

Help for Peru earthquake victims- We can literally save lives
Things to consider: 1. If you're religious, some charity for the truly needy is required of you. 2. If you're not religious, you can still share the charity ideal, but for non-theistic reasons. 3. Peruvians don't have FEMA. They need help from their American brothers and sisters. They are the truly needy at this time. 4. If charity is difficult for you (like it is for me at times), this helps: I will help Peruvians eat by ordering regular coffee instead of the latte at Starbucks for one week. You can give at church this weekend I'm sure. You can also visit these sites and contribute there: Charity Navigator Catholic Relief More Catholic relief Direct relief international for Peru. P.S.
