Former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock will join Durham for the duration of this summer's Twenty20 Cup. Pollock is currently playing for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and will be available for the Riverside county from June 11. Albie Morkel takes over from batsman Neil McKenzie as the nominated overseas player later this season, but Pollock is eligible to play as a Kolpak signing because he has retired from first-class cricket in South Africa. Pollock, a veteran of more than 100 Test matches and 300 one-day internationals for the Proteas, said: "When I got the offer from Durham I really jumped at the chance to get on board, they are determined to do well in the Twenty20 Cup and I want to contribute to that success. "They proved themselves to be a force in the four-day

Even if you were unable to get to Munich for the 174th Oktoberfest that wrapped up on Sunday or cannot break away to get to Denver for the 26th annual Great American Beer Festival that kicks off on Thursday, you don't have to feel left out of the beer festival scene.Germany's Oktoberfest was attended by 6.2 million visitors this year, down by about 300,000 from the record set in 2006. Those who did show up were thirsty, consuming 6.7 million liters of beer, up 10 percent. In Denver, they are getting ready for the GABF, which runs from Oct. 11-13. The GABF will pour more than 1,800 beers from 474 American breweries to more than 40,000 beer fans. While I am not earning any frequent flyer miles going to Germany or Colorado this year, my beer festival card has been filled the last two weekends. On Sept. 29th it was the ninth annual Charlotte Oktoberfest at the Metrolina Expo Center just north of Charlotte, N.C. The festival was presented by The Carolina BrewMasters and Creative Loafing, a

Shivnarine Chanderpaul anchored his side to a huge total
Durham will look to clinch their first domestic trophy tomorrow as rain put an end to their victory march in the Friends Provident trophy final against Hampshire at Lord's today.Chasing a mammoth 313 for victory, Hampshire were struggling on 158-5 when the heavens opened and put an end to the day's play. The teams will now have to come back tomorrow to finish off the game.Hampshire skipper Shane Warne, who decided to leave out fellow spinner Shaun Udal, won the toss and under cloudy skies decided to bowl first. But although his team claimed the early wicket of Michael Di Venuto for 12, they were taken to the cleaners in the first 15 overs by young wicketkeeper-batsman Phil Mustard, who smashed 49 from 38 balls to give his side a good platform.Warne's men had a slight opening when Mustard was out lbw to James Bruce to leave Durham on 69-2, but then Kyle Coetzer and the experienced Shivnarine Chanderpaul put on a century part
A few days with changeable weather in the beautiful area where the borders of County Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria almost meet. Exploring, not for the first time, or the last, Teesdale, Weardale and the routes between the two dales before moving further north to follow the River Tyne and Hadrian's Wall between Corbridge and Brampton plus visiting sections of Northumberland National Park and Kielder Forest. The two pictures above give a 'flavour' of the landscape, rolling hills, winding narrow roads, some stunning farms but 90% of the time the light and/or rain resulted in marking the locations for another trip and better light. I usually record all potential subjects with the following details: time of year to return (early spring, late winter etc), time of day (morning, evening etc), sun position in relation to subject (for light direction). Like all things, nothing stays the same, I have returned to some locations to find new farm barns blocking the view, 7 very large trees c
Warne produced a vital half-century
Hampshire number 11 batsman David Griffths scraped through the last five overs of his side's second innings against Durham to help then to a battling draw. With a target of 358 to win, Hampshire's reply was always destined to be a rearguard action aimed at securing a draw rather than a whole-hearted run chase and they duly finished the match on 262-9.Michael Brown's magnificent 126 not out formed the main part of that resistance as much of the top order crumbled around him.Michael Carberry returned to the pavilion having lent just four runs to the effort before John Crawley came unstuck on twelve.Shane Warne's busy 50, in addition to a useful 26 from Michael Lumb, was the only substantial support for Brown as he struggled to save his side in the face of some tricky bowling from New Zealander Paul Wiseman. The spinner finished with figures of 5-65 but could not add the crucial last scalp as Griffiths dogged defended his stumps through the closing
Please don't judge me for listening, I only do it cos Wrighty is now a co-presenter (I think he's on holiday at the moment though). I think they may well have got Wrighty on the station just to try and convince us that they are not Anti-Arsenal.
Anyway I was listening on my drive home yesterday and Durham (a spurs fan posing as a posh fan) reckons that Spurs will better us next season. Not only that but he went on to say that he'd rather have Darren Bent than Van Persie. When a caller tried to argue the point he replied saying that Van Persie is nothing (without Henry).
Now anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm not feeling particularly optimistic about Arsenal at the moment. At the same time though, it is worth noting that we are somewhat an unknown quantity at the moment. Most of the squad are young kids with some experience behind them and hopefully raring to go, still hurting from the pain of last season.
I wouldnt be too quick to discount
A month ago I was planning to go to Paris for the the month of July. I say planning instead of going because there were several things that needed to transpire before that could actually happen. I needed a new passport. My old passport that I obtained in 1997, which included a picture that made me look like Vanilla Ice if he had taken up an academic career, expired in May. I needed a flat in Paris. I simply didn't have it in me to stay in a dorm or some such accommodation. Last time I did that in Freiburg, Germany, I shared a room with a much younger American who soaked his foot in an upside-down frisbee and would note his daily recovery in his journal. [Oddities aside, he was a good guy.]I also would need a flight to Paris. Normally this would not be a problem, but my gargantuan cell phone bill, which ended up being almost as much as my rent for the month, was making things a bit tight. Now I'm going; all hurdles have been cleared. I bought my plane ticket. The U.S. Embassy
I was extremely excited to get an advanced copy David Anthony Durham's epic fantasy Acacia because Durham is a Black man. Durham disproves the common belief that Black people do not read or write science fiction or fantasy. David Anthony Durham joins the ranks of Octavia Butler, Nalo Hopkinson, and Samuel R. Delaney in proving that Blacks do write science fiction and fantasy. I am very ashamed to admit that I expected to see a book full of Black people using magic against orcs and dragons. I pictured something like a Wesley Snipes inspired Lord of the Rings. Thank goodness I was wrong. There were no black people introduced until about 250 pages into the book, but I was not disappointed. For one thing, Durham's writing is so beautiful he could have been writing chick lit and I would not have minded. However, he did deal with two topics that I feel hits the African American community right at its heart: drug addiction and slavery. Durham mixes these three elements (fantasy, dr
Following is an article from the Durham, North Carolina newspaper, The News and Observer. The article is about proposed legislation that would require a permit to purchase ammunition. I’ve taken the liberty of interjecting my own statements into the article which will show up in blue Comic Sans MS (because that’s my favorite font).
I like to remain positive and forward-looking in this blog. Sometimes that’s difficult.

DURHAM - Gun owners looking to reload would have to show a permit every time they buy ammunition, if a bill backed by Durham officials gains state approval.
The proposal championed by the Rev. Melvin Whitley, a local community activist, will face opposition from gun-rights groups.
(And any other liberty-conscious person.)
Whitley told state lawmakers and Durham City Council members Monday that anyone over 18 can buy ammunition without being subje
