      Duncan's big adventure
I depart today for a 6 day trip to Tokyo-Seattle-Tokyo-Detroit. I have plans with a friend on the layover in Seattle for dinner, drinks and catch up. Should be fun (I hope). A little P.S. to my "Trip from Hell" post, something else happened on that trip that I have never seen nor had the other flight attendants or gate agents. Upon boarding on the first leg the agent brought down 3 unaccompanied m

For Duncan - Les Macarons de Patissier Menard
A macaron is a traditional French pastry from Nancy, a commune of the Meurthe et Moselle département, in northeastern France. Dating back to the 18th century, the macaron is made of egg whites, almond powder, icing sugar and sugar. This sweet pastry came out of the French courts' baker's oven as round meringue-like domes with a flat base. In the early 1930 the tearoom and pastry-shop

Lukas Podolski recently asserted that ‘football is like chess, except without the dice’. The Yogi Berra comparisons inevitably came in hard and fast, but I rather think that Lukas and I are on the same wavelength: the element of chance that is generated artificially by the use of dice in Monopoly or Ludo or Dungeons and Dragons I believe to be dominant in our beloved game, too. And the way he reacted when he slid leads me to believe that that's what he was trying to do. 'Cause if there was malicious intent, I think he would have popped right up. I believe my guy." Girardi said he didn't have a problem with the slide. "Did his spikes go up a little high? Yes they did," he said. "Part of that could have been because he hit the base funny and then he hit him. When you hit the base funny your legs kind of go up and then if you make contact, it's going to go up. It's going to push up. You don't want to try to hurt anyone, but I believe Shelley

      Duncan Hunter a Definite Maybe
Trying to choose a favorite in the Republican race for the presidential nomination brass ring has been an interesting experience. While the Democrat campaign has become so morbidly boring that you actually have to remind yourself to pay attention (or, more likely, force yourself to pay attention), the Party of Reagan has seen some interesting quirks thus far.The problem is that each new twist causes me to rethink who I will be cheering for to win it all. First was Rudy Giuliani. In fact it’s been Giuliani since September 12, 2001. Remember after the Towers came down, how even some lifelong Dems said they’d vote Republican if Rudy ran? Funny how memory fades and times change. At one time it was Rudy, hands-down. Now, I’m not so sure. Then it was the anticipation of having Ronald Reagan II, a.k.a. Sen. Fred Thompson, come out of the closet and finally announce his candidacy. The media-induced snowball effect of that story is now a thing of legend. Day after week after month saw ever

      Duncan Hunter 2016?

I myself don't know all that much about his stances on many issues, but the ones I've heard (for the most part), I like. The remotes currently offered on E-bay are hands down, more powerful and reliable than the units being produced just a few years ago. I own one myself and use it frequently with very few problems. Best 70 bucks I ever spent!A few quick tips:Test the unit in different locations / situations that best reflect the type of photography work that you do on a daily basis. Venom: The Hunted #1-3 by Larry Hama and Duncan Rouleau
I didn't read many comics in the 1990s, at least not during the middle 1990s, when gems like Vemon: The Hunted came out. I missed the symbiote invasion entirely. So what possessed me to read this one? Access, a desire to see Rouleau's artwork and a sleeping girlfriend.Venom goes skateboarding in this comic book. Well, Eddie Brock anyway. I guess there's never any Venom on a skateboard scene. But Venom on a skateboard kind of sums up this series, which--obviously--utterly sucks. It's probably the first Larry Hama comic book I've read in... ten years plus.Hama sucks, but his dialogue's a standard bad, it's utterly unexceptional. Rouleau's art shows promise (occasionally), but The Hunted has me wary of my preordered issue of his upcoming Metal Men.It reminded me a lot of an episode of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," the cartoon, or at least what I think that cartoon was like.FTags: Marvel Comics, Venom, Larry Hama, Duncan Rouleau, Review, Comic Book

Duncan Helps Yankees Clobber Devil Rays 21-4
Don't say I didn't warn you! The New York Yankees who many gave up for dead and buried in June, are partying like it's 1978. The team that was a game below .500 and ten games behind the Boston Red Sox at the All-Star break is now sitting at 51-46 and 7.5 behind Boston and going into Sunday night six games behind Cleveland for the Wild Card slot. Sunday afternoon's hero was the new kid on the block Shelley Duncan who had two home runs as the Yankees simply shellacked the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 21-4. Duncan the son of former MLB catcher and current ST Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan, is a recent call up from the the Yankees Triple A team in Scranton-Wilkes Barre. New York starter Andy Petite got the win evening his season record at 6-6. New York got 25 hits the second game in a row they had at least 20, as they walloped the Devil Rays in the second game of Saturday's twin-bill 17-5. The Yankees took 3-4 from Tampa Bay and have gone 9-3 since coming back from the break.© Co

NBA Finals: Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, & San Antonio Spurs Win Fourth Title, Sweeping LeBron James & Cleveland Cavaliers
What Happened: Close, but not close enough. On Thursday evening, the Cleveland Cavaliers came close, but couldn’t prevent the San Antonio Spurs from winning game four of the NBA Finals and taking their fourth championship in nine seasons. The Spurs, who became just the fourth franchise to win four NBA Titles, are now being called a dynasty.Once again, they were led by The Big Three: Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Tim Duncan.Parker scored 24 points, connecting on 10-of-14 shots from the floor. He was the Spurs’ best player and became the first European to be named MVP of the Finals. When the final buzzer sounded, Parker flashed his famous smile before getting a hug from fiancé Eva Longoria.Ginobili paced the Spurs with 27 points. But numbers don’t tell the real story. He had a spectacular fourth quarter, scoring 13 points-including a pair of tough drives and an impressive three-pointer.At the post-game press conference, Ginobili sat at the podium table with a champagne-stained T-s

Parker, Ginobili and Duncan carries spurs into a game 3 win
Gregg Popovich, the coach of the San Antonio Spurs, expects his team to be perfect. For three quarters of Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, they were. The Spurs led 89-62 heading into the fourth quarter. Then LeBron James huddled with his Cavalier teammates.Something clicked.Cleveland went on a fourth quarter tear, cutting the lead to eight before Manu Ginobili converted a rare four-point play to preserve the win for San Antonio. The Spurs held on for a 103-92 victory over the Cavaliers, taking game two of the NBA Finals on Sunday at the AT&T Center. With the win, San Antonio leads the best of seven series 2-0.Once again, Tony Parker was brilliant. The lightning-quick guard hit several tough lay-ups early on.But he made his biggest shots down the stretch, sinking two tough jumpers in the fourth quarter, which prevented Cleveland from completing an improbable comeback.Parker finished with 30 points. Tim Duncan had a near triple-double, registering 23 points, nine rebounds, a

Duncan Hunter on Boston Talk Radio- Immigration Reform Audio Clip
Today Duncan Hunter appeared on Howie Carr’s radio show. Howie Carr is a Boston conservative radio host. He deals with  issues local to Boston as well as national issues. He has issued invitations to all candidates running for president to appear on the show when they are in New Hampshire. To date most of the Republican candidates have been on several times. All Democrats have declined the invitation so far. Here is a link to the audio of the conversation that they had on May 18th.

Duncan Hunter at the Republican Debate on border security (video)
This is a fantastic video of Duncan Hunter at the recent Republican debate. He put the blame for our wide open southern border squarely where it belongs, on the Bush administration. The video is from YouTube but is also displayed on the front page of Duncan Hunters official campaign website Go Hunter '08. He so has the needed attitude about securing our borders. He just flat says it's ridiculous to try to stop terrorism here at home with our southern border hanging wide open. Imagine Bush and Cheney at the Mexican border both in Wal Mart greeters vests meeting the illegals and giving them maps to the nearest DMV and welfare office. They might as well be. ~RJH

      Shouldn’t Duncan Be Suspended?
Just before the suspensions on Amare Stoudemire, Boris Diaw, and Robert Horry were delivered, I watched Jalen Rose of the Phoenix Suns in ESPN saying the Tim Duncan and Bruce Bowen were guilty of leaving-the-bench offense in Game 4’s first half when San Antonio’s Francisco Elson fell on the Suns’ James Jones after a dunk. Stu Jackson favored the Spurs again saying that there was “no cause for suspension rule” to be applied because the Elson-Jones (more…)

Paul Duncan Gets Me High (Above the Trees)
Paul Duncan's new album Above the Trees was released by Hometapes on May 1 and since that date I have been listening to it again and again and again. Obsessively. Rich with texture and a trailing narrative, it's the kind of music that you won't get sick of, or rather can't get sick of because it laps over you, envelopes you and lets you live inside of it. And the living is good. This is Paul's 3rd release, following 2003's To An Ambient Hollywood and 2005's Be Careful What You Call Home, and his first outside of a homemade studio. Written in a three month period and recorded in just one week with engineer Tim Iseler in Chicago's Soma EMS studio, Above the Trees features a soaring symphony of guitars, violin, cello, drums, clarinet, pedal steel, piano, trumpets and ghostly synthetic noises creating depth and layers throughout each track.Often compared to Smog and Bonnie Prince Billie (Will Oldham), Paul's voice levitates powerfully above each orchestral composition, the

North Dakota’s Duncan surprised by college hockey’s top award (AP)
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — At the school where a nickname controversy has been lingering for years, University of North Dakota sophomore Ryan Duncan watched his nickname change overnight. He went from “Dunc” to “Hobey” after winning college hockey’s version of the Heisman Trophy. The Hobey Baker Award winner wants his old nickname back. “I would rather just be one of the guys,” Duncan said this week while sitting in the stands of the Ralph Engelstad Arena, home to the more…

We knew it was coming, so it came as no surprise that Duncan Fletcher today resigned as England coach. Fletcher, for all his faults in the past 18 months, has been the single most important figure in the [...]

Paul Duncan - Above The Trees
It has been awhile since I’ve written about talented singer songwriter Paul Duncan. The Texas native that is now based in Brooklyn is preparing to release a new album titled “Above The Trees” and it is nothing short of brilliant. This may not come as a shock to many of you who read ENS or who know that I am also a big fan of Will Oldham and his music. Because “Above The Trees” is the album I wish Oldham would make. Ever since the 1999 gem that is “I See A Darkness” I have hoped Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy) would return to that sound. Well, it appears that Duncan has done it for him, and even upped the stakes considerably. This is the third album from Duncan who is still aligned with the good folks at Home-Tapes Records, a personal favorite label of mine. For his first two efforts Paul recorded in a home studio but this one sees him taking his sound to a proper studio in Chicago, Soma EMS. And not only did he enlist the help of a new eng

Duncan Hunter asks for the help of the blogosphere
I've been following Duncan Hunter for a long time. He's a rock solid Congressman right here in California. He is for building a solid tall fence along all 850 miles of our border with Mexico. He is for limiting Mexican truckers access to that horrible NAFTA super highway in Texas and he's pushing hard to get ex Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean the hell out of prison. He's asking for our help and I for one would be glad to do what I can for him. From what I have seen hes a real old time Conservative with a capitol "C" and no "neo" crap in front of it. I have another vid of him and Glenn Beck. Hat tip to Uncle Seth at Political Vindication for linking to the vid. After serving 14 terms in congress, nobody has ever heard of him. Expect him to have an impact of exactly zero on the primary: assuming he doesn't do the smart thing and just pull the plug.

Amato: Don't be too quick to write off Duncan Hunter
If you had heard of Duncan Hunter before his surprise announcement that he was planning to run for President, then you're the kind of political nerd who probably needs a bit more sunlight. Yet, despite the fact that no one knows who he is, and that he is merely a member of the House of Representatives, Rick Amato, writing in the Washington Times, thinks we should be taking a closer look at Hunter. "He is a social conservative in what is expected to shape up as a socially moderate Republican field," says Amato, apparently including in Romney, Gingrich, Huckabee, Frist, and Brownback in that description. Of those others, only Romney is mentioned by Amato - and described as to the left of Hunter. As the co-author of the 700-mile border fence bill (it's the fence that's 700 miles long, not the bill), Hunter also has solid conservative credentials on immigration. Hunter also has national security experience, from being chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and has some det

Duncan Hunter and John Kerry - If they both end up as the nominees, I'll put mustard on my laptop and eat it
You'll note the resumed lull in updates - bit bogged down with various other bits and pieces, including plenty of background research for the Midterm Election coverage I'll be presenting on Tuesday on LBC News 1152 in London. I seem to more or less get away with not really knowing much about anything on this blog, but on the radio people expect higher standards, so I might as well be minimally prepared. Today I discovered that the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Idaho is called Butch Otter, which I guess may not be amusing in Idaho, but here in England it would raise a smile. I am trying still to keep on top of basic housekeeping, such as the Shop (still Obama and then the rest) and the Rankings. There are two significant changes to note in the Rankings this week - one for each party. On the Republican side, we have good news for New York Governor George Pataki. He may not have moved up in my estimation, but the announcement on Monday from California Rep. Duncan Hunter that h

Keating and Gilmore decide to give Duncan Hunter a run for his money
Just when it looked as if we might be starting to whittle down the field of presidential candidates to those who had some vague chance of picking up a handful of votes, some late arrivals pop up to pad out the line-up once again.Shortly before Christmas, former Oklahoma Republican Governor Frank Keating announced that he would decide early in the New Year whether or not he felt the Oval Office calling to him. Keating said "that he's interested in education improvement, national energy independence, immigration reform and border security." He also pointed out that, in a field of candidates all aspiring to be Ronald Reagan, "I'm the only guy that worked for him". I guess if it worked for Jim Webb...Also seeking to defy the conventional wisdom that Americans will elect as their next president someone they have heard of is former Virginia Republican Governor Jim Gilmore. Duncan Hunter remains optimistic
Whatever one may think of California Rep Duncan Hunter's chances of winning the Republican presidential nomination (I believe one of my own comments on the subject included the word 'unicorn'), I hear the Congressman appear on the Sunday talk shows and sound respectable and knowledgeable, and he certainly isn't lacking in the optimism department."There's been a lot of support expressed and things are going really well," insisted Hunter campaign chief Bruce Young. Either an exploratory committee or a full campaign committee would be established "in the next few weeks," Young said at the end of November.Hunter is clearly not without his supporters. Textile magnate Roger Milliken is one of them - he likes Hunter's protectionist stance on trade. Hunter has also been touting his national security credentials as the outgoing chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. He visited Iowa, where he talked about national defence and border security as well as going on a pheasant hunt

Duncan Hunter formally enters the fray
California Republican Rep Duncan Hunter may have about as much chance of becoming the next President as John Kerry, but if he believes it, he's not showing it. Having set up his exploratory committee just a couple of weeks ago, Hunter moved quickly to put his campaign on a more formal footing, with an announcement in South Carolina last week."The decision to make the formal announcement in South Carolina and not in Hunter's hometown area of San Diego is largely centered on his effort to increase his name familiarity and fundraising efforts in an early primary state," Hunter communications director Roy Tyler told San Diego's North County Times. He also claimed that the Hunter campaign is "$999,999 short" of the $100 million considered necessary to run a national campaign, which means that either the Hunter campaign already has $99 million plus change, or someone in San Diego needs to work on their arithmetic. In fact, Hunter did manage to raise some $300,000 shortly before making hi
