Presidential candidate and current Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Duncan Hunter, made the following statement regarding Veterans Day."Veterans Day provides our nation the opportunity to reflect thankfully on the sacrifices of those who have served the cause of freedom."In the last century more than 619,000 Americans in uniform were killed on battlefields around the world protecting our nation and our way of life."We cannot thank them all sufficiently. It is beyond human capability to grasp the enormity of what they gave so the rest of us might enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We can, however, reflect on the unique quality of America 's veterans and their service."From Bunker Hill to New Orleans, Gettysburg to San Juan Hill, Belleau Wood to Normandy, Chosin Reservoir to Khe San, Desert Storm to Kabul, Baghdad to Fallujah, American veterans have represented the finest of human qualities. Trying to choose a favorite in the Republican race for the presidential nomination brass ring has been an interesting experience. While the Democrat campaign has become so morbidly boring that you actually have to remind yourself to pay attention (or, more likely, force yourself to pay attention), the Party of Reagan has seen some interesting quirks thus far.The problem is that each new twist causes me to rethink who I will be cheering for to win it all. First was Rudy Giuliani. In fact it’s been Giuliani since September 12, 2001. Remember after the Towers came down, how even some lifelong Dems said they’d vote Republican if Rudy ran? Funny how memory fades and times change. At one time it was Rudy, hands-down. Now, I’m not so sure. Then it was the anticipation of having Ronald Reagan II, a.k.a. Sen. Fred Thompson, come out of the closet and finally announce his candidacy. The media-induced snowball effect of that story is now a thing of legend. Day after week after month saw ever
Unfortunately, I think it might be too late for Duncan Hunter in 2008. He's just too far behind in terms of fund-raising and public awareness. I myself don't know all that much about his stances on many issues, but the ones I've heard (for the most part), I like. Would he be VP material?Regardless, after a Republican wins in '08 and re-election in '12, I can see him being a more major player to win it in 2016.A few things I like about Hunter:Hunter sponsored a resolution for a School Prayer Amendment:H.J.RES.52 (2001), H.J.RES.66 (1999), S.J.RES. 1, H.J.RES.12, H. J. RES. 108, & H. J. RES. 55: Nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to prohibit individual or group prayer in public schools or other public institutions. No person shall be required by the United States or by any State to participate in prayer . Neither the United States nor any State shall compose the words of any prayer to be said in public schools. On Energy/Environment:"Global warming & the need to
USA Today article link HOUSE STAFFER SPED UP HUMVEE STEEL When steel industry representatives met with federal officials in February 2004 to talk about how to speed the production of armor plate for Humvees, the person representing the government wasn't from the Pentagon. He was a congressional staffer.Robert Simmons was the deputy staff director for the House Armed Services Committee. And his boss, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., was frustrated. He thought the Army was moving too slowly to fill urgent requests for Iraq for almost 7,000 armor kits to protect Humvees against IEDs. At the time, most of the Humvees being used by soldiers and Marines still had canvas doors and unarmored sides."They were saying it would take about a year to get these kits made, and that just wasn't fast enough," Hunter says today. "We started asking why. We were looking for a way to accelerate the process."So Hunter says he called then-Army Secretary Les Brownlee and asked whether Si
Today Duncan Hunter appeared on Howie Carr’s radio show. Howie Carr is a Boston conservative radio host. He deals with issues local to Boston as well as national issues.
He has issued invitations to all candidates running for president to appear on the show when they are in New Hampshire. To date most of the Republican candidates have been on several times. All Democrats have declined the invitation so far.
Here is a link to the audio of the conversation that they had on May 18th.
This is a fantastic video of Duncan Hunter at the recent Republican debate. He put the blame for our wide open southern border squarely where it belongs, on the Bush administration. The video is from YouTube but is also displayed on the front page of Duncan Hunters official campaign website Go Hunter '08. He so has the needed attitude about securing our borders. He just flat says it's ridiculous to try to stop terrorism here at home with our southern border hanging wide open. Imagine Bush and Cheney at the Mexican border both in Wal Mart greeters vests meeting the illegals and giving them maps to the nearest DMV and welfare office. They might as well be. ~RJH
I've been following Duncan Hunter for a long time. He's a rock solid Congressman right here in California. He is for building a solid tall fence along all 850 miles of our border with Mexico. He is for limiting Mexican truckers access to that horrible NAFTA super highway in Texas and he's pushing hard to get ex Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean the hell out of prison. He's asking for our help and I for one would be glad to do what I can for him. From what I have seen hes a real old time Conservative with a capitol "C" and no "neo" crap in front of it. I have another vid of him and Glenn Beck. Hat tip to Uncle Seth at Political Vindication for linking to the vid. Duncan Hunters Congressional site is here and his presidential campaign site is here. ~RJH
Hopefully more and more candidates do this throughout the campaign season. This is a good way to get their message out to more people. The only bad thing is that mostly they will be preaching to the chopir about most...
rep. duncan hunter (R and presidential candidate) tried his best not to sound more bigoted than pace did the other day when he got up and defended pace yesterday:Rep. Duncan Hunter said that homosexual conduct "is not moral conduct" and that the right of Pace to express his views "is what Marines go to war and fight for...to have morals."The presidential aspirant and top House Republican on military matters said that "Marines are allowed to have principals" and that in his view, Pace's views "will receive a resounding 'yes' from Marines defending our rights" to have morals and principles.Hunter referred to the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, passed by Congress after a firestorm of debate in which advocates argued that allowing homosexuals to serve openly would hurt troop morale and recruitment and undermine the cohesion of combat units.FACT: Seventy-three percent of service members in a recent poll said they felt comfortable around gays, lesbians and bisexuals, and 78 percent rep
10.29.06Duncan Hunter announced he was running for president. He was then the House Armed Services Committee Chair. Now he is the Ranking Minority member. It doesn't matter. After serving 14 terms in congress, nobody has ever heard of him. Expect him to have an impact of exactly zero on the primary: assuming he doesn't do the smart thing and just pull the plug.
If you had heard of Duncan Hunter before his surprise announcement that he was planning to run for President, then you're the kind of political nerd who probably needs a bit more sunlight. Yet, despite the fact that no one knows who he is, and that he is merely a member of the House of Representatives, Rick Amato, writing in the Washington Times, thinks we should be taking a closer look at Hunter. "He is a social conservative in what is expected to shape up as a socially moderate Republican field," says Amato, apparently including in Romney, Gingrich, Huckabee, Frist, and Brownback in that description. Of those others, only Romney is mentioned by Amato - and described as to the left of Hunter. As the co-author of the 700-mile border fence bill (it's the fence that's 700 miles long, not the bill), Hunter also has solid conservative credentials on immigration. Hunter also has national security experience, from being chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and has some det
You'll note the resumed lull in updates - bit bogged down with various other bits and pieces, including plenty of background research for the Midterm Election coverage I'll be presenting on Tuesday on LBC News 1152 in London. I seem to more or less get away with not really knowing much about anything on this blog, but on the radio people expect higher standards, so I might as well be minimally prepared. Today I discovered that the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Idaho is called Butch Otter, which I guess may not be amusing in Idaho, but here in England it would raise a smile.
I am trying still to keep on top of basic housekeeping, such as the Shop (still Obama and then the rest) and the Rankings. There are two significant changes to note in the Rankings this week - one for each party.
On the Republican side, we have good news for New York Governor George Pataki. He may not have moved up in my estimation, but the announcement on Monday from California Rep. Duncan Hunter that h
Whatever one may think of California Rep Duncan Hunter's chances of winning the Republican presidential nomination (I believe one of my own comments on the subject included the word 'unicorn'), I hear the Congressman appear on the Sunday talk shows and sound respectable and knowledgeable, and he certainly isn't lacking in the optimism department."There's been a lot of support expressed and things are going really well," insisted Hunter campaign chief Bruce Young. Either an exploratory committee or a full campaign committee would be established "in the next few weeks," Young said at the end of November.Hunter is clearly not without his supporters. Textile magnate Roger Milliken is one of them - he likes Hunter's protectionist stance on trade. Hunter has also been touting his national security credentials as the outgoing chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. He visited Iowa, where he talked about national defence and border security as well as going on a pheasant hunt

California Republican Rep Duncan Hunter may have about as much chance of becoming the next President as John Kerry, but if he believes it, he's not showing it. Having set up his exploratory committee just a couple of weeks ago, Hunter moved quickly to put his campaign on a more formal footing, with an announcement in South Carolina last week."The decision to make the formal announcement in South Carolina and not in Hunter's hometown area of San Diego is largely centered on his effort to increase his name familiarity and fundraising efforts in an early primary state," Hunter communications director Roy Tyler told San Diego's North County Times. He also claimed that the Hunter campaign is "$999,999 short" of the $100 million considered necessary to run a national campaign, which means that either the Hunter campaign already has $99 million plus change, or someone in San Diego needs to work on their arithmetic. In fact, Hunter did manage to raise some $300,000 shortly before making hi
