The only two requirements to be superintendent in Marion County - and 41 other Florida counties including Pasco - are that you be a registered voter who's at least 18 years old. Marion School Board chairman Ron Crawford tells the Ocala Star-Banner that his county has been lucky to have someone in charge who knows what he's doing.
But having a qualified superintendent shouldn't be up to luck, the Marion School Board says. So it is calling for an election to end the elected superintendent's position, favoring instead a chief executive who's chosen by the board, the Star-Banner reports.
The election would occur in November 2008, if the County Commission puts the issue on the ballot. But it would not take effect until 2012. If history is any guide, the issue doesn't have much of a chance: Voters have rejected the concept by wide margins in 1968, 1978 and 1994, according to the Star-Banner.
