By: Eric Starr The snare drum is the central instrument within the drum set. There are essentially two types of snare drums on the market: wooden-shelled drums and chrome-shelled drums. In rare cases, you may come across plastic or composite-shelled drums, too. A common starter snare drum a chrome 5 1/2" x 14" eight-lug drum. The snare drum contains:A shell or circular body. A top "batter" head and a bottom ultra-thin clear head. Chrome hoops (rims) that fasten the heads to the shell. Tension rods that screw into lug casings, these are used to tighten the rim onto the shell. Snare wires. A throw-off apparatus.Whatever drum you buy make certain that the snare (thin metal strings on the bottom of the drum) are intact and that the throw-off lever on the side of the drum works properly. The throw-off is a chrome apparatus found on the side or the shell of the snare drum. It contains a lever that snaps the snare wires up against the bottom drumhead or releases them so that they hang about 1/
By: Eric Starr Sticks are the main implements you will use, and there are many varieties and models available. The companies with the best quality control are clearly Vic Firth and Regal Tip, but Promark, Zildjian, and Vater also make reputable sticks. For beginners, it is important to use a medium-sized stick such as the Vic Firth American Classic or the Regal Tip 5A. Do not use extremely skinny and short sticks, or conversely, very fat, heavy sticks, as they are designed for either very soft or very loud playing. As a beginner, you need a stick that will be versatile. Finally buy only hickory or oak sticks. Stay away from maple sticks, as they are soft and will dent easily. The standard tip or bead on the end of a stick is wooden. However, nylon tips are popular with many of today's drummers. Unfortunately, some rudimental drummers still reject nylon-tipped sticks, but, thankfully, this obstinate notion is dying away. The only real difference between wooden and nylon tips is that th
By: Eric Starr Many of the great teachers will tell you that the snare drum or pad should be positioned at your navel or belly button. For smaller children, since their bodies are not yet evenly proportioned, some adjustments may need to be made. Your arms should be in an L-shape formation at 90 degrees and the sticks should lay comfortably on top of the drum or pad in an upside down V shape. If your sticks rest on the rim, the drum or pad needs to be lowered. Oppositely if you find that you are leaning into the drum too much, the drum should be raised. The sound you make is only the end result of your stroke, so in order to ensure efficiency of movement, you must make sure that the snare drum or pad is conveniently placed in front of you. This applies to both a sitting and standing position. Those who use the traditional grip often tilt their snare drum or pad so that the left side is slightly higher than the right. This is done to accommodate the turning motion in the left hand.Settin
By: Eric Starr Not all of us instinctively possess a good internal clock. The good news is that you can develop excellent time by first, being aware of its importance; second, by evaluating your own playing; and, third, by doing something constructive about it. One way to develop good time is to play along with recordings. These days there is an overabundance of CDs available to you. Once upon a time, the only drummers who appeared on records were quality players. Now, any Tom, Dick, or Harry can make a CD in a home studio, so you have to be careful in your selection. You want to play along with the best, not the kid next door who has rushing and dragging problems. In Appendix A, you will see a list of professional drummers together with some of their most significant recordings. All of these drummers play with good time, though some of the studio players such as Vinnie Colaiuta, JR Robinson, Hal Blaine, Jeff Porcaro, Jim Keltner, Larry London, and others have a particularly acute sense

A great bucket drumming group in Chicago. Love the way they are all synchronized. It just looks really cool. I wonder how many hours of practice it took for them to get that good.Tags: bucket drumming, music, youtube, video, video of the day, videorambler
This clip has been around for ages but that doesn’t make it any less brilliant. It shows 2 child drummers who are absolutely excellent at playing even at the tender young age that they are. Isaiah is 4 years old and Abdoulaye is only 2, or at least they were when these films were taken. These were posted by a musician called rootsymali who tries to keep alive and preserve the West African djembe culture through multimedia and technology. He has a website at Rootsy Records so if you are interested in what he has to say, pay him a visit. Meanwhile, I’ll just sit back and watch these amazing kids playing the drums as if they were born to do so.

The First Presbyterian Liturgical Drummers gathered worshipers on Evolution Sunday. Click the pic to see and hear them on YouTube. (Turn it up!) Last Fall, our drummers made their own traditional African drums. We will provide another opportunity for folks to make a drum and learn to play it this year. We can expect more drumming in worship at First Pres! On Sunday, our liturgical drummers gathered us to worship with a traditional African piece entitled, Moribayassa: "If a woman has a really big problem, such as illness in the family or childlessness, when she has exhausted all other resources, as her last hope she takes a vow: 'When this huge difficulty is over, I will dance Moribayassa.' Between this decision and the dance, years may pass. For this dance, the woman dresses and shows herself in a way that she normally would never dare to do; she wears old, torn clothes, shows her naked legs, and behaves like a crazy woman who is allowed to break all taboos.
