As of last Thursday, 46% of Alabama is under an exceptional drought, which is the most critical level. 99% of the state is experiencing some level of drought, with only the coastal areas escaping the arid conditions. The long range forecast is not predicting any relief anytime soon. So how is the drought effecting the Dothan area water supply? Should Dothan residents be as concerned as some residents in north Alabama and north Georgia? At this point in time, it doesn’t appear that we have to be overly concerned, just ever mindful of our usage.

I took these photographs on a trip to the Angostura lake, as you can see the water level is well below the stone walls that you can see on the right of the photographs. Five years ago the water level was at the brim of the stone walls, frequently leaking into the gardens of the houses by the lake. Now, there is a long beach from the stone walls to the lake.Since the worsening of the "el niño/la niña" phenomenon the drought in Cochabamba has accelerated and this only seems to get worse with the global warming. It is difficult to know how this will develop in the future, but at the current rate if nothing changes I think this lake will disappear by the end of this decade.

As most of you are aware, I am back in Georgia, where I was born and raised, and the big news, as it always is in an agricultural state (yes, GA is an agricultural state, ask anyone but the recent transplants to ATL) is the weather, particularly the rain, of which there hasn’t been enough of here in several years.
More than a quarter of the Southeast is covered by an “exceptional” drought — the National Weather Service’s worst drought category. Georgia is smack in the middle of the affected area, which extends like a dark cloud over most of Tennessee, Alabama and the northern half of Georgia, as well as parts of North and South Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia.
The whole state is a condition of drought (map) with the northern portion of the state recently moved into a “level 4″ drought category, meaning that, well, it means you can’t water your lawn. Almost everything else is exempted, particularly anything that generates tax revenue.

The Birmingham Water Works has issued a Stage 3 drought alert limiting what days you can water your lawn. They have also requested that you don't wash you cars, trucks, etc... until further notice. In Tennessee the question is whether a prolonged drought will cause the Jack Daniel's Distillery to curtail production.The Lynchburg, Tenn., distiller gets its water from Cave Spring on its property. The water has a low iron content, which the distillery says is a key part of the Jack Daniel's process. The flow from Cave Spring is down by more than a third of its normal rate.The distillery, other businesses, farmers and homeowners who like green lawns are hoping that rainfall in Tennessee and elsewhere in the southeast returns to normal. Jack Daniel's has not cut back on production at this point, but is conserving water as part of its plans for dealing with the drought.

Reigning world champion Fernando Alonso says he now understands why his predecessor at McLaren, Kimi Raikkonen, failed to be a contender for the drivers' title last year.
