Jermain Defoe has apparently held talks with Aston Villa in the last 24 hours with a fee of 10-12 million being reported. I like him as a player but there is no point in him warming our bench for another couple of years which looks likely under Ramos. I'm sure he'll do well for Villa and the simple fact is with Keane and Berbatov both fit, he's only ever going to be a squad player. I wonder if it
A Bin The Knife wheelie bin has been left outside 10 Downing Street in readiness for the next cabinet meeting. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister confirmed that after the spate of back stabbings amongst Labour Ministers that it was a precautionary measure.
Local MP Edward Timpson was down in London last week presenting a petition against the downgrading and disbanding of the local First Responder service. He was joined by campaigners Cllr Bill McGinnis and Ann Ostredge, Rachael Broadhurst (who recently lost her husband after First Responders were not allowed to attend a road traffic accident) and a Cheshire First Responder..Edward Timpson said: "I a
Only Russians can manage such things without consequences...He should have down some beer instead :)Man nearly dies downing vodka at airport4:38 p.m. PT Dec 12, 2007BERLIN - A man nearly died from alcohol poisoning after quaffing two pints of vodka at an airport security check instead of handing it over to comply with new rules about carrying liquids aboard a plane, police said Wednesday. The incident occurred Tuesday at the Nuremberg airport, where the 64-year-old man was switching planes on his way home to Dresden from a vacation in Egypt.New airport rules prohibit passengers from carrying larger quantities of liquid onto planes, and he was told at a security check he would have to either throw out the bottle of vodka or pay a fee to have his carry-on bag checked.Instead, he chugged the vodka — and was quickly unable to stand or otherwise function, police said.A doctor called to the scene determined he had possibly life-threatening alcohol poisoning, and he was sent to a Nuremberg c
Josh Marshall reports “someone in the Spanish government has leaked to El Pais transcripts of conversations between President Bush and then Spanish Prime Minister Aznar just before the outbreak of the Iraq War. The gist seems to be that Bush was rather candid about the fact that the efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis were a sham and that the war was a done deal.” Following is from the Google translation:
According to Blix, Iraq was taking steps towards an active cooperation to solve the pending subjects of disarmament. Its tone had been less critical than the one of its report of the 27 of January of 2003. “Since we arrived at Iraq three ago months we have made more than 400 inspection without previous warning in about 300 places. Until now, the inspectors have not found any of the prohibited arms… If Iraq is decided to cooperate still more closely the period of disarmament through them inspection can still be brief”, it indicated the head of inspectors

Most evenings, Dr. Christine Downing would give a talk related to the next day's itinerary. These are my notes from her lecture.Greek religion began with rituals -- of purification, of protection, etc. It was animist.Jane Ellen Harrison said: in the beginning, there were no gods and goddesses. There were ghosts, angry spirits with humanlike will. There were nymphs, daimones (spirits) in every rock and stream. They were sources of fertility, disease, death, the weather.Human's relationship to them consisted of fear, awe, gratitude.Even later in antiquity the rituals were to prevent/dispel disease, plague, drought, famine, etc. Many spirits were of those killed in battle or unburied. The Furies -- the Erinyes (female spirits of vengeance) -- were fearful and baleful.(Read on...)Also in This Section:Recommended Links: Greece timeline, good websites on Greek religionRecommended Books on Greek mythology and religion

Number 10 Downing Street has opened its famous front door to the public after more than 270 years, with a virtual tour for web users. Visitors can look at rooms, find out historical information and click on objects such as paintings and furniture for extra details. Tony Blair told the BBC the tour was "an excellent way of showing the tremendous history of this building". Tony Blair caused a bit of a fuss today by sending an email in which he implied that the Police would be able to trawl through the proposed Immigration and Nationality Database to check fingerprints and other data against that taken from around 900,000 unsolved crimes. The Superintendents' Association was delighted - another way to solve crimes (and thus improve their performance statistics). Several MPs were very unhappy because they had been assured by ministers that this would not be an implication of the Bill. And the response by a government spokesperson amounted to; 'Well you should have read the small print. It was there in the Bill.' One of the responsibilities of MPs is to scrutinize the actual text of Bills to ensure that they actually say and do what Minister's have glibly promised they will do. Tony Blair is probably only second to Jeffrey Archer in the art of the inaccurate precis, so it is vital that legislation is carefully scrutinized. However the government business
