(It’s that time of year again; my annual letter to my daughter on her birthday.)Miss Bean (or as you now call yourself “Princess Sunshine Sparkles”),Happy 3rd Birthday! I can’t believe how fast this past year has gone by. It amazes me how much you’ve changed in so little time; the transition from a baby to a beautiful, smart, and clever little girl with a strong personality still complet
On the set of her new film The Ugly Truth, popular actress Katherine Heigl was greeted by her future self, circa the year 2020. In unison, Heigl and her future self said that each other looked fabulous and asked each other what their workout secret was. Present Heigl asked her future self to go first, [...]
I just recently re-listened to all three Doves albums and was really struck by their consistency and the group's growth and evolution over the course of a relatively short career. Beginning with Lost Souls (2000) and throughout both The Last Broadcast (2002) and Some Cities (2005) the band has cultivated a distinct and highly expressive style. Each album presents a consistent and rewarding set of
This property went back to the bank on 1/10/2008 for $850,719. It was sold on 2/28/2008 to a couple who spent $789,000. They took out a $700,000 first mortgage, and they took out a $50,000 second on 4/14/2008. They now have $39,000 of their money into this property. Are they in it for the long haul? Or do you think they will abandon ship when the value of this drops down to about $600,000?

From Rolling Stone magazine : Quietly, while Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been inspiring Democrats everywhere with their rolling bitchfest, congressional superduo Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have completed one of the most awesome political collapses since Neville Chamberlain. At long last, the Democratic leaders of Congress have publicly surrendered on the Iraq War, just one year after being swept into power with a firm mandate to end it. Solidifying his reputation as one of the biggest pussies in U.S. political history, Reid explained his decision to refocus his party's energies on topics other than ending the war by saying he just couldn't fit Iraq into his busy schedule. "We have the presidential election," Reid said recently. "Our time is really squeezed." Th
Severe storms delivered a sucker punch to my tornado stricken city today. In a mass demonstration of inanimate fatalism, hundreds of skyscraper windows leapt from the safety of their casings and plummeted to the sidewalk leaving the streets covered in sparkling shards of glass.Driving home from an afternoon meeting, I saw people of all kinds standing in the rain holding anti-war signs on a street corner.I stopped at a red light and looked around at my fellow commuters. Most of them seemed oblivious to the protest on the sidewalk.I wondered if the protesters felt ignored.A young, African American woman in a bright, orange rain coat held up a sign that said,"No Torture."Her message reminded me of that photo of a hooded Iraqi prisoner trying to comfort his visiting son and a post I read offer
Our Christmas card picture this year of Jack and Adam. Details to notice 1) The double bruise on Jack’s forehead from slamming his face on the basement stairs and an unsuccessful attempt at tackling Adam 2) The matching Rugby shirts. I’m not a huge advocate of dressing the boys in the same outfit but Kathleen asks so little of me I felt this was a concession I could make 3) Adam’s teeth. 13 months old and the kid’s already got a set of choppers 4) The early formation of a vampire fang in the upper corner of Adam’s mouth 5) Adam’s red pupils. Irrefutable evidence that Adam is the evil yet lovable spawn of Satan 6) Though you can’t see it I’m tickling them with one hand while I snap the picture with the other. I know I’m their father, but good god these are a couple of good looking kids.
(Quick post tonight. I’d apologize but I think it may be a relief to many. Not to worry. I’ll be back to my epic posts tomorrow.)
So You Would Like to Add Doves to Your Collection? I have received many questions from people who keep pigeons about adding doves to their collections. So when I was asked if I would be interested in writing an article for the Los Angeles Pigeon Club, I thought this would be a great time to address this topic. Like many of you, I started keeping pigeons when I was very young. My love and interests grew for the birds as did my desire to keep different species. I raised Homers, Tumblers and Rollers and learned that methods of keeping varied between these types of pigeons. I also discovered that I had to provide differently for the pheasants I added to my collection. Even more differences were found when I wanted to add Ringneck doves, Diamond doves and now the many species of Exotic doves to my collection. If you already have pigeons, you know the basic needs in housing, feeding, watering, and possibly breeding your birds. I will not attempt to detail each process from start to finish
The toilet Paper sees signs of a split within the Bush administration on Iran policy and that language in the President’s speech on Thursday “reflected an intense and continuing struggle between factions within his administration over how aggressively to confront Iran.” This “struggle” has been ongoing between Secretary of State Rice and her State Department diplomatic mentality and Vice President Cheney’s office. Further distinguishing between the two approaches is The Times description of State and Rice reflecting: “the more diplomatic view advocated by the State Department, which has pushed for a more restrained tone in America’s dealings with the world in general, and Iran in particular.” And the VP’s office as: “Mr. Cheney and hawks in his office, however, have become increasingly frustrated with the slow pace of progress in curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.” One side the doves, the other hawks. Interestingly, the “dove” appro
This strictly limited-edition box set features the Some Cities CD, bonus DVD (PAL/Region 0) and an exclusive art poster with the linen bound box featuring unique and exclusive artwork. The bonus DVD features a short film (approx 11 mins) of the 'making of' the album titled "Cities Under Construction", plus a photo gallery (set to an exclusive album instrumental) and the Director's Cut of the video for "Black and White Town" by acclaimed Director Lynne Ramsay. If the first two Doves albums, Lost Souls and The Last Broadcast, were records that sounded like they were conceived in Glastonbury-like vast open plains, each number a snapshot of the wide open countryside or of the rolling sea, then their third album, Some Cities, paints altogether different pictures. At points it's crunching and urban, sounding like a midnight high-speed joy ride through the industrial beating heart of the city (most noticeably on the turbo charged first single "Black and White Town"). At others, it's like
'Lost Souls' is the debut album from Mancunian band, Doves.Soulful vocals are fused with lush guitars and sombre pianos. More melancholy and less upbeat than their follow up 'TheLast Broadcast'. Includes the singles 'The Cedar Room', 'Catch The Sun' and 'Man Who Told It Everything'.In an about-face that will infuriate technophiles, this group of dance revisionists celebrate guitars and "real instruments" in the face of processed music. The Williams brothers and their mate Jim Goodwin first had a hit with the disco-charged "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)", but disillusionment with the Manchester scene set in, so they picked up guitars and formed Doves--a band determined to infuse raw emotion into music. From instrumental opener "Firesuite"--which showcases their rumbling, restrained guitar firepower--to the tumbling acoustic shanty "Sea Song", the Latin guitar lines of "The Man Who Told Everything", the balmy Technique-era New Order rocker "Catch The Sun" and the aqueous, soar
If only animals and other creatures can converse to us in the universal language, then perhaps we would become more cautious on the things that we do. Among these things include waste management and pollution concerns. Animals see our world in another way, the way that most of us are perhaps blind to see.

"Who are these that fly along like clouds, like doves to their nests?Isaiah 60:8 Doves symbolize transcendence, eternity, timelessness, faith, and hope. The dove is universally a symbol of peace, purity, love and tenderness. Doves are timeless creatures. The dove has been a powerful human symbol since antiquity. In the biblical creation story, Noah sent a dove from the ark three times. When the dove returned with an olive leaf in its beak, there was hope in the midst of the treacherous flood. Later Christians used the dove to symbolize the Holy Ghost over the Christ's head, associating the dove with transcendence and compassion. Much later, the legendary artist Pablo Picasso used stylized doves to evoke peace, enlightenment, and immortality. The sighting of a dove is auspicious in every world culture. In China a dove seen at life events is a sign of longevity. In Japan, a dove along with a sword to represents the nation's commitment to peace. In all nations, two doves shown paired tog
American politics is characterized sometimes as a continuum, and the traditional strategy to become the leader of a party is to run first to that party's outer extreme, and then at some point shift direction and run back to the center. Thus, a Democrat will appeal to the left wing during the primaries and after securing the nomination, start to sound more moderate in an effort to appeal to the broad center of the electorate. The converse is true for Republicans; they run first to the right and then to the center. All very conventional and familiar to us all.So, the spat between Barack Obama and John McCain over the future of the Iraq war can be viewed through two lenses. The first is that these are two legislators having a debate over the best choice for the future policy of the country -- in other words, they're doing their jobs as Senators. That's certainly a fine way to look at it, but I'm far too cynical to suggest that's what's really going on, which is why I reminded y
Neil Young - Hawks & Doves(1980)320kbpsFollowing the triumph of Rust Never Sleeps, Hawks & Doves benefited from the enormous critical goodwill Neil Young had amassed, though fans and critics nevertheless were baffled by its set of obscure acoustic and country-tinged songs. The seven-plus-minute "The Old Homestead" (copyright 1974) was interpreted by some as an allegory for Young's relationship to CSNY, perhaps because that was the only way to make any sense of the most mysterious Young lyric since "The Last Trip to Tulsa." In retrospect, now that it's known Young was distracted by domestic medical concerns while working on the album, its theme of perseverance in the face of adversity, both in a personal context of family commitment ("Stayin' Power," "Coastline"), and in a national context of hard work and patriotism ("Union Man," "Comin' Apart at Every Nail," "Hawks & Doves") seems more apparent, as does the sense that Young may have been trying to fulfill his recording contrac

Released as a promotional vehicle for Lost Souls by Heavenly in a run of only 1,250 copies, Lost Sides collects 12 songs that didn't make it onto Doves' debut album. All of the songs on the collection would see release across the various singles extracted from Lost Souls. Unlike many a Brit-pop B-side collection, Lost Sides doesn't really work that well as
