Doping Controversies And The Tour De France
Doping and Tour De France have a long history together. This year too, all hopes of a dope free Tour were dashed as doping reared its ugly head with two riders testing positive. Every year the organizers and the WADA speak tough on doping, urging the cyclists to compete cleanly, but their pleas are often fallen on deaf and stubborn ears. The Tour, considered to be the holy grail of cycling, the ul

Some Athletes’ Genes Help Outwit Doping Test
The 55 men in a drug doping study in Sweden were normal and healthy. And all agreed, for the sake of science, to be injected with testosterone and then undergo the standard urine test to screen for doping with the hormone. The results were unambiguous: the test worked for most of the men, showing that they had taken the drug. But 17 of the men tested negative. Their urine seemed fine, with no excess testosterone even though the men clearly had taken the drug.It was, researchers say, a striking demonstration of a genetic discovery. Those 17 men can build muscles with testosterone, they respond normally to the hormone, but they are missing both copies of a gene used to convert the testosterone into a form that dissolves in urine. The result is that they may be able to take testosterone with i

Doping - Could it be any worse?
On the back of the recent doping news, namely Operation Raw Deal and the fact that Michael Rasmussen returned a "non-negative" test from this year's Tour de France, comes a perhaps not so shocking admission by Canadian mountain bike superstar Genevieve Jeanson. In an interview with Radio Canada, she admitted to taking EPO since she was sixteen years old. She is now 26 and has been out of racing since July 2005 when she tested positive for EPO at the Tour of Toona. She received a lifetime ban from USA Cycling (from whom she had a racing license) which was later brokered down to a two-year ban ending in July of this year. For anyone who has read Matt Rendel's The Death of Marco Pantani, Jeanson's case is yet another in which an athlete's entire career was based on the abuse of EPO. More to the point, it is another career filled with medals and victories based on the systematic use and abuse of performance enhancing drugs. Both Pantani's and Jeanson's stories show us that although

Golf Sets Doping Policy on Steroids?!?
This is kinda funny that pro-golfers have to use steroids!?! Well, I’d let them use it since steroids probably messes up your game more than it helps especially under those high pressure situations where you gotta sink a 2-footer to win. How’s steroid going to help you in that case? Maybe you will hit it with more confidence? LOL The issue of steroids has finally reached the golf world. On the same day that American Floyd Landis was banned for doping and stripped of his 2006 Tour de France Title, several golf organizations signed an anti-doping policy. The policy comes after weeks of speculation of when professional golf would start taking the same steps that other professional sports were taking in tackling the problem of steroids. via skinnymoose confidence, floyd landis, footer, Golf Humor, Golf News, golfers, golf organizations, golf world, kinda funny, lol, pressure situations, professional golf, professional sports, speculation, steroid, steroids, stripped, tour d

London May No Longer Be A Doping Mecca
It’s a good idea to do certain things if your city is set to host the Olympics. These things include building new stadiums, hiring proper security, and ensuring that the public transportation is adequate. Also, it’s probably a good idea to make blood doping illegal. With the 2012 Olympics just five years away London may soon join the anti-doping party. The leading medical adviser to the Games, professor Arne Ljungqvist, has recommended to the London 2012 organizers that they press the government to make doping a criminal offense. Ljungqvist believes that unless legislative changes are made, it will be significantly easier to cheat at the London games than it was at past Olympics. Because possession of doping substances is illegal in Italy, last winter police were able to conduct a raid of Austrian rooms in Turin that uncovered a full scale doping laboratory. Under the current laws in England, police would not have been able to conduct that raid. It’s good to see

Well, we did our best. We tried hard to write Tour de France posts without referring to doping or making lame science jokes about doping in some way. But just when we thought we might make it to Paris having seen a great, competitive Tour, which could have been remembered for the ferocious attacks launched by the climbers on the way up to Tignes, the Galibier and Plateau de Beille, it now seems we have a Tour that may again be remembered for the wrong reasons. First Michael Rasmussen, yellow jersey wearer and aspirant Tour champion hits the headlines for failing to give notice of where he was training leading up to the Tour. That in itself is no problem, he has done nothing wrong, but all of a sudden, journalists and riders are debating doping again. Then today, Alexandre Vinokourov, the hero of the race, the poster boy for the human spirit, is reported to test positive for a homologous blood transfusion. Pakistan ‘vindicated’ in doping case
Pakistan fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif look set to escape any further doping sanctions after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said it was unable to hear their case. In a statement released today, CAS said it was forced to dismiss an appeal brought by the World Anti-Doping Agency since the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) does not recognise the court in its regulations. Shoaib and Asif were handed two-year and one-year bans in November 2006 by the PCB's Anti-Doping Commission after testing positive for the banned steroid nandrolone, but the punishment was controversially lifted one month later by the board's Anti-Doping Appeals Committee. Announcing its decision "with considerable regret", CAS said its rules "require that a direct reference to the CAS be contained in the statutes or regulations of the body whose decision is being appealed." More on Doping - Can it guarantee performance enhancement?
Thanks to Luckylab and bikejenbike for their comments on the earlier post (Shadow of doping, 23 June). This post will address those comments.First, for a quick and easy (and disturbing and fascinating) read on the East German doping "machine" of the 1950's to 1990, read Faust's Gold by Steven Ungerleider (pic below).Luckylab asked in a comment about how much doping actually helps, while bikejenbike wondered how the smaller American swimmers actually beat the East Germans from time to time. One thing we touched on briefly was that we do not know the real effect of all the different performance-enhancing drugs. This would require loads of studies that investigate each drug individually, and also in conjunction with other drugs (since often they are taken in combo with each other). The ethical issues here are too numerous to list, and that is why this research remains largely unperformed. Having said that, however, see the previous post that looks at the article of Franke and Berendonk,

Drugs work - but by how much? A look at doping and performance improvements
Performance enhancing substances - do they work? And by how much? It's a relevant question, and I thought it would be good to have a look at the answers. I was going to write an article on the Ethiopian dominance of long distance running in the last ten years, but we've been receiving such thoughtful comments and questions from people regarding our posts on drug use in cycling that I thought it might be better to continue on this theme and look at just what a scientist makes of the prevalence of doping in sport. I also said I'd look at altitude training, and I will, but I'll do that tomorrow. For now, we keep going on doping.Yesterday LuckyLab asked how much of a difference doping actually made? And unfortunately, it's quite difficult to get hold of that information! As you can imagine, it's difficult enough to find out who is doping and with what, never mind trying to track their improvements in a controlled manner! And make no mistake - this information exists, because

A culture of doping in cycling? Anything that could go, must
Yesterday (23 June), I wrote two posts about the ominous shadow of doping in cycling, with the Tour de France coming up. In one post, I gave the example of how Bjarne Riis, the winner of the 1996 Tour, recently admitted to doping. The problem is that he does not appear to be an isolated case, and even within that race of 1996, the top 4 riders all have some sort of history or track record of doping. The same goes for every single winner of the Tour de France since 1996 - either they are known drug users, or they are rumoured to have doped (with plenty of circumstantial evidence), or they are currently being tried (as in the case of Floyd Landis). And so I wrote that the "deeper you dig, the uglier it gets" for the sport of cycling. And in response to this, Lei and LuckyLab posted interesting comments on the use of EPO when altitude training would work (check them out in that post on the 23/6).So I thought it would be good to do a post on the culture of cycling and why exactly it seems t

      Wheelchair Athlete Barred For Doping
Seriously. Click here.Wheelchair tennis player Meliha Karic was banned for two years for testing positive for a banned stimulant. The International Tennis Federation said the 27-year-old Frenchwoman tested positive at the British Open wheelchair championships in Nottingham, England, on July 25 for adrafinil or modafinil metabolite. The ITF said Karic had taken the substance in medication and not to enhance performance, but suspended her because she failed to take "personal responsibility" to ensure the ingredients were allowed under anti-doping rules.
