As the days go by, the public gets wearier and wearier of being led by a man and group that don't have the same goals in mind as we do. A few days ago I had the pleasure of watching Superman: Doomsday, a direct-to-DVD adaption of DC comic's classic Death of Superman storyline. This storyline, which when collected in trade paperback, became the biggest selling graphic novel of all-time. While the movie did steer pretty far away from its comic source, it was still an enjoyable film that I recommend to Superman and comics fans.For those who don't know, DC comics made worldwide headlines in the early 90s by killing off (temporarily obviously) their most popular character, Superman. The Doomsday Clock was started in 1947 by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. The clock represents how far humanity is from destroying itself with midnight representing destruction. It was originally developed during the nuclear threat and minutes have been added and taken away based on political factors throughout the world. Environment and technology along with nuclear threats are now factored into movement of the clock. On 1/17/07 the clock was moved from seven minutes to five minutes. Who do we have to thank for the time change- the usual suspects the U.S., Russia, Iran and North Korea as well as any number of terrorist groups trying to get their hands on a bomb. Since then it has been an ongoing symbolic image that periodically changes to reflect new threats or treaties that influence the likelihood of nuclear holocaust.This week, the clock was moved forward two minutes to stand at 5 minutes to midnight (aka "doomsday").
