Striking Out as a Diabetic Blood Donor
By Sean KelleyEvery eight weeks, I donate blood. Despite a pronounced needle phobia, I do it for two reasons: One, as a diabetic, I get more than my fair share of attention from the medical community, and dropping a pint in the blood bank is a way to give back. But the second reason is not about altruism. I also give for points. Just like an airline loyalty program, I earn 10,000 points per pint.

Top Labour donor cautious amid dodgy dealings
As a result of the dodgy donations by David Abrahams, one of Labours top donors, Willie Haughley, has said he will stop donating to the party until the funding crisis is over. When someone is banged up, presumably. If those enthusiastic enough to give money to political parties are stopping doing so it's only indicative of the wider distrust with which people regard politicians. Donorgate has seriously undermined Labour and looks even worse because of Brown's constant preaching about his moral compass. In scandals such as this, all politicians get tarred with the same brush which is why Cameron has frequently been heard saying that "we all get things wrong in party funding" in order not to appear as someone engaging in ecstatic schadenfreude at Labour's expense. The public don't like gloating and it would be unwise to do so as Ashcroft is hardly whiter than white.

Parties given funds to understand donor rules
In what can only be described as another shining example of a waste of public funds, the BBC reports that the Electoral Commission divvied up £700k between the parties to help them understand the new laws on donations over £5,000.The Electoral Commission - the UK's naffest quango - gave £180,000 in 2001/2002 to the Labour party with the dodgy donations from David Abrahams starting the following year. A spokesperson for the Electoral Commission said the money was to be used to hire new staff or implement new systems. Like honesty? As Matthew Parris reported early this scandal isn't even that impressive - the Labour party can't even do corruption properly. This new piece of information makes the story even more farcical and adds insult to injury. Aside from the obvious lack of a "moral compass" the party was even given funding to help understand the laws. What was the money spent on, then? Did the Electoral Commission monitor how the money was spent? Does ANYONE in government monito

People aren’t the only ones who need blood in an emergency. Many dogs and cats lives are saved because of blood that’s donated by other pets. It seemed like an average day when Karen Price got the call. The caller was Allison Osborne, the owner of Diesel, a Great Dane. Price needed Diesel at the hospital immediately. Price, the owner of South Paws Doggie Daycare in Hanover — the Great Dane’s babysitter — offered to drive him. “I try not to get too personal so when she called I thought that maybe there was a family emergency,” Price said. “Or my other thought was that he had some blood work done and had gotten some bad results.” But neither was the case. As Price brought Diesel to Osborne, who works as a veterinarian technician at Roberts Animal Hospital, Osborne explained the reason for the call.’ “Thanks,” she said. “He’s got to give blood. There’s an emergency.” It turns out that people aren’t the only ones who need blood transfusions. And an

The designs are smart and funny and sometimes bitter or ironic without having to use offensive language or cheap humor to deliver their message. What can I say? The Art Donor is one of these shops that I wanna keep coming back! The t-shirts cost $24.95 and there's a section with posters and stickers too, but I truly recommend you to read the "About" section if you're in a mood for some good reading.

      The Big Donor Show
It is rare when the Dutch make international news but when they do, it’s because they do something outrageous and controversial. How about a reality show where there is a dying woman who wants to donate a kidney before she dies and three contestants sit in anticipation as to who will live a long and healthy life with her kidney; that’s pretty out there don’t you think? Lisa, 37, was dying from an inoperable brain tumor and had roughly 6 months to live. She does have an organ donor card so when she dies her organs will be used but she wants to do it while she is alive; her kidney. Based on histories, stories and conversations she has three people to choose from out of 25 she originally started with but eliminated for a variety of reasons. Now just like any reality show just as Idols or Dancing with the Stars, you call in or text your vote to see who will win! People actually sms’d or called to vote for one of the three based on the stories they were hearing. Dutc

The Big Donor Show was worth watching
Follow up to my previous post The Big Donor Show. It's all over. Bart was on dialysis for 13 years before having a kidney transplant. Before he died in his 30s his founded BNN (Bart Nederland Network) with fun shows. The audience was filled with transplant survivors and they covered the donor crisis in the Netherlands. The number of donors is actually decreasing whilst more than 200 people die a year waiting for organs. Most European countries have a policy where you are a donor unless you opt-out but Holland has an opt-in policy. Lisa (the donor) firstly selected from 25 compatible recipients removing those over 50, the very young and both smokers and ex-smokers. From there she whittled the list down to 3 possibilities who appeared on the show. She then asked the possible recipients questions about how they live and what they would do after their

      The Big Donor Show
Next week the Dutch broadcaster BNN will broadcast their new Big Brother style show named "The Big Donor Show". You have probably heard about this as I first heard about it from a kiwi. A 37 year old woman dying from a brain tumour will decide from 3 contestants via SMS voting who gets her kidneys. Normally cancer patients cannot donate organs but the exception is brain tumours. I don't know what the legal aspects of this are but certain in NZ people cannot sell their organs but they can donate their kidneys and bits of liver to whom they choose (relative, friend etc) providing they are healthy. As I see it there is one major advantage of airing the show and that is to perhaps highlight the lack of organ donors around the globe. However I doubt this is their message. I can't stand these sorts of shows so we don't plan to watch it.

Sperm Donor to Lesbian Couple Ordered to pay Child Support
I know how stupid that sounds, but it is true. Read about it here. Jodilynn Jacob, 33, and Jennifer Lee Shultz-Jacob, 48, moved in together as a couple in 1996, and were granted a civil-union license in Vermont in 2002. In addition to conceiving the two children with the help of Frampton — a longtime friend of Shultz-Jacob’s — Jacob also adopted her brother’s two older children, now 12 and 13. But the women’s relationship fell apart, and Jacob and the children moved out of their Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, home in February 2006. Two women enter into a civil union, they love and care for each other. They decide to have children together. The only problem is… well you know what the problem is. They have a mutual friend who donates sperm to them so they can have children. They go through a divorce and because they are both woman there is no man to make pay child support, the courts go after the sperm donor, and win. This is just the beginning.
