"Everyone's Going Ape Over Doneky Kong!", that's the tagline from the classic Nintendo arcade game that swung it's way to our hearts back in 1981. Since then, it's has jumped from one console platform to another and has now made a leap into the paper world. It's been transformed to paper courtesy of designer ryo007,...
Donkey Kong (ドンキーコング, Donkī Kongu)is an arcede game that was released by Nintendo in 1981. The game is an early example of the platform genre as the gameplay focuses on maneuvering the main character across a series of platforms while dodging obstacles. The storyline is thin but well-developed for its time. In it, Mario (originally called Jumpman) must rescue a damsel in distress, Pauline, from a giant ape named Donkey Kong. The hero and ape went on to become two of Nintendo's more popular characters-wikiDonkey Kong Papercraft
Today Nintendo adds new classic games to the popular Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9AM Pacific time. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at stores like Amazon (see to your right).
If you hear a rumbling on the roof tonight, don’t assume that it’s reindeer and Santa when there are gorillas on the loose. Yes, this week’s merry Wii Shop Channel lineup includes Donkey Kong Country 3! We’ve included videos of each of today’s games for nostalgia’s sake or so you can see if it’s for you. This week’s new games are:
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble (Super NES, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points = $8): Revisit Donkey Kong Island and join the Kong family for their latest adventure. The Kremlings have a mysterious new leader named KAOS and are up to their usual mischief, even capturing Donkey
Q: How do you go about promoting general awareness and marketability of a classic game museum in 1 easy step?A: Create a replica of Donkey Kong's construction site stage off the side of a building using its scaffolding as its basis. For all the sticky note pixel art advertising and Space Invaders graffiti, I believe that this piece of marketing (which I found over at Hobby Blog via UrbanRetro and Adverbox) may very well be the best I've seen for attempting to drive up support for a cause. For more information on the Classic Game Museum in Berlin, their current mission statements, and partnership opportunities (they are attempting to try to reopen a new permanent exhibit), check out their home on the web here.

I am working on something big but am pretty much taking the day off from significant posts. (By the way, enter my free album giveaway!)I do have an exceptional song to share with you today. Portland's Another Cynthia is one of my favorite bands in the country. In 2006 I named their self-titled debut CD as my dark horse candidate for album of the year. (Here is a list of the Best of 2006 - Get 'em while you still can!)Right now Another Cynthia is working hard to finish a new album. They recently sent me some demos, which I have been sworn to not share - so I won't. Just know that things are only sounding better in the future. Today's Artist of the Day is Another Cynthia. From their album last year, comes the song: "Donkey Kong." SONG OF THE DAYAnother Cynthia with "DONKEY KONG"Highly Recommended -Another Cynthia - Donkey KongLike What You
This week sees Nintendo of America adding no less than four new classic games to the Wii Shop Channel.
This weeks new games are (as per Nintendos description):
Adventure Island (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): A mysterious tropical paradise known as Adventure Island is the setting for this side-scrolling action game. The evil Witch Doctor has kidnapped Tina, the true love of Master Higgins. To save her, you must safely guide Master Higgins through eight perilous stages - including dense forests and creepy caves - while defeating all of the enemies in your path. Each area is made up of four rounds filled with enemies determined to stop you in your tracks. In addition, as time passes, Master Higgins's vitality is automatically drained. To keep going, he must eat constantly by grabbing fruit, milk and whatever other goodies he can as he races toward his goal. Sometimes eggs containing miraculous items like axes to throw at enemies or honey that grants temporary invincibility will a
Ever heard of this movie? The King of Kong, A Fistful of QuartersI saw the Ebert & Roeper review this weekend, and I'm slightly fascinated. It's basically a real-life Best in Show type of movie. What's fascinating to me is that there are people who give their lives to things like this. Give their stinking life to playing Donkey Kong? Are you kidding me? With all the violence and danger in the world, sometimes I think things like this are the most telling. Have we lost so much meaning for mankind, that grown men can find purpose and satisfaction in a 1980's cartoonish video game? I have a feeling this movie will be a sad commentary on the United States, without even meaning to.Here is a news story video from ABCnews.com
Some of you may recall the King of Kong documentary that is currently making the rounds (trailer above). Though I haven't had a chance to see it yet, I do know what the outcome is in the end. If you wish to be surprised by the documentary, don't continue reading past this point.Essentially, Steve Wiebe despite all of the hardships he suffered during the course of the film breaks the Donkey Kong record and takes his name on top of the high score table that has stood pretty much set in stone since the mid-80's.Hot on the heels of the documentary's impending wide release (late August I believe), Billy Mitchell, the former record holder and self proclaimed World's Greatest Video Game Player has once again proven why his former record was so formidable. On July 14th, Billy Mitchell shattered the previous record set by Steve Wiebe exactly 25 years after he set his original record that stood up until Wiebe was able to capture it earlier this year.

After a bit of trouble I finally have this week's virtual console video demo ready! This week I play Donkey Kong Country, a Super Nintendo game, on the virtual console. This game is quite fun and if you never had a SNES like me, you know you have been missing ...
