Domestic violence can happen to men, not only to women, according to Group Health research in the June American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Domestic violence is alive and well today in the U.S. where women have civil liberties. It most certainly reigns supreme in countries where women have no rights. So it is a world-wide problem and the bad news is it isn't going to go away anytime soon. We could argue that many women don't know any better that verbal and physical abuse is just the way things are: witness the sect in Texas recentl

What we see is a boil of social problems taking place in populations that are used, abused, and discarded in whatever way suits the powerful interests at the helm. Issues of mental illness, cognitive disabilities, personality disorders, unemployment, poverty, gender, politics, the legal system, and education loom large in DV, calling for a biopsychosocial perspective. What better place, then, than BrainBlogger.com for a look at the subject? I'll start with a very good reason for primary care providers to screen for DV, and an initial look at gender issues.
Upon hearing of Cedrick Wilson’s most recent domestic dispute, I assumed Wilson would be cut and Harrison would stay on the team. I had a slightly more cynical logic (Wilson is a spare-parts WR and Harrison is a Pro Bowler), than that professed by Dan Rooney in today’s Post Gazette.

Domestic Violence Remains Major Concern:
By Sasha L. Lightbourne -
Nassau, Bahamas:
Reported domestic disputes decreased from 1,361 cases in 2006 to 1,138 cases in 2007, according to statistic released by the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
However, according to a local psychologist, those numbers may not be a "true reflection" of cases in The Bahamas.
"Domestic violence has been a problem and continues to be a problem and confronts us on a daily basis," said Dr. Sandra Dean-Patterson, who spoke to the Bahama Journal recently.
"Persons live with violent situations daily. The police will tell you and the hospitals will tell you that on a daily basis they see the victims of this violence."
Dr. Patterson said much needs to be done to address domestic violence in The Bahamas.

I'm a survior of Domestic Violence. My last LTR [Long Term Relationship] was good and bad. He and I owned our own business. We traveled around the SE USA. We took trips to Mexico and Costa Rica for business and pleasure. We'd stay for a month or two at each place we lived. We sold Bromeliads and ended up moving down to Florida. We even was able to do Epcot's Flower and Garden Show, Silver Dollar City's Craftsman Fest, Dollywood's Craft Fest, and sold our product to Bush Gardens in Tampa Bay. Was a very exciting life. I loved every minute of it. Our professional relationship was beautiful. We were the greatest team.At home, things were different. Verbal, spiritual, physical, mental and emotional abuse was frequent by him. One of our disagreements turned more physical than ever - He hit me so

Admittedly, the title of this entry was bitten from an ifeminists.com article also called Domestic Violence Is Not A Gender Issue by Erin Pizzy. However, the info here is unique and cites many different references.
For over a decade feminists have been spreading false stats and one-sided theories about domestic violence being perpetrated almost always by males, with females being the victims nearly every time. In light of this information on gender-based violence, Senator Joseph Biden drafted the "Violence Against Women Act" also known as VAWA. This was voted and passed into law, has received billions of dollars of funding, and the National Network To End Domestic Violence has still asked for more and were not happy to be turned down.
Take for example the web site stopvaw.org which has an article called Adapting the Duluth Model for training law enforcement and counselors. The problem with this training model is that it takes on the presumption that battering is essentially caused only

A recent issue of the International Quarterly of Community Health Education (Volume 25) presents the results of a cross sectional study designed to determine how prevalent intimate partner violence was among women of child-bearing age in a migrant community in southwest Nigeria. In examining attitudes towards intimate partner violence. 79.5% of the survey respondents believed that wife beating was justified in at least one of the seven hypothetical situations that were presented. This past Saturday I attended a conference at a local College of Law exploring whether or not domestic violence should be prosecuted as a hate crime. Most of the attendees were law students and lawyers and only one other social-worker "type". I felt we were able to bring a different perspective to how they were looking at current laws in the state of Colorado and how to potentially word new bills. Coming from California, I had no idea about criminalized domestic violence. I learned about that working with some of my single-parent participants when I accompanied them to their civil and criminal cases as witnesses. They were witnesses against their ex-husbands and ex-boyfriends; they were not there on the prosecuting side because of our laws. A lot of discussion on this topic on Saturday revolved around how the criminalization caused more problems than it helped. The original intention was to make the penalties for domestic violence more stringent and to ensure that the perpetrators did
Note: I’ve been posting these posters on Friday’s sans commentary in hope’s that it would create a discussion. The only person that’s engaged me in discussion about it has been my mother.
She pointed out that all the women in the pictures look like actresses/models/famous people (which they are), and that it doesn’t seem as real as it does just dressing up. In other words she wondered if these pictures actually force people to think about the reality of domestic violence, or instead make it seem even more fictitious.
I’m curious to know others thoughts. Do these images cause you to think about the reality of domestic violence? Are they just one of the posts you breeze past without much of a thought?
