I was first introduced to Jurancon through a dessert wine poured in a local French bistro here in San Francisco. “Here, try this,” said our waiter and whipped out a few glasses which he filled with a nearly colorless wine with a simple parchment colored label. “Henry the Fourth was baptized in this stuff” he [...]

I could just post a picture, point you to Brooklynguy’s recent write-up of Huet’s Vouvray Pétillant and leave it at that. But that wouldn’t be very bloggerly of me now, would it? I received this bottle as a gift from a friend several months ago and it’s been biding its time in my wine fridge, waiting for the right occasion, ever since. Saturday night turned out to be one of those eveni

The Loire Valley is perhaps one of the most underrated and unexplored (by most Americans) wine producing regions in France. So often eclipsed by the bombast of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Rhone, if it is known at all, the Loire tends to be known for its famous Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre. Yet the region, which [...]
Quando resolvi degustar e comentar sobre esses dois pinots do Novo Mundo sabia que tinha uma tarefa árdua pela frente. Sim, principalmente se a avaliação a que me refiro for positiva. O problema todo está enraizado num velho preconceito.

If you’ve been following this site for a while, you may have noticed that the blogging vehicle has provided me with the inspiration I needed, finally, to chronicle the details of a ten day whirlwind wine tour through Germany and France that I took back in February 2004. A visit at Domaine Barmès-Buecher, stop four of the trip, was the inspiration for the most recent installment. By a chance of timing, it was due up hot on the heels of a recent trip to the east coast by François and Genevieve Barmès. During their visit, I was able to spend a couple of hours catching up with the couple. Neither of them appeared to have aged a bit in the last several years. And as always, once we got him talking, François’ energy level was unbelievable. We managed to squeeze in enough time, just barely, to taste through the lineup of their wines now on the market. So, just in case you didn’t get your fill when reading through my notes on the 28 wines we tasted at the estate a few years ba
Crossing the border into Alsace after a brief two days on the German side of the Rheinland, our first stop in France during a February 2004 wine trek was at Domaine Barmès-Buecher. Situated on the Route des Vins in Wettolsheim, just SW of Colmar in the Haut-Rhin, the estate was founded in 1985, joining the work of the Barmès and Buecher families which had each been involved in some aspect of viticulture since the 17th Century. François Barmès and his wife Genevieve (née Buecher) along with eight full-time employees, farm a total of 16 hectares of vineyard, spanning six different communes in the environ of Wettolsheim, from the Grand Cru sites of Pfersigberg in the south to Hengst in the north. The estate is made up of 96 separate vineyard plots, ranging in size from as large as two contiguous hectares to as small as five or six rows in a particular climat. Our visit there would prove to be one of the most intense of the entire trip.In the Field:François Barmès completed conv
When my best wine friend was in town, I knew I had to take her to Domaine Carneros. Not only do they make great sparkling wine (and KB and I love sparkling wine as much as the Rosenblum staff), but she would get to meet Kenny G. Now, you may know or may have read that Kenny G works four days at Rosenblum and the other three at Domaine Carneros. We went with two other friends, Tricia and Kelly, who also works with me. Of course, Kenny G treated us in style in the section he calls “Prime Time,” as it’s in the front of the beautiful Chateau on the terrace.
Wines can be purchased by the taste, flight, glass, or bottle. We did the sampler, which included the brut, the brut rose’, and the ever-delicious Le Reve. They serve food, and as it’s not good to drink on an empty stomach, we shared a cheese plate and the smoked salmon plate (ok, if you insist….). Sitting in the sun, sipping bubbly, snacking on dried fruit and cheese. I could get used to that
Domaine de la Désoucherie, the estate of Christian Tessier and his son Fabien, sits at one of the highest points in the terrain overlooking the commune of Cour-Cheverny, just west of Blois, in one of the coolest reaches of France’s Loire Valley. In the heart of château country, the estate sits within easy reach of the castles at Chambord, Cheverny, Blois and Beauregard. Though instituted as an AOC only in 1993, Cour-Cheverny can trace its roots back to the early 16th Century, when Francois I brought vine clippings from Burgundy to be planted on the grounds of his castle, Romorantin, designed for him by Leonardo da Vinci. Over the centuries, this vine’s identity became essentially one with the land surrounding Francois’ château; today, the vine is known as Romorantin, its origins in Burgundy all but forgotten. Decidedly one of the more obscure of France’s wine regions, and produced from one of its least known grape varieties, Cour-Cheverny comprises just under 400 hectare

The word “Côtes” crops up in the names of a number of French wine regions, and with good reason: it means “slopes” and slopes make for good drainage and sun exposure – both big plusses for wine grapes. For Domaine Terres de Solence, those good conditions mean they can forego pesticides and other chemicals in favor of 100% organic winegrowing. The “Cippus” Côtes du Ventoux has a satisfying mix of flavors that characterize the southern Rhône: blackberry, smoke, sage, and a touch of black pepper. It’s fairly full-bodied, with smooth tannins.

Today, when so many wines are sold by their varietal name – Cabernet, Chardonnay, etc. - Côtes du Rhône wines are one of the few blends that have taken off with winedrinkers. The Domaine de la Mavette shows why: the Grenache brings notes of cassis and blackberry; the Syrah and Cinsault, touches of clove and lavender; and the Carignan, earthy notes along with some rich, dry tannins. While any one of these might be too much on their own, they blend harmoniously and the whole exceed the sum of the parts.

Domaine Jean Reverdy has 30 acres of vineyards, 9 acres of them being Sauvigonon Blanc. The 2005 Sancerre Le Reine Blanche is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc from a single vineyard, the vines being 25 years or older. It has not seen oak and has not gone through malolactic fermantation.Pale straw in the glass. Citrus, green apple, floral note and a hint of grass on the nose. Citrus, apple and minerals play beautifully with the fresh acidity on the palate. This is a great little bottle of Sancerre. Not to much green vegetables and grass like you can find in some of them. Just a light, slightly fruity wine with great freshness from the lively, not at all tart, acidity.I bought this at my local grocery store for $18.99. A fair price. Find it at Wine-Searcher.com or WineZap.com from $16.99.Vote for my blog here and help me reach top 10 on The Blog TopI am now in top 13!
Domaine A. et P. Villane is located in Bouzeron, Cote Chalonnaise, Burgundy. All the grapes at the Domaine is organically farmed and has been certified since 1986 by Qualice-France. They are hand harvested and thoroughly sorted by hand. To truly capture the terroir the vinification is natural, they only use a small percentage of new oak barrels, and the wine is bottled unfiltered. The Villaines are also co-owner of the highly regarded Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.The 2004 Mercurey Les Montots has a dark red ruby color in the glass. It has green vegetables on the nose that gives way to raspberry and cherry after letting it sit in the glass for 30 min. On the palate: cherries, tart red berries, earth and a kind of gamey taste with great high acidity and medium firm tannins. This wine definitely will benefit from some time in the bottle, or if drinking it now, decant it an hour or so before enjoying it.I really liked this Burgundy and think the price is fair at $35.
