Future Hall of Famer, Greg Maddux was traded to the Dodgers, reports say. What a great deal for the Dodgers. Maddux, who seems to have been on a hundred teams in the past couple years, will be a stable 5th pitcher. He has a 3.99 ERA, and his 6-9 record is misleading, given the fact [...]

On Saturday, the Indians traded third baseman/utilityman extraordinaire/Mr. Clutch Casey Blake to the Dodgers for two prospects. From the Indians' standpoint, it's hard not to like this trade. Blake will be a free agent at the end of the year, and his performance over the next two months wouldn't have been particularly valuable for Cleveland. Ridding themselves of Blake will also force Eric Wedge

The Dodgers' quest to be this year's most mediocre playoff team suffered a blow yesterday when it was announced that closer Takashi Saito will be out until late August. Saito was diagnosed with a sprained elbow ligament in his pitching arm after having to leave Saturday's game vs. the Marlins.LA will be without their closer's services for at least six weeks, at which point he will be reevaluted.

Mats Fall Short in LA; Beltran SitsBoxscoreHighlightsIf you were handicapping this game, and you didn't take the Dodgers then you need to find another line of work. The winning pitcher, Kong-Chin Kuo, who came in the game for starter Hiroki Kuroda in the fourth inning, beat the Mets for the third straight time. In 3 and 2/3 work he struck out 8 and limited the Mets to just one baserunner. The Mets led the game early, 3-0 and then 4-1 but starter Nelson Figueroa could not contain Dodger rookie 3b Blake DeWitt. For the second straight night DeWitt victimized Met pitching. In the third inning, DeWitt smacked a 2-run single off Figueroa to narrow the score to 4-3. In the fifth he jacked a shot just out of the reach of a leaping Ryan Church. The ball hit the top of the fence, eluding Met defen
Blake DeWitt went 3-for-4 with four RBI, including the go-ahead, inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning, as the Dodgers defeated the Mets 5-4 at Chavez Ravine. DeWitt's drive off the top of the right-field fence scored Russell Martin in front of him to erase a 4-3 deficit and put LA ahead for good. Juan Pierre had a run-scoring single and stole his 11th base for the Dodgers, who overcame 3-0 and 4-1 deficits. Hong-Chih Kuo got the win in relief and Takashi Saito his fifth save. The Dodgers have won 10 of their last 11 games. Ryan Church went 2-for-5 with a solo homer for New York, which has lost three of its last four. Nelson Figuerora gave up all five runs in five frames to take the loss.
Cinco de mayo was not very kind to Mexico native Oliver Perez.Perez gave up five runs, four of them coming on three Los Angeles Dodgers’ homeruns en route to the defeat. To add injury to insult, Perez took a line drive to the mid section early to the game.Oliver was able to stay in the game and looked gutsy at times, only walking two batters and challenging the Dodger hitters, but three of those challenges went beyond the fences at Dodger Stadium, including Rafael Furcal’s lead-off shot on an 0-2 pitch and Blake DeWitt’s first career dinger.Perez gave as much effort as he could to silence teammate Billy Wagner who challenged Oliver to “step up” after his last performance of one and two-thirds innings. In addition to his six innings of work, Perez covered first base well, including

Assuming the Los Dodgers keep up their torrid pace, they may supplant Arizona atop the National League West standings in a very short span of time; the team's "hero du jour" (hero of the day in French) in their game Thursday against the Florida Marlins was Matt Kemp as he had a tie-breaking base hit in the 9th inning, leading Los Angeles past Florida 5-3 at Dolphin Stadium. Los Angeles was led by Juan Pierre with 2 hits, including a double, a stolen base, a run scored and 2 RBIs. The winning pitcher was Joe Beimel (3-0) who pitched 1/3 of an inning while Takashi Saito notched his 4th save. Florida was led by Matt Treanor with 2 hits and a run scored while Cody Ross hit his first home run of the season, adding a run scored and 2 RBIs. A rather sad event took place in the world of baseball as according to Bill Bavasi, Seattle Mariners general manager, former Dodgers GM Buzzie Bavasi passed away on Thursday; he was 93. Bavasi was the chief architect of the Dodgers teams - both the Brooklyn and Los Angeles franchises - that would win four World Series titles; Bavasi's Dodgers teams included such greats as Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. Bavasi would later become part-owner and president of the San Diego Padres before becoming executive vice president of the Califonia - now Los Angeles - Angels. Bavasi spent 44 years working in baseball - including 34 at the major league level; he began his career as a traveling secretary and publicity director for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1939; after serving in
Blake DeWitt drove in four runs as the Dodgers decimated the Marlins 13-1 in the second installment of a three-game series at Dolphin Stadium. Russell Martin was 2-for-2 with a homer, three walks, three runs scored and an RBI for Los Angeles, which has won five in-a-row. Matt Kemp had three hits, three RBI and two runs scored, while James Loney smacked a three-run triple in the victory. Chad Billingsley struck out eight over seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball to pick up his first win of the season. Jeremy Hermida plated Florida's only run with an infield single in the fifth. Scott Olsen gave up four runs on seven hits over five frames to fall to 3-and-1. The Marlins were outhit 15-to-5 in the lopsided loss.
Jeff Kent singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and the Dodgers held on to edge the Marlins 7-6 in the opener of a three-game set at Dolphin Stadium. Kent had two hits and three RBI, and Andre Ethier went 2-for-3 and scored three times, as Los Angeles won its fourth straight. Joe Beimel hurled a scoreless eighth inning to move to 2-and-0 with the win. Jorge Cantu was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Florida, which has dropped two-of-three. Kevin Gregg allowed the deciding run to fall to 3-and-1 with the loss.
Chris Young scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and the Diamondbacks went on to beat the Dodgers 6-4 at Chavez Ravine. Jeff Salazar hit a two-run homer, and Conor Jackson had two hits and two RBI, as Arizona split the series to improve to 16-and-6 overall. Edgar Gonzalez gave up three runs in five-and-a-third innings for his first win. Brandon Lyon closed it out for his sixth save. Chad Billingsley fanned 12, but gave up five runs in six frames to fall to 0-and-4 with the loss. Jeff Kent went 2-for-3 with two RBI for LA, which has lost five-of-seven. Nomar Garciaparra had two hits and scored twice in defeat.

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jerry Hairston, Jr., recently called up from their Triple-A club, certainly made an impressive impression upon his team Tuesday as he had 4 hits, leading Cincinnati to a relatively easy 8-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Great American Ball Park. The aforementioned Hairston led the Reds' attack with 4 hits, including a double and 3 RBIs while Joey Votto had 3 hits - including a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI; Adam Dunn and Brandon Phillips added a home run apiece for the Reds. Winning pitcher Edinson Volquez (3-0) got the win as he had another strong outing; Volquez pitched 7 innings, allowing only 3 hits, an earned run, walking 4 while striking out 7. Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Nomar Garciaparra, at long last, is finally getting his offensive game together; he slammed his first home run of the season, leading Los Angeles to an easy 9-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Los Angeles' offensive attack was led by Russell Martin and Andre Ethier with 3 hits each - with Martin hitting a double; Rafael Furcal, Garciaparra and Matt Kemp added 2 hits apiece, with Furcal and Garciaparra hitting a HR each. Winning pitcher Brad Penny (3-2) pitched 6 innings, allowing 6 hits, an earned run, walking 2 while striking out 4; Chan Ho Park notched his 1st save while pitching the final 3 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 earned runs, walking 2 while giving up 2 HRs. Cincinnati was led by Edwin Encarnacion as he went 2-for-4 with a HR, 2 runs scored and an RB
Following the outstanding debut, Valenzuela, nicknamed "El Toro" by fans, settled down into a number of years as a workhorse starter and one of the league's best pitchers. He had his best season in 1986, when he finished 21-11 with a 3.14 ERA and led the league in wins, complete games and innings pitched. He lost a narrow vote for the Cy Young Award to the Astros' Mike Scott. At the 1986 All-Star Game, Valenzuela made history by striking out five consecutive American League batters, tying a record set by fellow left-handed screwballer Carl Hubbell in the 1934 contest. In 1987, he began to slump, dropping off to 14-14 with a 3.98 ERA. By 1988, when he won just five games and missed much of the season (ironically, in a year in which the Dodgers won the World Series), it was obvious he had a de
Los Angeles Dodgers:After acquiring Fernando Valenzuela in the summer of 1979, the Dodgers assigned him to the Lodi Dodgers (now the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes) of the High-A level California League, where he posted a 1-2 record and a 1.13 ERA in limited action. In 1980 Valenzuela was promoted to the AA level San Antonio Missions. There Valenzuela led the Texas League with 162 strikeouts, and ranked third in ERA.Valenzuela was called up to the Los Angeles Dodger bullpen in September of 1980. In the last month of the season, Valenzuela helped the Dodgers to a Western Division tie with the Houston Astros, tossing 17 2/3 shutout innings of relief over the course of ten games, during which he earned two wins and a save. The Los Angeles Dodgers then lost a one-game playoff - and thus the division

[Pirates.com Wrapup]Yeah, as the score indicates, this was an ugly game.Matt Morris is officially killing us in two ways. We always knew we were paying the guy too much (thanks, Littlefield) but (at least some) fans hoped or thought that he would be a mediocre, back-end of the rotation guy who can usually keep the game somewhat close.0-2 with a 7.02 ERA doesn't exactly fit that description. The Bucs' winning streak is snapped at 4 and their record drops to .500 at 7-7. Wait a sec, we're complaining about being .500? It could be worse, people.Kuo was strange in this game. Jeff Kent's three-run homer capped a five-run fifth inning to blow the game open as the Dodgers went on to drill the Pirates 11-2 at Chavez Ravine. Andre Ethier had two hits and two RBI for Los Angeles, which trailed 1-0 until scoring three in the bottom of the fourth. Andruw Jones contributed two hits and scored twice for LA, which won for just the second time in its last eight games. Esteban Loiaza [[ lo-EYE-zuh ]] worked five innings of one-run relief to get the win. Brad Penny will get the start for the Blue Crew in tonight's finale against the Bucs, going up against Paul Maholm. First pitch at the Ravine will be at 7:10.
Pirates (7-6) at Dodgers (5-8)10:10--Dodger Stadium, Los AngelesMatt Morris (0-1, 5.25) vs. Hong-Chih Kuo (0-0, 0.00)[MLB.com GameDay]I'll add in my thoughts, but first, here's Jesse:Before we look at Game 2 of the series, let's see how my predictions went. And YES I DID stay up to watch the game. My breakout pick (Jose Bautista) was 2/4 with a homer. DeWitt did not do much, but did have an RBI single. Also, Freddy did go 3/5 (three hits like I said). I apologize for telling you that the Bucs would win 7-3; they still won, but it was 6-4.---------------Now let's look at Game 2. The pitching match-up is Matt Morris against Hong-Chih Kuo, who has not started a game yet this year. I do not know much about this guy, except for that he replaced Esteban Loaiza in the rotation and he does not see
[Pirates.com Wrapup]YEAH!!!That was my reaction when I woke up this morning and heard the ESPN Radio 10-second summary of this game, because no, I'm not crazy enough to stay up till 1:30 AM to watch the Bucs when I have to get up at 6:00. But you can bet I was fired up when I heard what happened.Zach Duke did what he's done all three starts this year: bend without breaking. He gave up 3 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings. The alarming part: No K's. The good part: he kept the Pirates in the game. If Duke can keep this up the Pirates' rotation all of a sudden looks really promising.Jose Bautista (as Jesse correctly predicted) drilled his first homer of the year to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead. An ugly inning that included a balk and passed ball gave the Dodgers one back. They would scratch anothe
Pirates (6-6) at Dodgers (5-7)10:10--Dodger Stadium, Los AngelesZach Duke (0-0, 2.13) vs. Hiroki Kuroda (1-1, 2.13)[MLB.com GameDay]-------------------------Jesse handles the preview for this one:-The Pirates' confidence is overwhelming coming into this series. They've been getting good starting pitching, are hitting the crap out of the ball, and are finishing games strong in the 'pen. With 2 very good starts already, Zach Duke is very anxious to make his third, which is good to hear. We are going to need all the confidence we can get against this strong Dodgers line-up--despite Los Angeles' recent struggles at the plate. They are not going to hit the long ball very often with this squad, but they will get on base and steal like crazy. Both Ryan Doumit and Ronny Paulino's ability to throw
The Dodgers, surrendering to the wishes of irate fans, announced today they have dropped a new rule and will allow all youngsters to seek autographs in Dodger Stadium in much the same way they have done for years. No comment yet from the rich kids, but now everyone in the stadium will be given the same opportunity to stand on the dirt strip at the end of the Dodgers dugout and be ignored by the players while trying to get an autograph. The Dodgers are still trying to keep the unwashed out of the field-level box seats, and in doing so have designated a taped-off area for autographs. On first glance, kids at the head of the line might have a better chance of getting an autograph than they did last year. The Dentist, the team's new PR guy, said a large number of fans provided "data," using the t
Just two days before undergoing surgery for thyroid cancer, Doug Davis took a shutout into the sixth inning as the Diamondbacks drilled the Dodgers 10-5 at Chase Field. Davis gave up a two-run double to Jeff Kent in the sixth inning, but allowed just six hits and struck out seven for the win. Mark Reynolds clubbed a three-run homer, his fifth of the season, as Arizona won its fifth in-a-row. Conor Jackson contributed two hits and three RBI to the win. Matt Kemp had three hits, and Blake Dewitt went 2-for-4 with two RBI for Los Angeles. Chad Billingsley was charged with the first five runs in less than three innings to suffer the loss.

The EU finance ministers called on the European Commission to bring forward a review of the savings tax directive to May if possible, and then come up with reform proposals "in due time.""The commission will prepare a report on the functioning of the savings taxation directive and on the basis of this report the commission will present some legislative proposals if appropriate," EU Tax Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs told reporters. In its present form, the savings tax directive requires EU members to share tax information with one other on interest income kept by account holders from other EU countries. However, it was only agreed after special arrangements were made for Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg, which were eager to protect their banking secrecy practices.
Five key players from the Dodgers
Oh for the halcyon days of the Paul DePodesta regime. For Dodgers' fans it is not hard to envision a scenario where the Dodgers could be poised on the verge of NL supremacy for the next few years, and could have easily won the division last year. At least they have a new manager this year, one though as a Yankees fan I have repeatedly critiqued over the years
What…the…*(&$#@&*#()*&@*() is going on? On Friday, all looked well. OK, the Sox had lost a couple of games, but hell, its only Spring Training, it doesn’t even count….

Well, Jonathan Papelbon got what he wanted–he broke Mariano Rivera’s record of $750K that he got in 1998 (with the same amount of time in the bigs) by agreeing to a 1 year $775K deal with the Sox yesterday. He also will receive a $25K bonus if he makes the All-Star team…His contract is the [...]
El legendario Tom Lasorda, manager retirado de los Dodgers de Los Angeles, volverá a dirigir la novena californiana en la Liga de la Toronja.

The Dodgers' signing of Andruw Jones is very interesting to me. This was a very unique situation, since it was a marquee player coming off a pretty atrocious (.222/.311/.413) year. This led to the unique contract, considering the current market, of two years and $36.2 million.First of all, let's compare:Torii Hunter, career 104 OPS+ and 14 FRAA, age 32, signs 5 yr, $90MM contractAndruw Jones, career 113 OPS+ and 218 FRAA, age 30, signs 2 yr, $36MM contractWithout considering the circumstances, this is a fantastic deal for the Dodgers. Despite what happened last year, Jones is better than Hunter. He's also two years younger. Yet they were able to land him while committing $54MM less. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everybody the Angels will be paying Torii Hunter $18MM when he is 37.The Dodgers' problem is that it doesn't invalidate Juan Pierre's contract. It also doesn't make him good. So he's still owed $36.5MM over the next four years, and still has ha
By Stephen RhodesI suppose it was a matter of time before the Los Angeles Dodgers decided to get some business done. ESPN is reporting that the Dodgers and ex-Atlanta Braves outfielder Andruw Jones have reached a preliminary agreement on a two-year, $36.2 milion contract. As with all transactions of this magnitude, Jones must first pass a physical for the agreement to be completed. The agreement was first reported on the Los Angeles Times website. Jones will receive a $12.2 million signing bonus, of which $5.1 million is payable next year, $2.1 million in 2009 and $5 million in 2010. He will receive salaries of $9 million next year and $15 million in 2010; he will also receive a no-trade clause. Jones' agent, Scott Boras, wouldn't confirm that the agreement had been signed but sounded as if the deal was inevitable, telling ESPN, "Being on a competitive team was a very, very important part of his process." Jones, while with Atlanta in 2007, hit .222, with 26 home runs, 94 runs b
The Los Angeles Dodgers Monday for the first time in the almost 50 years the franchise has been in L.A. held a press conference in center field in Dodgers Stadium. It was also the first time that Los Angeles had ever hired a high profile manager, as former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre was officially hired as Dodgers manager. The press conference concluded a chaotic week for the Dodgers organization, as rumours of first Joe Girardi, and the Torre surfaced as the new Los Angeles manager. There was only one problem, the Dodgers had a manager that was give public assurance that he would be back. But Grady Little who had spent two seasons as the Dodgers manager did not need a rock to fall on him to tell him he was not wanted. He resigned from the position last week calling it a "mutual resignation."Torre said he was feeling very emotional as he was introduced to the media and the fans of Los Angeles. He also said that he believed the "Dodgers were always special and I certainly expect
He is one of the best managers of all time and he deserves another team. Not the Yankees for sure but the Dodgers.
Joe Torre grew up in Brooklyn rooting against the Dodgers. Now, a half-century after they moved west, he’s their manager.
Torre was hired by Los Angeles to succeed Grady Little on Thursday, taking the job two weeks after walking away from the New York Yankees.
“Joe Torre comes with a great resume,” Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said on a conference call. “What he’s done the last 12 years is as powerful as any manager in recent memory.”
Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre has been hired by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Torre signed a three-year deal worth $13 million. We'll see how he does out there in LA. The Red Sox-Yankees games will feel a little different to me without Torre. Looks like Don Mattingly may join Torre in LA.From a Yahoo! article:Don Mattingly, Torre's bench coach this year, is set to join his mentor in Los Angeles as hitting coach. Mattingly lost out to Girardi for the Yankees' managerial job.
Well, after all the drama with Grady Little and the report of Joe Torre signing a three year deal with the Dodgers, he may not be on board quite yet.According to Yahoo sports, a deal is not done. From Yahoo Sports: "I don't categorize anything as close, far," Colletti said when asked if the parties were nearing an agreement. "It's either done or it's not done. We're still trying to learn about each other. There's been some light discussions to try and get a feel. I'm not going to get into where the negotiations are. It's still early in the process in some ways."Colletti said he first spoke with Torre in the past few days."We've had some conversations with him very recently," Colletti said. "We've got other people we've got under consideration. We're in the process of compiling a list. Once we get a list, we'll go from there. We're taking it day by day."Teams are generally directed to interview at least one minority candidate for open managerial jobs, but the Dodgers were gr
Grady Little got a raw deal, sorry there is just no way you can spin it other wise. Little who was given public assurance by Los Angeles management that he would be back on the Dodgers bench next season as manager will not be back. In what Little termed "a mutual resignation" Little and the Dodgers parted ways Tuesday paving the way for the possibility of Joe Torre coming in as manager. Little did not have a great year as Dodgers manager this past season, the club went 82-80, and there was talk of dissension in the clubhouse. But if Los Angeles management wanted him out, they should have fired him, not make statements that he would be back. Last week rumors started to surface that new Yankees manager Joe Girardi was having discussions with the Dodgers for the managers job. Monday the Journal News out of New York reported that Torre would be getting the job. Where I grew up they call that back stabbing, Little deserved better.I had the pleasure covering Grady Little for two seasons when

The Dodgers had the second highest expected winning percentage in the NL West and had no chance at the playoffs. What happened?
Following up on my prior post about the Postseason Odds Report, I wanted to take a closer look at at where the Dodgers could have made a big difference. I think it comes down to James Loney and Matt Kemp.

The first case is Loney versus
Those three teams are being considered to play a couple spring training games next year in China. The Yankees were another team that has been thrown around, but they’d rather wait and get a regular season game or two there, not spring training.
Here’s something I didn’t know, I guess Willie Bloomquist is the M’s player rep. Here’s what Willie Ballgame had to say about a trip to China (where maybe the M’s can leave him there).
“I asked our players union, and we’re one of four or five teams they’re considering. Nothing’s been finalized,” Mariners player rep Willie Bloomquist said. “If it happens, great, a new experience. If not, nothing lost. The biggest issue is the travel there and back, with all the traveling we already do.”
For the most part it looks as though most of the teams involved wouldn’t mind going over there for a game or two even with the hard travel. I think as far as showing of the Major L
If you thought the real estate tumble bruised your home's resale value, it can't quite compare to the hurting Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt took on his Brookline estate. The developer and construction tycoon first listed the 18,000 square foot three-story, eight-bedroom, seven-bathroom Brookline mansion for $22 million. The house sits on nearly three acres surrounded by multimillion-dollar homes, but most $10 million or more below the most recent asking price of $15.75 million.
Dodgers fans wanting to boycott Barry Bonds' all-time home run record chase, will have to do so without all the fervor other stadiums have come to know during Bonds' last few scandalous seasons. Barry Bonds starts a road trip today as his San Francisco Giants travel to Dodger Stadium to take on their heated rivals from Los Angeles. Stoking the fire for this heated contest will be tortured superstar, Barry Bonds needing only 1 home run to tie Hank Aaron for the all-time record. However, stadium security will ensure that fans do not go overboard with their heckling and overall treatment of the Giants' slugger. The league might be distancing itself from Bonds, but officials are taking steps to reduce the negative environment if the 43 year-old slugger ties or breaks Aaron's record on the road. On the Giants' last trip, to Chicago and Milwaukee, league officials directed ballpark security to confiscate signs with references to steroid use or cheating. If Bonds breaks the record at Dodg

Nothing unites the Republican candidates for president or excites the conservative base more than their bellicose barking about war and confrontation. The GOP presidential debates often sound like a tough-man competition, with Rudolph Giuliani denouncing the “cut-and-run” Democrats, Mitt Romney demanding a double-size Guantánamo detention camp, and the rest of the pack struggling [...]
