I'll admit that I haven't been following the Wii Virtual console releases very much over the last few months. While I do understand the appeal that the service has for gamers who do not have a rather large backlog of classic carts or are unwilling (or unable) to emulate the titles, I haven't been incredibly satisfied with the bare bones ROM dumps that we are getting for our Wii points. This isn't to say it is a bad system by any means. After the release of the incredibly awesome Saints Row for the Xbox 360, many members of the Volition team that developed Saints Row, as well as other beautifully gorific titles as Red Faction and The Punisher, left to form their own developer studio, Blazing Lizard.
So what would the first game to be released by a developer house formed almost entirely of men who specialize in simulating death in glorious fashion? Dodgeball, naturally.

While my hopes were up that Blazing Lizard's first title would include wood chipper and pirahna tank deaths, it's hard to argue with this. The developer (made up of ex-Volition members) has revealed their downloadable title, Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball, which (thank God) is exactly what it sounds like.The game (the first in a series!) allows for up to eight players to choose from five unique teams (including pirates and ninjas, of course) and compete head to head in the sport that seperates the mice from the men -- dodgeball. Unlike traditional dodgeball, teams aren't restricted to one side of the court, and are allowed to freely roam six "arenas." Characters also have combat moves and special abilities, none of which are wood chipper or pirahna related. If I had to come up with a top 5 list of my favorite games of all time, Super Dodgeball more than likely wouldn't be on it. However, despite this minor detail in my mind, I can enthusiastically say that Super Dodgeball is one of the BEST GAMES EVER! Confused? That's understandable. But after seeing the news in this week's Famitsu that we would be revisiting this under appreciated classic, I couldn't help but feel a boy-like enthusiasm building up in me. I still remember hours wasted away in front of a NEO GEO or NES laughing as a thrown ball ends up launching one of your opponent's (preferably another human player - the computer never gave you the same satisfaction) character half way around the world. Ah, fond memories.With that said, Arc System Works is responsible for the development of the latest title for the Nintendo DS.
