It sometimes seems that every aspect of French life needs to be documented and, for the most part, by documentation that doesn’t exist outside France. When you move to France, you will continually be asked for your ID card which isn’t issued (yet) by the UK and quite often for your Carte de Séjour (residence permit) which, if you’re European, you’ve not been required to have for several years now. In the absence of those, your passport will obviously suffice and sometimes even a driving license. The Livre de Famille or family book is given to those who marry in France and contains, in effect, the birth certificates of the couple and any children that they have along with the marriage certificate. I raised a bug on missing documentation on some new functionality. Got pointed to a completely incorrect document. I think someone was hoping I wouldn’t notice. Responded that the document was for something else entirely. The predictable response to that was to be pointed to another pile of 5 documents i.e. bury me in documentation. We have some horrible software here for the running of multiple servers and man it confuses some people. When a system release is built its supposed to represent all of the valid servers with their attributes and system values. This should not really be touched by ourselves. Trouble is we have a pseudo techy who doesn’t really understand how it works and when I have mentioned to him that another application hasn’t worked due to an obvious system error he has gone in and hacked the server data. That did have the effect of allowing my application to work but when I checked his changes later we ended up in a situation where we had a very illogical server setup, at least according to the Oracle database tables. I did a bit of research and realised where he had gone wrong and that the reason he had amended the system incorrectly was because he didn’t know how it was supposed to work. And the reason for that was that we don’t have any documentation. So I raised

One of the Wordpress podcasts was recorded by a kid of about 14 and was predictably full of ‘awesomes’. He was full of it for all sorts of plug-ins and bits of javascript and even he admitted some of them weren’t easy to get going. I can just imagine all sorts of fumbling around necessary to get these things working and a net result of dissapointment. What he thought was great was not quite what I would think of as great. Anyway he was enthusiastic and he’s done well to record t
