Sobering Documentary ‘At the Death House Door’ to Premiere in Chicago From ‘Hoop Dreams’ Filmmakers
CHICAGO – The Texas “killer burger” is literally sold right across the street from a state-mandated death house that brings convicted felons to their legal demise. While the death penalty is believed by many to serve a sort of justice to the guilty the majority of the time, what happens when the wrongly accused fall prey, too? Moreover, is it ultimately right to even treat the guilty with such eye-for-an-eye repercussion? Hunter S. Thompson documentary closes festival
Hunter S. Thompson luxuriated in being the center of attention. Imagine how the late journalist would have strutted, knowing that a documentary all about him was closing the San Francisco International Film Festival. He'd be first in line for "Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson," wearing his trademark fisherman's hat and tinted aviator glasses, and brandishing a cigarette holder with ashes piling up - never mind the ban on smoking. The only thing that would have made him happier is if "Gonzo" were opening the festival Thursday. It somehow seems appropriate to end a 15-day marathon of 105 movies and special programs with a tribute to this occasional San Franciscan and master of gonzo journalism. He came up with "gonzo" to describe his freestyle, drugs- and booze-

Based on what I saw on MASN Sunday, he looked like what many saw in the World Baseball Classic and his final start 2006 against New York. I think his new found professionalism and seriousness (at least what I have seen so far), could lead to a breakout year. Of course, he needs to control his pitches and just keep the basic fundamentals in place. In terms of the pitching, will the young Birds will take the leap forward, considering the expectation of inexperience in the rotation. And some of them are just plain misleading – they were hardly the main characters in the cartoon that was referenced.Such is the level of apathy in this release, that even the DVD's title page mis-spells its own name as "Time Marxes On."What saves this production though is the sheer quality of these clips. Most of them are from TV appearances much later in the Marx Brothers' lives, and as such offer fascinating glimpses into the professional legacies they created for themselves. Review: Helvetica (Documentary)
Helvetica is a documentary about a typeface with the same name. That typeface is also the one in which this post’s green headline is written. And to simplify the coming discussion, I want to make clear that Helvetica is a documentary and Helvetica is a typeface. The essential goal of Gary Hustwit’s Helvetica is to examine the history of and opinions regarding Helvetica. For those, like myself, relatively ignorant of type design and history, this is quite interesting and unexpected. Where Helvetica succeeds with a lay audience is that it introduces a previously unknown world that already has a number of strong opinions and arguments. And though chances are good that typophiles will love Helvetica for the same novelty that lay audience find in it, I can’t really speak for them. From the outset, Helvetica presents no argument against the idea that Helvetica is the most important typeface of the last 50 years. And throughout, we’re constantly reminded of Helvetica&

The man had received nothing," Siti Fadillah Supari was quoted saying by Detikcom news website after she met the 32-year-old Dede in a hospital in West Java.Indonesian medical teams would cooperate with Anthony Gaspari, a dermatologist from the US University of Maryland -- who examined Dede as part of the documentary -- to treat Dede, she said."We will cooperate with Dr Anthony from Maryland who had taken his blood sample and specimen... New Documentary Resurrects Voice of the Clash
The gospel of punk rock is not complete without the voice of the Clash—who articulated their punk doctrine from the mid-70s to mid-80s—and the Clash was not complete without the voice of vocalist and guitarist Joe Strummer, whose life and tenets were recognized in a recently released documentary. Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten, directed by Julien Temple, follows the life of Strummer. The film uses a chronological arc with a multitude of “rebel storytellers” to tell the tale of Strummer, The Chicago Sun-Times reports. Gathered from archival radio conversations and interviews, Strummer's raspy voice is the backbone of the film. The documentary touches on many facets of Strummer’s life, including his political commitment, his struggle to be recognized individually after the breakup of the Clash in 1985, and his relentless desire to destroy musical barriers.

Michigan Filmmaker David Meiklejohn Using Internet as Director For Documentary
We recently learned about filmmakers David Meiklejohn and Davy Rothbart and their project “My Heart is an Idiot”. It’s a documentary in progress that’s partially using the Internet as its director.Meiklejohn, who’s actually directing, is publishing video chunks weekly at the film’s Web site for feedback, criticism and the submission of “great ideas we can steal and make millions from,” he jests. The film’s Web site is here. The film’s MySpace is here. I have embedded the first video chunk below.“My Heart is an Idiot” is about love through the lens of a 32-year-old man who doesn’t know what he wants in a relationship. The filmmakers hope the experience will help viewers learn to “love better”.The film is currently in post-production, which means Meiklejohn “spends more time in front of a computer than out in sunlight with normal people”.He’s soliciting the online community because he says “working for 12 hours a day in a basement by myself gets …

      Marlon Brando Documentary
A new documentary about Marlon Brando shows he still captivated fans with his compelling, but raw emotion during his truly stunning film career that saw him evolve from sex symbol to political activist to obese recluse. The documentary examines Brando"s amazing, amazing career in films and his career - threatening political activism in favor of civil rights and Native American's, which Black Panther Bobby Seale and Lakota activist Russell Means called unprecedented among White American Celebrities. When Brando refused his best actor Oscar for "The Godfather" and sent Sacheen Little feather to the stage in his place during the awards ceremony, Means said, "That was the finest moment for us in the 20th Century."

Swedish documentary follows "regular" Europeans who turn to jihad
Why do young men, who have grown up in the safe bosom of Scandinavia, want to sacrifice their lives for Allah? That is the question posed by a Swedish documentary that provides a glimpse into the world of young European Muslims who dedicate themselves to jihad, or holy war.Aching Heart is the story of two young Swedes with immigrant backgrounds - one from Ostermalm, one of Stockholm's poshest neighborhoods, and one from Kvanum, a tiny town in central Sweden - who left their homes in the 1990s to seek martyrdom in the wars of Chechnya and Bosnia and Herzegovina. But most of the focus of the film is on Göteborg, Sweden's second-biggest city. This is where Mirsad Bektasevic grew up. The 20-year-old Swede with Bosnian roots was given an eight-year sentence in Sarajevo this summer for planning a suicide attack there in 2005.The opening scene of Aching Heart is a video found with Bektasevic when he was arrested: Two balaclava-clad men show off a stash of weapons, including hand grenades an
