News Flash: Euphrony updates blogroll, stock market dives 338 points
Maybe it means the end of the world, but it needed to be done. I've updated my blogroll (that thing on the right hand sidebar where your blog is linked to from my blog). I did a little arranging while I was at it. There are a couple of blogs that I don't want to take off my list, but since they collectively blog about once a month I felt they should be separated into a "slow lane" of the inform

Eden Rocks Shore Dives in Grand Cayman
When we took a cruise of the Western Caribbean, it included Grand Cayman as a port. We were able to scuba dive one of the shore dives there. There are actually two shore dives off the downtown area of Georgetown which were recommended to us. For cruiseship passengers, it is fairly easy to locate. As soon as the tender boats arrive at the pier, we walked to the right and less than 5 minutes, we a

U.S dives as inflation less than expected. Euro threatens key 1.60 level.
CURRENCY TRADING SUMMARYU.S. Dollar Trading (USD) paired its gains made on Tuesday as CPI rose less than expected to 0.3%, causing the dollar to drop against the majors. This coupled with upward inflationary pressures in the Euro Zone and an increased sell off against commodity currencies hurt the dollar, seeing it fall to a record low against the Euro. The USD sell off came despite a rise in U.S yields and U.S stocks gaining over 2%. CPI for the month of March came in slightly below forecast at 0.3% m/m, compared to 0% for February. Industrial Output grew from -0.7% in February, to 0.3% in March, surpassing predictions of a -0.1% contraction. Housing Starts for March were slightly below forecasts of 1.02 million, coming in at 947k. Similarly, Building Permits shrunk from 984k in February

Zany's take on the playoffs so far: Avery, penalties, dives and Thornton
I find it very difficult to post anything during these playoffs lately. That is, until yesterday's games and events. Some days I can hate Sean Avery. But I really couldn't help but laugh at what he was doing to screen Martin Brodeur during Sunday's game. That was awesome comedic stuff. Brodeur was bewildered. "I've played for 15 years in this league. I've been watching games for 33 years. I had never seen that in my life," Brodeur said. "I don't think that kind of behavior should be done in front of the net, but there is no rule for it." Well, the NHL changed that in a New York minute. Today the NHL quickly added a new rule and stated that "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himse

In November 2003, Gallup found that 73 percent of Americans held favorable views about Oprah. Seventy-four percent of Americans reported favorable impressions of Oprah in a January 2007 Gallup/USA Today poll. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, Oprah announced on CNN’s “Larry King Live” on May 1, 2007, that she would officially endorse her longtime friend Barack Obama for the presidency — the first time she had ever thrown her support behind a political candidate. “I think that my value to him, my support of him, is probably worth more than an

3 tank boat dives in Kona Hawaii
The standard morning dive outing in Kona tends to be a two tank outing, diving one tank at each of two locations. Some operators do offer a three tank day on occasion. I'm not aware of any at this point that offer a regularly scheduled 3 tank trip, but several will do it when there are enough customers to make a go of it.We did a three tanker yesterday. Our first dive was up north above the airport at a spot a handful of us go to on occasional basis. It's a great live boat dive with both deep and shallow reefs so we can do a deeper multilevel dive and still do a long dive. Highlights of that dive were a manta ray right off the bat, and the reef structure of the dive... lots of grand topography. Our second dive was at Pipe Dream, which is right off the westernmost point of the island on

When Cathy came up she was thrilled to see a fish she hadn't seen ever before in the time she's worked the dive boats in Kona (since '76, 32 years and seeing something new is still a thrill). Before she climbed back on board she asked if I happened to have my camera on board and if she could borrow it to take some photos.... yup. While she was down one of the snorkelers said they'd seen it under the boat and thought it was pretty cool, but didn't know it was anything out of the ordinary...Well here it is....After looking it up in Hoover, it turns out this is a rarely seen color morph of the Spotted Puffer (Arothron meleagris). Today's dives were a blast....
We went diving today and had a great time. The gentleman who was stuffed up yesterday was much better today and joined us. We dove at Hoover's, which is just off the north end of the Kona airport and at Kaloko Arches/ Kaloko Canyons or whatever you choose to call it.I had something interesting happen with the camera housing - started clouding up and got a spot or two of moisture in it so it went back to the boat - turned out to be a hair on the o-ring. Hair on the o-rings of housings has killed many a camera over the years, I lucked out. I'm going to relube and reseat the o-ring and take it diving to a reasonable depth before taking the camera out on the boat againBob led the first dive, we swapped captain's duties after the first dive so I'd have a chance to dive. Both of these sites are great and are among my faovorites over here. Highlights of the dives were nudibranchs, psychedelic wrasses, several flame angels, flame wrasses (can't wait to get a shot of those), a male wh

      Cliff Dives
Monday, Jack and Daniel wanted to go to Cliff Dives, as all the adults were going to be busy with the lawyer who arrived at the ranch to talk to Aunt Jane. So we when Tony and I woke up, we didn't waste any time in getting ready to go; it's a long way down and back and we wanted some time to spend down there. Aunt Jane, John, Joe (the lawyer), Wayne (the ranch manager), and Uncle Larry took the Suburban and drove out with us, before starting a day of business. Jack, Daniel, Tony, and I took the newest truck. The drive to Cliff Dives was an adventure in itself. The roads out on the ranch aren't exactly something one would take a fancy car on, but you don't really expect to fall in to the bumper when you cross a stream. But that's exactly what happened. Since we weren't expecting it, we didn't take a picture of the Suburban as it went through (when it was unexpected), but we did manage to take a few of the truck going back through. Then there was the really steep, fairly rou

      Cliff Dives
Tuesday I took some of the day off and went with the Family(except Aunt Jane, who stayed at home), the guests (except , and James (the cook) to the Cliff Dives. I forget where they are exactly, but I think they are on the southern border of the ranch, down in a canyon. At any rate, we drove for I don't remember how long. We took several containers of water and our lunches. We tried to pack lightly, but we needed all the water we could carry.I don't remember what time we started (or even if it was morning or afternoon). I'm tempted to say we started in the morning, but my journal suggests I worked part of the day. At any rate, it took us a couple of hours to get to the bottom of the canyon. At the rim and for most of the way down, we scrambled over huge rocks. At the bottom, we met with a challenge larger than we were expecting: brush. Sure, it sounds like nothing, right? It was so thick and stiff, we couldn't force our bodies through it, but had to hack our way through wi

Low cost airline Flyme dives into bankrupty
Swedish airline Flyme, based in Gothenburg is to file for bankrupty. I’m not sure where that leaves passengers, maybe taking the boat home or away? The Danish low cost carrier Sterling has stepped and offered to accommodate passengers free on domestic routes and to offer a discount voucher to Flyme passengers on any international parallel routes. I imagine it must be terrible to arrive at the aiport to return home and find that your airline is no longer flying. You could also lose money if you can’t get to your destination and you have prepaid for car hire or accommodation. Please let me know if you have been affected by this and what, if any, alternatives are on offer.

Hawaii reef dives, manta diving, frogfish, whaleshark... We've done it all the last couple of days...
A lot of scuba diving has happend off the Wanna Dive boat the last couple of days. We've managed to see most of the "rare" stuff... Or should I say my crew has anyway. I've been playing Captain for the most part.Yesterday we had a newly certified couple join a group of four that's been diving with us. Newly certified divers can be fun to dive with... occasionally you get those cases of "beginner's luck", yesterday was no exception... part way through the dive Bob looked up and a WHALESHARK was swimming over their heads. The first diver up was one of the newly certified divers and he was extremly excited, going on about seeing a shark that was bigger than the boat.... for those of you who aren't familiar with whalesharks, they are harmless plankton feeders and can grow to 40-60 feet long - they are HUGE. Now Bob has well over 4000 logged dives and this was the first whaleshark he had seen on scuba ever... they got it on thier first try. It's all downhill for them from here
