Why do humans cooperate in things as diverse as environment conservation or the creation of fairer societies, even when they don’t receive anything in exchange or, worst, they might even be
Two studies based on data from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have revealed that the Red Planet once hosted vast lakes, flowing rivers and a variety of other wet environments that had the potential to support life. One study, published in the July 17 issue of Nature, shows that vast regions of the ancient highlands of Mars, which cover about half the planet, contain clay minerals, which can fo
If there's one thing I enjoyed about Chicago, it was the cultural-diversity which manifested itself in the wide array of food choices. And yesterday was the day I sampled food from Chicago's ethnically-diverse neighborhoods.First stop for the day was Devon Avenue, a former Jewish community which now plays host to Chicago's Indian & Pakistani communities. Available there are various cuisines fr

Cape Town is without a doubt the most popular destination within the region, set against the fabulous backdrop of Table Mountain. Being the largest state in the United States, Alaska is also one of the most diverse states in the country. The miles and miles of Alaskan coastline draws in tourists from around the world and has become the one of the most popular vacation destinations because of its natural unspoiled beauty. Perhaps the reason for Alaska's popularity is because of the diverse attractions that Alaska offers. Icebergs, glaciers, and ice fields are among the many natural wonders that can be found in Alaska. Aquatic life is also a major attraction in Alaska, watching killer whales in their natural habitat, or seal and dolphins playing gleefully in the cold Atlantic waters. If cruising the coast of Alaska is a lifelong dream, cruising the coastline will be a dream come true.Cruise ships are not the only way t
Montana is too large and diverse for definition or characterization in general terms. Children in its schools are taught that the name Montana means "mountains," but many of them see only prairies rolling to the horizon. They are told that Montana is still a great ranching State, where cattle graze and cowboys ride, but some of them, as in Butte, see only ore dumps, great dark sheds, and barren buttes. To the dry-land farmer in the eastern part of the State, Montana is a vast agricultural plain checkered with brownish fallow land and fields of green wheat that ripen to a dusty gray-gold in August; or it is a drab waste seen through a haze of wind-blown soil. For him the mountains of the western part exist chiefly as the goal for some long-deferred vacation. To the resident of the mountain
Critics have long argued against the effects of video gaming. There is the typical claim that the prolonged use of video games reinforces violent behaviours among children. And, there’s the usual assertion that video gaming discourages exercise and physical activity. With the advent of interactive video games some of these claims lose their strength. It seems that more and more benefits are being discovered through the use of the popular video game console, the Nintendo Wii. Some of these benefits include engaging seniors in social and/or physical activity, connecting stroke and spinal cord injury patients in a new form of rehab, also known as Wiihab, as well as assisting surgeons to sharpen their skills. To add to that list, recently, the Nintendo Wii has been used for psychological e

Managing teams can be difficult but when we manage teams with diverse ethnic, cultural and religious practices it can get much more difficult. When people have these varying vantage points it may be hard for teams to come together and have an appropriate level of consensus on the actions needed to be taken. The more different the team members are the more difficult the team management but the more meaningful the results. Various religions and ethnic differences can create problems for teams. When teams begin to split on these religions and ethnic differences it is necessary for the team leader to intervene quickly and bring the team back together (Stevens, 2007). The longer the team leader waits the more likely the team will continue to split. One approach to managing diverse teams is to r

Recruiting, managing and retaining a diverse workplace is a key issue facing today’s executives and HR professionals. The market drivers are clear: the global economy and advancements in technology have spurred increased interaction among people from diverse ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds, and have caused major demographic shifts in the ethnic make-up of the U.S. population. Despite all of this, HR professionals remain challenged with finding, recruiting and retaining diverse employees.Key FeaturesWhile almost all organizations recognize the importance and benefits of workplace diversity, not as many have fully committed the resources necessary for the policies and programs to support it.• Two-thirds of organizations have a documented diversity policy (a written document that
Conservative attitudes in newer EU member states threaten to roll back a generation of gains in gay marriage, adoption, even equal access to work. The European Union’s recent growth spurt to 27 member states has meant an increase in tensions, clearly visible this year from Amsterdam to Nicosia to Warsaw over the issue of gay rights. Across the EU, the disparities in national policy and attitude toward homosexuality have never been more pronounced. Some member states – notably the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and Spain – favor far-reaching rights for gay people, including same-sex marriage. Others, including former Eastern bloc nations Poland and Romania, openly and unapologetically discriminate against gays, barring them from jobs and denying them other rights afforded to heterosexuals. “It’s not in the interest of any society to increase the number of homosexuals—that’s obvious,” Poland’s conservative Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski told reporters last spring, in

As I was cruising on the 405 this weekend fighting off the 93 degree humid weather, something was stickier than the air and that was the new message being spouted off over the airwaves pertaining to the housing market. Journal of Social Psychology, The, by Cowan, GloriaRACIAL DIVERSITY is a major issue among colleges and universities. A university may have a diverse student body in terms of the presence of a large number of students of varying ethnicities, races, and cultures. However, the question remains whether the diversity in numbers is reflected in a diversity in interactions.Do students in campuses that are heterogeneous in ethnicity, race, or culture self-segregate, or do they engage in frequent interactions with members of the other groups? It is important to determine whether students engage in interracial interactions, not only in the ...Read full story

Spanish wine and food is very diverse in its nature. The myriad variations in Spanish cuisine are mostly a result of geographic, climatic, and cultural differences that have influenced its development. However, it can be said that Spanish cuisine is most heavily influenced by the fact that it is quite close to the sea and this gives its food a Mediterranean spirit. Spain has also had a long history of exposure to diverse cultures and other influences, all of which have combined to create a unique collection of recipes that find favor with countless culinary enthusiasts all over the world.
When you consider the rich history of Spanish cuisine, it is impossible to mistake the presence of Moorish and Jewish influences. The Moors had a strong influence on Spain for several centuries and this is clearly reflected in the food. Pork has also been a part of Spanish cuisine for many centuries and this is obviously a part of the Christian identity that characterizes Spanish cultu
I’m watching our Canadian exchange rate in complete disbelief as the dollar advanced to 95.33 US cents on Friday. While my US positions (30% weighting) are getting whipped, I’m contemplating if I should snatch up some global dividend-paying US blue chips. The higher Canadian dollar buys you more US shares. At the same time, businesses with significant international revenues should benefit from the cheaper US dollar.

This Op-Ed from Khin Mai Aung, a staff attorney with the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, and co-counsel to 16 amici groups in the Louisville and Seattle cases - in the San Francisco Chroncle.~When the U.S. Supreme Court's decisions on Seattle's and Louisville's school integration cases came down, our offices received a flurry of calls inquiring how the rulings impact Asian Pacific Americans. Without a doubt, the court should have found these integration plans to be constitutional and legal efforts to diversify classrooms. In that regard, these decisions were dead wrong. However, it should be noted that the court did not prohibit all consideration of race in school assignment plans. Justice Anthony Kennedy clearly states that "A compelling interest exists in avoiding racial isolation, an interest that a school district, in its discretion and expertise, may choose to pursue... . Race may be one component of [student] diversity, but other demographic factors ... should
I must admit, I have been remiss in introducing y'all to someof the new wait staff additions that we have had at the restaurant recently. They are all night shift girls, as that shift has a MUCH higher turnover rate than day shift. I ampretty much convinced that the main reason for that is the late closing hour that we have there; not a whole lot of folks are too keen on being out and about at 2 am. Night shift is also a much slower, more relaxed pace than day shift; hence, the better waitresses tend to work during the more hectic day, while at night we can usually get by with staff who are not quite as efficient. Those who realize that waiting tables is NOT for them then move along. So the 3 newer staff members I need to bring y'all up to date with are Patricia, Terri, and Susan. Patricia is Hispanic, from Puerto Rico, but speaks excellent English. She is a good waitress and a very hard worker; the only drawback is that she is habitually late to work, to
Did a search for shopautodotca seocontest, now I am still in #3, not bad. But WOW! When I search shopautodotca seocontest I get over 45,000 results. Now maybe I missed the gradual increase of results... but was it not just a week or two ago that the results were about 20,000 results less. I guess my method of building links one link at a time will not compete with the tens of thousands of links that I am sure just one or two of the sites have built up in the last few weeks. So I have my method of SEO/SEM fairly transparent. Not only is it pretty easy to figure out how I plan on doing well in the shopautodotca seocontest, but I have also been spelling in out on my shopautodotca seocontest blog. Why have I been doing this? Well nothing I am doing is new or innovative I guess in the seocontest. With the news that Tom Vilsack has dropped out of the 2008 presidential race, something has become patently clear. As Daniel pointed out, Bill Richardson remains the only governor in the Democratic field. The Democrats' "Big Three"—Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards—are either currently serving in the U.S. senate, or used to. Joe Biden and Chris Dodd are, of course, also U.S. senators, and Dennis Kucinich is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, still a member of congress (though I think he has indicated that he now devotes much of his energy ridiculing marionettes and puppeteers). Wesley Clark would be the only other potential '08 candidate in the Democratic field to bring unique vocational experience to the table, and frankly, I'm not sure that he will be running. And if he does, his chances are slim. The 2004 Democratic field included four U.S. senators (Kerry, Edwards, Lieberman, and Graham), two U.S. representatives (Gephardt and Kucinich), one g
