      Failing Hard Disks Info!
Typically, hard disk drives are pretty silent hardware components. I mean, of course you can hear them, but the normal sounds they make are not too powerful and they appear under heavy workloads. Or so it is supposed to be, as there are some older drives that make a lot of noise when running at full capacity.Occasionally, users may hear knocking or clicking sounds coming out from the hard disk dri

      Explaining RAID Disks
I hate acronyms.Of course they're impossible to avoid if you work in IT, but that doesn't mean I have to like them.RAID is one of those acronyms that really wrecks my head. Not RAID itself which means simply Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, but the different types of RAID array that can exist.RAID, in case you didn't know, is a way of improving redundancy and performance in servers by using multiple disks. Of course you don't have to use multiple disks, but if you don't you will run the risk of losing data.A few months ago someone posted a very nice simple graphic that explained the differences between the various types of RAID arrays.Taken from: of our technical staff sent me a link earlier today to a bash.org quote which sums up the potential issues with single disk servers very ni

Data Breach And Espionage Fears Overblown: Petrobras Recovers Stolen Disks and Laptops Lacking Encryption
A couple of weeks back I picked up on an article that had the Brazilian government mobilizing its intelligence and police forces to recover stolen laptops and hard drives.  The devices stored data on recently discovered oil and gas fields found off the coast of Brazil.  The loss of data led to much speculation on who could have done it and why, including whether it was a case of industrial espionage.  I pointed out at the time that I couldn’t see how spies would make use of any stolen data: oil fields hundreds of feet beneath the sea surface are not something you can steal.  (On further thought, perhaps the data will be useful if the rights to pump parts of the field are auctioned off or something.  I mean, who wants the risk of pumping the wrong part of the fie

Mounting Floppy Disks and Removable Media
In order to read floppy disks and other removable media, you need to mount the device. Linux usually adds the proper settings to /etc/fstab and default mount points to the /mnt directory. The defaul mount points are straightforward; for example, floppy are mounted on /mnt/floppy, CD's are mounted on /mnt/cdrom. You can do this using the following command:#mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppythe -t switch specifies the type of filesystem(vfat). The device file /dev/fd0 represents the first floppy drive; /mnt/floppy is the directory through which you can access the files after mounting. If you take a look at your /etc/fstab entry and you will see something like the ff:/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto, owner, kudzu 0 0This /etc/fstab line sets the default configuration for he first floppy drive (/dev/fd0). The ormat is auto which means that the mount command searches the filesystems and so all you need to mount the floppy is he following c

Seagate offering 5% refund on hard disks
Seagate Technology, the world's largest hard-drive maker, is offering customers a five percent refund on drives bought during the last six years following a lawsuit over the definition of a "gigabyte". As an alternative, customers can choose to receive free backup software.Four people sued the company, saying they expected its drives to offer greater capacity than that actually provided. Seagate manufactures its drives based on powers of ten, with 1KB equalling 1,000 bytes. The claimants argued that 1KB of storage should compromise 1,024 bytes. On a 1GB drive, this would make the difference between one billion bytes of storage, and 1,073,741,824 bytes. Other manufacturers, such as Samsung and Hitachi, also measure hard-drive capacity with 1KB equalling 1,000 bytes, whereas all operating systems are based on 1KB equalling 1,024 bytes.Because the lawsuit is a "class action", the settlement is available to all Seagate customers.Seagate denies any fault, but it has offered to pay the refun

Hoya Q2 profit down on memory disks, LCD equipment
TOKYO, Oct 29 - Hoya Corp posted a 4.5 percent fall in quarterly operating profit, hit by sluggish sales of liquid crystal display-making equipment and a delay in the production of advanced glass disks used in hard disk drives. Hoya, which acquired digital camera and medical equipment maker Pentax Corp earlier this year, benefited from brisk sales of optical lenses for digital cameras and higher sales of glass used in the production of semiconductors. But a delay in the production of hard disks with a so-called "perpendicular recording method" weighed on its quarterly earnings, while price competition hurt sales of glass used to make LCDs.Operating profit at Hoya, which competes with Konica Minolta Holdings Inc in the hard disk substrate business, came to 26.85 billion yen in July-September, compared with a 28.13 billion yen profit a year earlier. The result is roughly in line with Hoya's forecast for 26.36 billion yen. Merrill Lynch had estimated 26.5 billion yen.Net profit slid 8.2 pe

Tips on Cooling your Hard Disks
Not all hard disks require cooling. This includes drives with a spindle rotation speed of 5,400 rpm. Disk drives intended for the home or office rarely require cooling.Nevertheless, there are many high-performance disk drives available. These drives include models with a rotation speed ranging from 7,200 rpm to 15,000 rpm. They often include a large amount of cache memory and high-performance chips in the built-in controller. The operation of these electronic components, combined with the operation of mechanical elements, causes intensive heat emission. As a result, high-performance hard disks frequently require appropriate cooling, especially if they are installed in compact computer cases. The replacement life of the hard disk depends on its operating temperature. When the drive temperature rises above the limit specified by the hardware manufacturer, it is advisable to use specialized cooling devices. For example, the temperature limit for the IBM hard disks is 55°C (131°F).Some

Ferrotoroidicity, key to faster hard disks?
Ferrotoroidicity, key to faster hard disks? I bet that not many of you have heard about ferrotoroidicity. In fact, Google returns only 37 results about this concept as I’m typing this. In a nutshell, three forms of ferroic material are widely known: ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity. But European scientists have discovered a fourth form, which they called ferrotoroidicity. This phenomenon could lead to a new way to ’store data on atomic roundabouts.’ As the lead researcher said, ‘One could compare ferrotoroidic domains with roundabouts in, say, the UK and Germany where cars go around in clockwise or counter-clockwise direction.’ Even if this discovery is very interesting, it looks like many years will pass before this ferrotoroidic effect can be used to manufacture faster and more reliable hard disks. AnyDVD, copies HD and Blu-Ray disks, get it while you can
I heard about AnyDVD the other day so downloaded the trial version to see how well it worked. Its supposed to be able to copy both HD and Blu Ray disks. It’s a DVD ripper in that it’ll extract a DVD for you to use another application to write it back to another DVD. The usual justification for this is it will enable you to make a backup of a DVD you already own. Yeah right. Backing up your hard drive is one of the most tedious but necessary things to do on a PC, why anybody in their right mind would want to make a backup of their own DVD beats the hell out of me (unless of course they are backing up copies of their children’s DVD’s who can be a little clumsy with them). Let’s face it you use this kind of software to do something else entirely. AnyDVD removes region codes and you can also get rid of the adverts and copyright infringement warnings and jump straight to the film. Sounds like a better version of DVDShrink. To record the ripped files bac

Convert To Basic And Dynamic Disks In Windows Xp
Windows XP Professional supports two types of disk storage: basic and dynamic. Basic disk storage uses partition-oriented disks. A basic disk contains basic volumes (primary partitions, extended partitions, and logical drives). Dynamic disk storage uses volume-oriented disks, and includes features that basic disks do not, such as the ability to create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes). General Notes Before you change a basic disk to a dynamic disk, note these items: You must have at least 1 megabyte (MB) of free space on any master boot record (MBR) disk that you want to convert. This space is automatically reserved when the partition or volume is created in Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional. However, it may not be available on partitions or volumes that are created in other operating systems. When you convert to a dynamic disk, the existing partitions or logical drives on the basic disk are converted to simple volumes on the dynamic disk. A

Although Blu-ray was launched a month earlier, the rival format HD DVD has outsold it by 4 to 1 according to the official charts company. Speculation suggests that this is due to the support for HD DVD on the games console Xbox 360 with its optical drive. Blu-ray which was launched in October managed to sell a total 1,834 discs by the end of 2006 while HD DVD launched in November managed to sell a whopping 8,200 discs. But, will you pay higher just for the higher packing density and increased reliability it offers?SSDA Solid state disk (SSD) is a device that uses memory chips, to store data, instead of the platters found in conventional hard disks. They cant be called a "disk", but called so since they are compatible to conventional disks in any sense. Both SDRAM based and Flash based versions are available. The Flash comes in two shapes - NOR based or NAND based, depending on the logic gates used. These can be rewritten 1 to 5-6 million times, before it starts to give errors due to the tunneling occuring during the read/write cycles. NOR based ones allow random access , while NAND offers semi-sequential access.Since NAND based ones can be packed densly, it has be
