Saturday morning here had been unusually cold. We, my siblings and I didn't want to get out of bed. My little sister huddled under the covers and stayed there most of the day. It rained on and off. I told the hubby it is cold and he couldn't imagine, the tropical Philippines to be cold, like shivering cold, but it was, it had been a cold day. Little did we know, the coldness and bleakness of that

As part of my job, I give interview advice to candidates applying for travel jobs. When I ask them how it went afterwards, most people don’t come out remembering what went right. They remember the bad things. The joke that fell flat, the awkward silence halfway through, the question that left them scrabbling for an inadequate answer. And while some people just seem to have the knack for doing we

Modern Marvels: Engineering Disasters makes me never want to get on a plane, get on a boat, get on an oil rig, or get in a car. It also makes me want to avoid living near levees and dams, living near sewers, or living near anything having to do with natural gas (the natural gas generated by an awesome Mexican dinner is, of course, exempt).

China’s earthquake is one of the deadliest on record since 1976 when 240,000 people died. Many villages have been completely wiped out, and more than 7,000 schools collapsed and killed thousands of children.
In a country with a one child policy, many parents are left childless and are mourning their loss. Some children are alive but had to be amputated to be saved from the rubble, and many
This month, two terrible tragedies in the form of two major natural disasters have taken place, leading to vast humanitarian crisis.

In the wake of natural disasters, travel companies often play the God card — technically, the Act of God clause, a legal term for, “circumstances beyond our control” — which basically says your airline, cruise line or hotel owes you nothing. After all, the tragedy wasn’t their fault.

The military junta is being blamed for poorly managing the response effort after Cyclone Nargis. Junta refers to Burma's government by a board of military leaders. Junta is a word that is not exclusive to Burma and has been applied to other governments in other countries. Laura Bush condemned the junta’s response after Cyclone Nargis had passed as being “inept.” Her husband, President George W. Bush’s response was clumsy and showed no skill or leadership after Hurricane Katrina therefore President George W. Bush’s response could be called inept too.
Cyclone Nargis made landfall on Burma or Myanmar on 2 May 2008 and proved to be deadly for the Irrawaddy delta region of Burma (Myanmar) due to a sea surge that "swept inland.” According to the Associated Press, "of the 22,000 dead so far, as many as 21,793 were from the Irrawaddy delta [and] another 40,695 of the 41,000 missing also came from the region." The United Nations World Food Program has begun to deliver aid in to Burma. Certainly, the death toll will rise after the flooding because of disease and sanitation issues. Some reputable agencies that are seeking donations and assisting Burma include Direct Relief International and the U.S. Campaign for Burma. Charity Navigator has a list of U.S. based charities participating in the relief effort. The satellite images show befor

Sometimes I find Stuart Woods thought provoking. Others times I find his books merely entertaining. I guess realistically sometimes it is good to find a book that provides you with entertainment and doesn't really make you think. I spend a lot of time thinking so auto pilot isn't all bad. Delano, Georgia gets mentioned once again by a character. That small, quaint Georgia town would have to be several hundred thousand to encompass every character who originated there. Stone Barrington is always amusing, amazingly attractive to every member of the opposite sex and always lands on his feet. He is never faint of heart when it comes to challenges. Global warming is thought to be partially to blame for causing sea levels to rise and making coastal cities like, Jakarta, Indonesia, vulnerable to flooding and monsoon storms. Experiments show as water temperature rises a few degrees from room temperature, the space the water takes up expands. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that from 1993-2003, the global sea level rose about 3mm/year. It is estimated that half that amount is due to global warming. An oceanographer with the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration said that 1/2 inch of vertical sea level rise translates to about 3 feet of land lost on a sandy open coast, because of erosion and more pronounced tides in deltas and estuaries. Some organizations believe that the floods that only happen every 100 ye

We keep hearing stories of how, shall we say, 'interesting' it is owning a goat. The bravest, and stupidest act I've ever seen involved goats. A near disaster, indeed.
During the summers while I was in high school I worked on a construction crew. We were building a goat barn for a young couple who had a small herd of milk goats. Things were not progressing well, to say the least. The building site was difficult for vehicles to access, being across a small creek and soggy pasture. The ground at the site itself, however, was anything but soft, and we had to pick-ax our way into the earth for the foundation.
The goats were a constant problem, they were quite curious, and good at getting in the way. Ever have a goat climb on top of the pile of dirt in your wheelbarrow? It's not g

A study has shown that the diabetes epidemic in the U.S. costs $174 billion a year. That's about as much as the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and the global war on terrorism combined, and is more than the $150 billion in damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.
There are now 1 million new cases of diabetes a year as more Americans become overweight or obese. The cost of diabetes has increased by 32 percent since 2002.
Diabetes killed more than 284,000 Americans in 2007.

Good Day , after Thanksgiving. Here is a quick way to discover if your horse is at risk of lameness due to having pigeon toes. There is a missconception as to exactly what pigeon toes actually are. Your horse can have feet that point straight ahead which is considered textbook perfect conformation yet still be pigeon toed. Here's how to find out the truth. 1. Stand directly in front of your horse. 2. Look at your horses knees - take careful consideration of where the knees point. Do they point straight ahead or do they point out to the side. There's a 98% chance the knees point outward. 3. slide your glance down the leg to the feet, pay close attention to where the feet are pointing - not look back up to the knees , then back down to the feet, do this several times until you find out the relationship between where the knee points to where the feet point. 4. The chance is 98% or greater your horses feet point inward while the knees point outward. You have established undeniably the ho
Some years ago, when I was a teenager, I was into CB radios -- just like the rest of the country. My license was KAFU0074, and my 'handle' was "Magic Fingers". Don't ask. Anyway, I wanted to raise an antenna. I lived on the hill above Whitworth College, in north Spokane. There was a cliff face behind me, but I had an unobstructed view to the north, east, and south.
There was an old unused flagpole in the yard -- it was perfect for my plans. The flagpole was a large pipe, and threaded into a connector near the bottom. I soaked the threads in penetrating oil for a few days, then got some friends over to help. Those of you who know me know that I'm a big guy -- someone who could easily lift and move a 20' flagpole by himself. As a matter of fact I have done just that, recently. However, back then I was, literally, half the man I am now.
I was just as tall, but so skinny... My friends were both shorter than me, and also not body builders by any means. Somehow we manage
When I first heard about the Red Cross’ dismissal of its president Mark Everson, I thought, ‘Here we go again.’ Five presidents in six years isn’t a good track record for any organization and doesn’t inspire confidence, internally or externally.
Upon further reflection, however, I’ve come to more fully appreciate the courage and leadership of the Red Cross–an organization that’s been heavily criticized over the past few years (think 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina).Yet despite this litany of highly public criticism combined with their revolving door presidency, the Red Cross Board decided to run to the crisis. How bold of them to rip off the proverbial Band-Aid and suffer the shorter-term sting rather than to set their organization up for longer-lasting suffering.
The Red Cross’ board made several good strategic decisions:
They got it over with: Board members understood that by asking for Mark Everson’s resignation, they were cr
While conducting a search on disaster management in India, I came across this government site on the subject. It includes a lot of information for architects and the ordinary citizen on how to survive an earthquake but I wonder whether the department in question has done much to publicize its work. They have colouring books for students on how to face disasters, but are they carrying out drills to show students what to do in the event of an earthquake or a fire? I remember, when I was a hostel resident in the UK two years ago, how fire drills and alarms were a regular part of our life. Fire alarms were always checked on Wednesdays, not just in the hostel but also in the university. People knew where to go in case there was a disaster. Are Delhi residents similarly well-informed? What about

Wide eyed and wet behind the ears, the rookie researcher steps into the lab for the first time. Armed with several years’ knowledge mined from text books, lectures and undergrad labs he feels ready to take his place amongst the worldwide legions of scientists who battle daily in the pursuit of knowledge. Here are four rookie researcher disasters. All are true stories that I have witnessed (and one that I made myself - I’ll let you guess which). Each of you will likely have your own tales to tell, please share them in the comments section below and let this serve as a guide, helping rookie researchers of the future avoid the mistakes of others.

I can smell a breakdown coming...No, this is not some sort of crazy Brit weekend round-up, since for that I would need a lot more space than this page could provide, a whole day to write it and some serious pain management medication to soothe all the aches that come with writing about the Britster. No, this is not a review, either, it's just a list (OK, short list) of things that I predict will happen in the very near future. To Britney, that is. And no, I am not considering changing my career and switching to predicting the future for pop stars, although that would be quite a business venture. But I will take one little bet, namely that at least two out of these three rumors will turn out to be true. So let's see.1. Britney's mum will write a tell-all book in which she will dish a lot of dirt on her crazy daughterThe "Lynne Spears writing a book part" is pretty much confirmed, the problem is with the topic. I was just thinking about all of the events surrounding the fires in San Diego, California. The first thought was that I have a close friend that lives in that area and though she has not lost her home or been seriously injured there was a tense time that I could not reach her that I was very worried.
For those that lost there homes I can relate to how they are feeling right now. Back in 2001 I lost my home, was forced to move my family to another state, and had to start building my life over from ground zero. Like most of the individuals in California I was thankful for my life and the health of my family but it was the lowest point of my life trying to rebuild. Today I don’t think much about the first half of 2001 and the trials I went through but I can use the lessons learned to try and help those that are victims of the disasters that have been happening at an increasing rate in this country.
Items needed to help disaster victims:

You know ever day I open up the site I get my news clips from and see if there is anything I want to write about today and its just down right depressing. Someplace’s are experiencing hurricanes and record flooding while others are drying up under heat waves and fires and burning uncontrollably. Even here in Arkansas sit would not be hard to get a horrible fire started. Everything all around us is drying up and turning brown.
Its important to be prepared for natural disasters when they come. And I don’t just mean putting together a kit for emergencies. Think about how much important information is stored on your computer. If your house were to burn down or be flooded and your computer was destroyed imagine how much information would be lost that you would never be able to get back. www.axcesspoints.com will help you be prepared for these disasters when they happen. If we became sad at every disaster in the world, we'd never leave a state of despondency. If we never cared about others' suffering, however, we'd be something less than people. This isn't just a cliche' either. Animals take care of their young, but do they grieve for those lost to them? For those animals they never met?
Anyways, I felt for the miners, but the accident really touched me when the rescue workers died trying to save them. Although their gambit failed, it was a noble act in every sense of the word and represents the best aspect of our humanity.
The Peru one is pure emotion, I admit. I just think a lot of good people died.
Tragedy is when we rise to our God-given potential and He desires nothing more than for us to do well. How do I know? He tells us several times in the Bible.
We can't all don mining gear and attempt a rescue (but some will-God bless them), but I'm sure we can do something. At least the religious should offer a prayer.
Here's a prayer from

Disasters and trauma are an unfortunate part of life. Every person is affected differently by a trauma, but none the less, disasters ultimately will have some sort of impact on just about everyone. Different factors determine how a disaster or trauma will affect one's mental health. Broaching the subject of "mental health" still carries a stigma for some, but there is nothing to be embarrassed about. Realizing what normal feelings and reactions may result from a trauma is the first step in determining if one needs professional help.
What exactly constitutes a "disaster" or a "trauma"? That truly depends on the person. However, the following is a list of such known occurrences:
–Various accidents
–Physical, emotional or sexual abuse
–Neglect
–War experience
–Alcoholism
–Illness, surgery or disability
–The death of a family member of friend
–A natural disaster
Obviously, this list is in no way conclusive,
This video shows how many people have died from conventional medicine and from unnecessary surgeries, as well as other interesting information. It makes you wonder if just taking pills for all your problems is actually the best thing to do. Do you think it is as bad as this video shows? This video is by Dr. Mercola.
Free SMS:Disasters, Flood, famine and Mobile PhonesFrom The Economist print editionTechnology is transforming humanitarian relief—and shifting the balance of power between donors and recipientsPanos“MY NAME is Mohammed Sokor, writing to you from Dagahaley refugee camp in Dadaab. Dear Sir, there is an alarming issue here. People are given too few kilograms of food. You must help.”A crumpled note, delivered to a passing rock star-turned-philanthropist? No, Mr Sokor is a much sharper communicator than that. He texted this appeal from his own mobile phone to the mobiles of two United Nations officials, in London and Nairobi. He got the numbers by surfing at an internet café at the north Kenyan camp.As Mr Sokor's bemused London recipient points out, two worlds were colliding. The age-old scourge of famine in the Horn of Africa had found a 21st-century response; and a familiar flow of authority, from rich donor to grateful recipient, had been reversed. It was also a sign that technol
We are all flabbergasted with the erection of various buildings and skyscrapers in most parts of the world, even being considered as landmarks in their own right. While the occurrence may only be normal, the point of looking back further towards the original land area may need to be checked out.
Trees are being chopped down one by one. Uprooting and chopping them down takes away the natural cycle of trees trying to contain flood problems which has become one of the worldwide disasters plaguing most of the world today.
While the issue on stopping development and saving the natural resources has become a point to point issue, there is no question that it will all boil down to a point where man must choose between advancement and natural preservation soon.

images copyright: Vivien BlackburnI came across a disastrous watercolour flower abstraction when I was sorting through some paperwork and sketchbooks and stopped to work on it with coloured pencils and try to pull it together. It could now be the basis for a large canvas, playing with fluid paint, glazing and line - or of course a large watercolour/mixed media.I do like mixing media for the bigger range of marks available.Another thing on the 'to do' list - more watercolour/mixed media work. and ..... played with in Photoshop

One year ago, Indonesia's cultural heart, the ancient Javanese city of Yogyakarta, was rocked to its core - quite literally.Shortly before sunrise on May 27, 2006, a magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck the city and Klaten district in nearby Central Java province, killing more than 5,800 people and leaving the region in ruins. "I just ran out of the house after the quake hit and immediately saw so many houses heavily damaged or collapsed," said Imam Purwadi, 53, one of the lucky survivors."This was the most powerful earthquake in my life." The temblor destroyed or severely damaged more than 350,000 homes and displaced 1.5 million people. Those figures would be astonishing except for the fact that the earthquake was anything but an isolated event for the country.Since Boxing Day 2004, Indonesia has experienced no less than eight major disasters that read off like a laundry list of horror: the Asian tsunami of December 26, 2004; a magnitude-8.7 earthquake on Nais Island in March 2005; the Yog

The lady said, “I’ve cut it at an angle like they said at the hospital but it still won’t go through.” It’s cut at the wrong angle - it should be a long cut, almost parallel with the sides…
It’s not working…..?
Has a rubber lining in the sound output. Rubber perishes, expands, jams and gets forced closed. Result, no sound output. Cure? trim a bit off….
Then there was the old lady who produced better part of 100 dead batteries, “I save them I don’t like to waste anything!”
Every one had the sticker carefully replaced. Unfortunately she had her new batteries in there as well…..
A group of journalists in Indonesia have organised simultaneous multi-religious prayers aimed at alleviating the pain from the series of disasters that have hit the country. The event will be held on Sunday at 8 am local time. "We will have a mass prayer involving Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus and Confucians," Asro Kamal Rokan, one of the organisers of the event, told the Jakarta Post.Asro, who is the editor-in-chief of the state-run news agency Antara said that Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to participate in the prayers for Muslims, which will take place at the Istiqlal mosque in the capital Jakarta.
Biofuels have attracted a lot of government intervention. The 2007 UK Budget extended the generous 20p/litre tax differential to 2010. In the States, corn ethanol is heavily subsidised and President Bush recently quadrupled the target for its use in transport fuels.
Demand for biofuels has skyrocketed and so have stories about their damaging consequences. Food commodity prices are soaring, leading to shortages in poor countries. Some types of biofuel emit more carbon dioxide through their lifecycle than fossil fuels. Today the Guardian reported that forests in South-East Asia are being cleared for timber, using the excuse that oil palms will be planted in the clearings. Biofuelwatch reports many more issues.
The problem here is that governments are using the wrong tools. Supporting specific types of technology or initiative means that they will be used indiscriminately. Biofuels can be low-emissions and sustainable, but governments should use market-based policy to support the
